Black Dog Syndrome

Rate: 2 Flag

I just got back from a volunteer visit to Friends of the Friendless, a no-kill Animal shelter in Higginsville, Missouri. I walked a few of the dogs, hung out with the cats and got to enjoy the gorgeous Missouri countryside. Being out on that big farm made me feel like Dorothy Gale, especially when I was walking a little brown terrier named Vena. It wasn't anything compared to a little black and white dog I fell in love with, named Benning.

Benning and I ran all over the farm! We ran up and down the street, and he rolled in the grass and let me scratch his belly for a solid 15 minutes. The woman running the shelter said he was four months old, and she had found him on the side of the highway eating road kill(gross!). He was such a sweet little thing, it killed me to say goodbye. Poor baby even started howling and whining when I got into the car to leave.

Did anybody know that black dogs are the last to be adopted, if ever adopted, in a shelter? I found out from the woman running the shelter that most shelters will put a black dog right to sleep the second they get them because nobody wants them. Isn't that disgusting?! I promise it's a real thing--look it up on Google! They even have a name for it: "Black Dog Syndrome." Thankfully, there are shelters to help. There are certain shelters around the country that adopt black dogs exclusively, which is kind of messed up...but it's messed up that it's even needed. It's like how horror movies always have the Black dude die first. And I can't understand for the life of me why anybody wouldn't want to adopt a black dog! When I was growing up, I had a big-assed, fat-daddy black Labrador named Boo, and he was the sweetest, most docile and loving dog I have ever known. Sure, Kujo was a black dog, but the movies have always prayed on the stereotypes of minorities. Wake up, sheeple!

Seriously. Do you see this face? That's Benning. SEE HIM?! HOW CAN YOU SAY NO TO THAT YOU FREAKS?!?!?!?!!

So right. If you're looking to adopt a dog, adopt a black one. They'll love you forever.

Way to get out the word! I'm the proud owner of a black mutt named Bud - adopted from the Central NE Humane Society.
I had no idea that such a thing existed. I also write a dog blog and will have to dig into this. I've had black dogs that were sweethearts. How very sad that they aren't adopted.

Also, black cats aren't available for adoption around Halloween because they have been use for ritual cruelty. That's as bad a testament to the inhumanity of our fellow humans.
wow, that's horrible to know. i've got a black dog now and grew up with one. and several black cats over the years. how ignorant can people be? you obviously adore animals. if you also enjoy bikers/bad guys/ tattoos then go to my post. i think it might cheer you up. a black dog gets adopted. love love love and gratitude
