day-trippin' over Independance Pass (CO) part I

Rate: 20 Flag

Sara and I decided we needed to go over Independance Pass once more before she left Colorado. So, on Saturday October 16, we set out to do just that...

colorado-highway-map Colorado - see that circle? that is the area where Independance Pass is. It is usually closed by this time of year. Because of snow.

020 Kenosha Pass, Colorado - we wanted to follow the old railroad tracks into the woods, until we heard a "BOOM!".....

022 ...and even though neither of us look like moose, we weren't wearing orange and didn't want to risk an inexperienced hunter's excited shooting....

yay! I love that part of the Western Slopes. Great captures. I know when it's Elk Season down in the San Juans, all the locals dress their big dogs in orange vests. The hunters will shoot at anything in some areas. There are a thousand stories hidden in those Leadville pics. I always love your stuff.
Hey I've been there! Great photos.
Love it! Awesome adventure, can't wait for part two!
Mixed feelings about this area - In the summer and fall of '69, I hitched rides several times through this area, as I had moved to Aspen on a whim. Lots of good rides; some not so safe. Glad I escaped unscathed, as some of the denizens of Leadville were pretty rough characters. Independence Pass is certainly an impressive drive, though.
More please. I've been to leadville, without a camera. These are terrific!!!
great stuff, km, and a fascinating part of the country. i've been in south park and leadville, probably on those same roads. beautiful pictures.
Your photographs are magnificent.~r
Beautiful and so familiar. I expected a photo of the cow rock!
Thanks for that wonderful trip!
My husband used to live in Leadville as a kid; at recess they built igloo's. No joke. We got our first snow today on the Western Slope; brief but beautiful. Went to Ridgeway and Ouray on Thursday and that was spectacular! Thanks for the photos!
Oh god this makes me miss the Rockies.

My wife and I lived in Durango for several years, passing over Red Mountain pass to Telluride many times (Wolf Creek Pass twice). My wife hated those drives, winter or summer.

Beautiful pics KM - I'd never been to Molly Brown's Leadville before. Cool old buildings.

It seems a lot of people are posting about CO the past week -

I used to live in Leadville and I remember many family trips over Independance Pass. It was a great place to grow up. Would not want to live there now though. Brutal winters. I recall a huge chunk of ice crashed though my sister and I's bedroom.
Just beautiful. I absolutely loved the close-up railroad tracks.
Really enjoyed it. Thanks.
Nice to see my home state on the OS cover. Well done
Awesome shots!
My grandfather had a ranch in North Park (Walden) area for many years. Colorado will always be a huge chunk of my heart!
wow! thanks so much for the great responses! this was a fun day trip with a friend who grew up in Frasier, Colorado, and wanted to hit a few of the places in the mountains that she loves before she moves back to San Diego at the end of the year (this is one of my travelling companions on the Colfax safari from back in July).

I am so glad you all liked the photos - there is one more installment coming with the actual trip up over Independance Pass. Hopefully you will enjoy that one just as much. :)

thank you all!
Great work KM! Makes me want to hop on my motorcycle and ride that area once last time before winter!!
