Bio: Yes, that's me, ringing up a little mojo for my Fightin' Phils during the 2008 World Series. I grew up, in 1950s and 60s suburbia, with the heart of a frontierswoman. I was a journalist before big advertising bullies started owning the media and quit (after a long, loud battle) when I saw what they were doing. I was the oldest, and the most eccentric, of seven children in an Irish American family. I married, divorced, and now have a significant other. I am a "budding" herbalist, a mother of four avians (My poor Keenan died recently.), a guerilla gardener, an adjunct professor of pre-composition college writing, a poet, a fiction writer, a creative non-fiction writer, a feature writer, and now a player and a blogger of women's baseball.

'Stray bullet' wounds player during Hong Kong matchup with Netherlands

An unidentified player for Team Hong Kong in the Women's World Cup of Baseball was injured after being shot in the leg with a stray bullet during her team's game against Team Netherlands in Jose A. Casanova Stadium, Caracas, Friday, Aug. 13. According to Venezuelan officials, the women was treated immediately at a local military hospital and her injuries were minor. No other players were injured.

As a result, all competitions from that 2 p.m. game forward have been suspended and all players, coaches, and guests are staying in their respective hotels while Venezuela's Scientific Department "is worked on compiling a detailed report regarding the incident," according to a statement released by the International Baseball Federation. The IBAF also stated that it is "carefully analyzing the situation with the different delegations. Any decision will be taken keeping the security of every person involved in the World Cup as the main priority."

Paul Seiler, USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO also released a statement:

We are aware of the events which unfolded Friday in Caracas, and since then we have been working closely with our security agents who are traveling as part of our Women's National Team delegation in Venezuela, with the International Baseball Federation and with the event organizers to gather more information as we determine the appropriate next steps for our delegation. The safety of our athletes has been and always will be our top priority.

Team USA was slated to play 2:30 p.m. today against Team South Korea.

I really hope they solve this matter quickly and return to competition. The women on all of these teams have worked very hard, despite in many cases formidable obstacles to make it to this fourth World Cup. It would be a shame for the women themselves, and a black eye to the IBAF's and the Venezuelans' efforts to show the world it can host a quality sporting event, if the fourth World Cup of Women's Baseball is cancelled.

This is disheartening, to say the least. I hope and pray everyone is safe, and then everyone can continue playing. I also hope no politics are involved, or will get involved, with this. These hardworking women deserve better!
