Obama to Advance Funding to Veterans’ Medical Programs

October 22, 2009 12:43 PM

Political coverage and musings on pop culture from ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Jake Tapper and the ABC News White House team.

ABC News' Jordyn Phelps reports:

President Obama is honoring a campaign promise today by signing the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act into law.

The legislation will guarantee “a timely and predictable flow of funding for the Department of Veteran Affairs medical care,” according to White House spokesman Nick Shapiro.

Funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs has been late in getting approved by Congress in 20 of the last 23 years, which has affected the planning of veterans’ health care programs. The legislation would advance funding for these medical programs by one year ahead of the fiscal year. The advance funding will ensure that the VA can depend on receiving funding for these programs on time and that they will not be affected by politicking on Capitol Hill.

In a letter to the president of the American Federation of Government Employees in October 2008, then-Senator Obama promised that, if elected, his administration would support the legislation.

The legislation has been strongly supported by Democrats and Republicans in Congress alike.

In remarks early this month, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., described the 409 votes supporting the legislation in the House as a very, very strong bipartisan show of support.” Stephen Buyer, R-Ind., was the only representative to vote no to the legislation in the House.

The president will deliver brief remarks in the East Room of the White House this afternoon when he signs the legislation into law.  He will be joined by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, members of Congress, and leaders from various veterans service organizations.

As a Veteran, and a Citizen, I support this 100%. Thank you for posting this, KOB. As always,Rated.
Kudos to you for serving Andy. I salute you my friend. Hey, this President makes good on actual promises AND has a heart...
I call that Patriotic.
Thanks KOB! I didn't vote for him (because I knew he would win, so that if he screwed up I could feel good about myself.) but I totally support the guy. People rip on him for no good reason and fail to understand that his wife is the greatest first lady ever! Like I've been saying for weeks, give the dude a chance!
Thank god we're finally going to take care of our brave vets. It's wonderful to have good news. Thanks, Blue1
I'm in the middle of my Veterans care right now. But it's the returning soldiers who I am concerned about. This will go a long way toward preventing the stupidity of a few years ago, when not only did the VA not have a budget for the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, they didn't have a PLAN!

The VA did not have a plan because Bush/Cheney/Rove didn't give them the money needed to make a plan.

Where are those creeps, anyway? Why don't we disrupt their town hall meetings?
Darn that commie liberal socialist Obama for helping people out again!
