Amazing, Still.

As many times as I've watched it happen over the last fifty years, I'm still amazed every year that this,

Black Futsu Flower Bud 

and this,

Rouge Vif d'Etampes Pumpkin Flower Bud 

can turn into this.

Developing Futsu and Rouge Vif d'Etampes Squashes 

Even if the big one turns out to be a tasteless doorway ornament, it will still be worth it.

I got one of those plants in my backyard. Planted it directly into my compost bin. It has been busy all summer turning stinky kitchen discards into leaves, flowers and now ever-growing pumpkins. Yes, amazing, still.

There's a new book out, "The Compleat Squash," by Amy Goldman; it's also amazing. So many different shapes, flavors, sizes and colors. I've already reconciled myself to the fact that if I want to have any other vegetables in the lower garden, I'll have to open up at least 100 square meters more next year because I have at least four "must-grows" on my list! ;)
