Maybe NSFW... it all depends on where you work.
From Nico Pitney at The Huffington Post, quoting Shep Smith:
"We are America, we don't torture! And the moment that is not the case, I want off the train! This government is of, by, and for the people -- that means it's mine. That means -- I'm not saying what is torture, and what is not torture, but I'm saying, whatever it is, you don't do it for me! I want off the train when the government starts -- I want off, next stop, now!"[emphasis added][...]
"They better not do it," he said. "If we are going to be Ronald Reagan's Shining City on the Hill, we don't get to torture. We don't do it." [...]

There is something about Shep that is very much unlike many of his colleagues. In Glenn Greenwald's blog, Mona, a long-time regular commenter, called it a kind of nobility. To be derided by Hannity and O'Reilly, bobbot, will be a mark of honor.
I do feel some sympathy for Shep, though. If he thinks we don't do it, and now has to learn, very painfully, that we do, it will truly be a rude awakening for him. I wouldn't wish that kind of reality check on anyone. ('ceptin' maybe Cheney/Bush, Rumsfeld/Rice, and that list of attorneys who crafted the memos...)
I'm pretty optimistic right now that this whole scandal is really beginning to unfold, unravel, and finally turn into a snowball that will run amok down the advanced slope... before it explodes against the lodge and jolts the apres skiers over their Irish coffees.
Anyway, I liked that "rude epiphany" thing so much that I decided to change the name of my blog to reflect it.
No. It. Never. Works. ...and even if it did, that wouldn't make it right or proper.
People like May, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Addington and Yoo certainly shock my conscience. They don't understand that torture has greatly increased the chances someone will feel justified in another 9-11. And if they thought none of this would ever see the light of day, they were idiots. It always comes out because there are always people of conscience involved who make sure that it does.
Sorry if you don't like it, fascists, but that's how we roll.
I like Shep. It baffles me that Fox has him.
Tom, Sandra & WalkAway... I don't really have much of an opinion about Shep. No cable, so I mostly keep up on these personalities via the web, but I did appreciate his vehemence on the topic. Still, I feel a bit sorry for him. Clearly, he's been living in a state of denial... not unlike many of us, but he's actually in the news biz, and has access to more information than the rest of us (unless Fox censors what their talent can read). I am grateful, though, that he caused a bit of a ruckus.
BBE and Ash... perhaps, Shep really will have an epiphany and can become someone who sees the reality and reports on that. He seems to want to be that way, but only time will tell.
