Musical Episodes in Non-Musical TV Shows

Rate: 6 Flag
Music on television is a big trend, from musical series such as Glee and the new Smash, to musical competitions (American Idol, The Voice, The X Factor).  Even shows that have no musical connection whatsoever still sometimes offer an episode or two with musical numbers.  Sometimes, it's so quirky and brilliant that it works. Other times, it's so out of left field, it leaves viewers scratching their heads in confusion.

Here are some that come to mind (linked to samples from YouTube).

7th Heaven

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Chicago Hope

Community

Daria

Fringe

Grey's Anatomy

Sanctuary

Scrubs

The Simpsons

That 70s Show

Xena: Warrior Princess

Can you think of any others?  Let me know.

I remember Miami Vice was much talked about for its creative use of popular rock music at the time. The West Wing often used good music especially in the emotional ending of CJs potential relationship with Secret Service Agent, Donovan "Halleluiah". That was a ruff one.

The other was.....New York Minute, Somebody's going to emergency, somebody's going to jail.....Sorkin always made his music selection very defining to the plot.

Nick, if all I had was The West Wing and Star Trek, TNG, I would be one happy TV dude!
Buffy was and is my all time favorite TV musical. I'll come back and watch the rest. Thanks for the links!
That musical show is like Viagra for Buffy fans. I knew that would be the featured one.

I can't think of any, though.
You missed the Bollywood scene from Season 4 of The Big Bang Theory----priceless!
"The Darlins'" on Andy Griffith?
(You mentioned "Chicago Hope"--Mandy Potemkin singing was scary)
And the musical episode on "Scrubs" has to be one of the most creative 1/2 hour comedy episodes ever made--especially "Guy Love"
Walter, the Xena musical numbers were pretty scary too. :)
Lester Flat, Earl Scruggs , & Roy Clark on The Beverly Hillbillies.
Waylon Jennings on The Dukes of Hazzard.
Correction... Waylon did the theme to Dukes... I was Roy Orbison
who was on to sing Pretty Woman with Daisy Duke at his side.
"House" is one - Hugh Laurie plays electric guitar and piano (he really can play. "Bones" - ZZTop's Billy Gibbons has a recurring role as the father of one of the characters.
On an episode of Star Trek...Lenord Nimoy played a fake space ukelele and sang... Take care young ladies and value your wine......bitter dregs. It stuck in my head. Spock was evidently way out of character !
