for Shep Smith, a very rude epiphany awaits

Rate: 8 Flag

Maybe NSFW... it all depends on where you work.

From Nico Pitney at The Huffington Post, quoting Shep Smith:

"We are America, we don't torture! And the moment that is not the case, I want off the train! This government is of, by, and for the people -- that means it's mine. That means -- I'm not saying what is torture, and what is not torture, but I'm saying, whatever it is, you don't do it for me! I want off the train when the government starts -- I want off, next stop, now!"[emphasis added]

[...]

"They better not do it," he said. "If we are going to be Ronald Reagan's Shining City on the Hill, we don't get to torture. We don't do it."  [...]

I like Shep...and I think the defenders of torture are idiots.
I wonder how long it will be before Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly publicly denounce him as a traitor and a terrorist?
Anyone who has ever defended torture needs to talk to the millions of political prisoners who were tortured, and they'll learn that their governments tortured not to gain information, but to simply humiliate and terrorize. They'll also learn that those political prisoners were often innocent of the so-called crimes they were accused of, yet never tried for.
Thanks, Guys! I appreciate your taking the time to read and comment.

There is something about Shep that is very much unlike many of his colleagues. In Glenn Greenwald's blog, Mona, a long-time regular commenter, called it a kind of nobility. To be derided by Hannity and O'Reilly, bobbot, will be a mark of honor.

I do feel some sympathy for Shep, though. If he thinks we don't do it, and now has to learn, very painfully, that we do, it will truly be a rude awakening for him. I wouldn't wish that kind of reality check on anyone. ('ceptin' maybe Cheney/Bush, Rumsfeld/Rice, and that list of attorneys who crafted the memos...)

I'm pretty optimistic right now that this whole scandal is really beginning to unfold, unravel, and finally turn into a snowball that will run amok down the advanced slope... before it explodes against the lodge and jolts the apres skiers over their Irish coffees.

Anyway, I liked that "rude epiphany" thing so much that I decided to change the name of my blog to reflect it.
Thanks, Stellaa... I cropped my photo from our Philly get-together last week for the anniversary of O_S's launch. It's a teeny bit blurred, but no more than I usually am in photos... ;~)

No. It. Never. Works. ...and even if it did, that wouldn't make it right or proper.
I'm not surprised, Shep is one of the few reasonable people on Fox. And Cliff May is such a fool, he doesn't even realize that he's saying torture is okay because we decide to call it something else. By the way, has anyone found any of those 266 ticking time bombs? They must be in the same place as the other WMD.

People like May, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Addington and Yoo certainly shock my conscience. They don't understand that torture has greatly increased the chances someone will feel justified in another 9-11. And if they thought none of this would ever see the light of day, they were idiots. It always comes out because there are always people of conscience involved who make sure that it does.

Sorry if you don't like it, fascists, but that's how we roll.
Willful ignorance is what comes to mind when I see people denying we tortured and are torturing still. monkey fingered.
If we defend torture, then why not defend the raping of the enemy women, and the killing of the enemy children so they don't grow up and seek revenge on the torture we inflicted on their fathers?

I like Shep. It baffles me that Fox has him.
What BBE said. I have great contempt for those who refuse to see the truth. I wish I could like Shep.
A little blurred means, I think, a strong aura, but I like your pic too. In terms of torture, I'm glad Shep is angry about it, but he needs a reality check and, if he's sincere, a couple of pills for migraines (and his cell phone off).
Thank you for that, Lairderg! I will now feel differently about all of my blurred photos...

Tom, Sandra & WalkAway... I don't really have much of an opinion about Shep. No cable, so I mostly keep up on these personalities via the web, but I did appreciate his vehemence on the topic. Still, I feel a bit sorry for him. Clearly, he's been living in a state of denial... not unlike many of us, but he's actually in the news biz, and has access to more information than the rest of us (unless Fox censors what their talent can read). I am grateful, though, that he caused a bit of a ruckus.

BBE and Ash... perhaps, Shep really will have an epiphany and can become someone who sees the reality and reports on that. He seems to want to be that way, but only time will tell.
