Bio
I'm an unemployed marketer, finding more laughs than job opportunities. I bundled up those laughs and observations into a book and titled it "My Humor's Working (Even if I'm Not)." The book is now available. Please share both the link and the humor: https://www.createspace.com/3464979

Books need reviewers

Rate: 5 Flag

When I tell stories I get big belly laughs.  I thought it would translate to the printed page so I wrote a book while I was unemployed and called it "My Humor's Working (Even if I'm Not)." Now I need to get it reviewed so it will exist in the eyes of library and bookshop buyers.

Since I am unemployed, I am taking night classes to pick myself up from my bootstraps.  I brought the book to class and fellow students refused to pass the two copies to others.  Instead, they they laughed out loud, read out sections and gulped out things like "I love this one 'Your dog had a better childhood than your grandmother' ha ha ha, that's from thechapter  called "Clues tht you have a spoiled dog."  Clearly, the humor works.

Now I'm trying to get it into book stores and libraries.  I found that getting the book to their distributor isn't good enough.  They won't touch it unless there is a review of it in Publisher's Weekly, Booklist, and the Library Journal.  The new entry on Amazon is also looking unloved with nary a review.

I did make an announcement on a LinkedIn group for writers and received this response:

"I went to Amazon and read the first chapter….about workplace feet…I was in my office laughing hysterically so loud…that I called in a co-worker and HE read it with me and started laughing too.
Then we started having the discussion about our feet…My feet, stay neatly, painted AND secure in closed toe shoes…I just don’t like showing my feet…even at home, my feet stay comfortable in SOCKS, SHOES, OR SLIPPERS….no one..not even my EX see my feet..unless they catch me, hold me down and rip the socks from them…LOL…
Great Read and my friend is ordering a copy as soon as he gets back to his desk..he’s also ordering one for me…

I asked if the reader would post that to the Amazon page at:

Any suggestions on how to get the book in front of the influencers and buyers?

Wow, I am amazed by what you have done.
I think word of mouth is the way to go.. I think it is the ONLY way to go these days.

I'll be thinking about this questions, Kris. Seems like there ought to be a way to parley the word of mouth into some real publicity!
Hi Linda and Owl, thanks for the visit. I can do the groundwork to get it in the hands of area businesses, but the bigger stage uses these gatekeepers. Perhaps some OS pals will have advice for breaking that barrier.
jane: Yep, I've already done the press release, although I'd be lucky to get the attention of the Chicago Tribune, so I've also sent it to the little local neighborhood paper. I hadn't thought of the church connection though - great idea. I need to tap into the national arena with these well-placed reviews though, ah and that's the rub.
Congratulations once again, Kris! I have had success with the independent booksellers. They are more likely to carry first time authors of smaller presses....book readings and signings are helpful...and once again, independent bookstores would quite probably love to have you! xox
Robin: You are too kind. Thanks so much for the encouragement.
Jane the smithy: You're having fun with this. I can tell. In fact, you're on the same wave length with me since I do have plenty of unemployed marketing friends. The question remains, how to get reviews in the key areas.
Auntie Mable: I'm reaching out to individual book stores and libraries (and asking others to order the book through them). The question is how to get reviews to the key organizations so the libraries and book stores will even order the books through their distributors. I'm hearing that unless the books are reviewed in that manner, it's all hunt and peck.
I am thrilled for you! Let me put on my thinking cap on this one.
Goodreads can be a pretty good grassroots marketing tool. Have you sent review copies (or links) to well-known bloggers who blog in relevant subject areas? Once you generate more Web buzz it might be easier to get a mainstream reviewer to look at your work...
