I'm an unemployed marketer, finding more laughs than job opportunities. I bundled up those laughs and observations into a book and titled it "My Humor's Working (Even if I'm Not)." The book is now available. Please share both the link and the humor: https://www.createspace.com/3464979

Ah...ah...choo! A lesson in tolerance

Rate: 6 Flag

I heard a sneeze and turned my head in response.  The sneezer and I made eye contact.  I smiled, dumbly.  Before I found my voice, I listened to the   multiple thoughts in my head...

"If the sneezer is a Johavah's Witness, like my cousin I might  get a lecture about the pagen beliefs that started the "God Bless You" habits."

"If the person is a Native American, like my husband, I might get a silent stare as a reminder that his people were victimized by the European God that is being called out."

Here we are in the midst of Jewish High Holy Days, just as Muslim Ramadan has ended and the American pain of 9-11 is being remembered.   Just when we should be most knowledgeable about the vast religious beliefs around us,  and more tolerant about them, we are becoming a country of cowboy bigots.

A cowboy bigot would hear the sneeze and damn it all, yell out a hearty "God Bless You" in defiance of the sneezer's beliefs.  I couldn't do that.

Another person might simply ignore the sneeze, not wanting to get involved in the other person's expectation of a comment.  I couldn't do that.

I can't ignore the automatic response that wells up in me when I hear a sneeze. I can't impose my comment on someone who might be against the whole thing.

I continue to smile and say "May I say 'God Bless You?' " The sneezer nods and we part our ways in the second or two of our entire interaction.  Welcome to the tolerant America that I would like to see.  Just a little acknowledgement that we don't all see the world through the same prism,  yet we can all interact peacefully and with respect.

I like Gesundheit. Covers a multitude of sins.
Funny what flips through your brain in a second, huh? The only thing that goes through MY head after someone sneezes is "ugh, did they sneeze into their HAND?" "please wash your hands before you touch anything I have to touch" "yuck, I need something to wipe off the doorknob, table, tray, exercise equipment...etc".
here's to peace and kindness and respect.
I've never heard anyone object when I say "God Bless You." They are silent, or they thank me. And I am offended when I sneeze and there is silence. Hmmmm....never thought about it in religious terms, just in politeness terms.
I quote Seinfeld..
"you're so good looking"
Rated with hugs
I like Gesundheit or its Russian equivalent, "Budtye zdorova" or "be healthy."
bpb's response reminded me of a Spanish response I heard long ago, especially if you have consecutive sneezes:

first sneeze--¡Salud!
second sneeze--¡Dinero!
third sneeze--¡Amor!

(health, money and love)

to be followed by the sneezer "Gracias" after each one if able

if there's a fourth sneeze, I've heard "And may you live long enough to enjoy them."
Thanks all, these are wonderful solutions. Actually, in anticipation of silence when I sneeze, I blurt out my own "God Bless Me."
At work, someone sneezed and three people said, "God bless you!" in unison. The sneezer then said that she had been on the bus and heard a woman explaining to her kid that they said GBY because when you sneeze, your soul can leave your body through your nose and GBY stops that from happening. Sneezer's kid heard this and wondered what happens if you are all alone when you sneeze--and no one says GBY??
