Reimagining Space: 1999

Rate: 2 Flag

The year 1999 came and went without our moon being knocked out of its orbit, propelling the Moonbase Alpha crew toward exciting adventures in deep space.  The television show Space: 1999 wasn't the only science fiction that lied as I mentioned in a past essay. Now the time has arrived for a remake of the series -- or a reboot or a reimagining. I'm not really sure what to expect. All I know is that it will have a new title, Space: 2099, it will eventually air on the United Kingdom's ITV, and the preliminary artwork (above) shows the familiar but upgraded Eagle spacecraft from the original show.

The Gerry Anderson sci-fi adventure from the 1970s was campy goodness, so it makes sense to dust it off and retell its story for today's audiences. They did it with Star Trek, they did it with Battlestar Galactica, why not Space: 1999? The original starred Martin Landau as Commander Koenig. Who knows if the new series will feature the same characters, a new generation, or start completely from scratch?

Hopefully, this relaunch will be as successful as the U.K.'s revival of Doctor Who. We shall see.

Loved the show when I was a young teenager (preferred the first season). I also enjoyed its predecessor UFO. I read the biographical book written by Anderson’s ex-wife (I don’t recall her name) last year. In it, she said that Space 1999 was originally supposed to be the second season of UFO, but the concept eventually morphed into the new series Space 1999. This Wikipedia article discuss it more.
Should be "discusses" above.
I liked the first season of Space 1999 better than the second, although that was fun too. Definitely had a 70s vibe to it.
I vaguely remember this show. However, I do remember it was very talky. I hope the remake has more action. R
Trudge, they didn't have much of a budget, so talk substituted for action and special effects. :)
I remember fondly of Space 1999 the first season. It was a little more darker than the second season which in my humble opinion got too comical. Concerning the science fiction that lied about the dates, you'll find plenty of science fiction stories and novels that lied about the dates. They never attempted to prophecy anyway. That's why science fiction is also called "speculative fiction." They speculate on what possible and probable. Plus, I'll have you know that Aldous Huxley got away with using "After Ford" in his date from his novel, Brave New World.
