Marston holds Canadians to one run, goes 5-for-5 in second-round contest
Team USA moved into the second round of the Fourth Women's World Cup of Baseball with a 10-1 win over Canada at Jose Perez Stadium in Maracay, Venezuela. The win give the US a 4-1 record in tournament play; Canada's record is 3-2.
Leftfielder Tamara Holmes of Oakland, who hit back-to-back homeruns Sunday, only had one hit in three at-bats Wednesday, but that hit was huge. She hit her second grand slam of the tournament in the top of the sixth inning off Canadian reliever Shayla Sashavar.
Jenna Marston of St. Louis threw 77 pitches in four innings, allowing three hits, the lone run, and two walks. She struck out two and improved to 2-0. Marston, who moved to right field in the fifth, also batted five-for-five, with two doubles. Relievers Ghazalah Sailors of Santa Barbara, CA, Wynn McCann of Gilbertsville, PA, and Clarisa Navarro of LaToya, Texas, each pitched an inning to finish the game.
Canada's Cindy Saavadra took the loss after not posting an out in the first inning, hitting a batter and allowing two hits and two runs. Melissa Armstrong relieved Saavadra, pitching four innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. Jessica Berube pitched the fifth. After Holmes' grand slam, Martine Nadeau finished the game, pitching two innings.
USA's next contest will be against the undefeated host team Venezuela 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

I hope to recap the remaining games as well as Monday's US-Puerto Rico game as soon as I recover from "last week of the writing professor's semester-itis."
