The day we notice
the vast complexities
of a spiderweb

the marriage
of scilla
and star magnolia

the hairy woodpecker
almost, not quite
hiding

the moist mouth of
the morning
glory

the lamp collecting
the sun's light
to release it at night

the drape
of clematis
the dangling jewelled fuchsia

Chinese lanterns
hollowed with their own
heat

Japanese maples
arching above us
like prayers held aloft

is the day
we make the time
to observe a lengthening shadow

and return
to the fountainhead
and to the compass rose
is the day we return
to our house
hold.
