Bio
Yes, that's me, ringing up a little mojo for my Fightin' Phils during the 2008 World Series. I grew up, in 1950s and 60s suburbia, with the heart of a frontierswoman. I grew up a Catholic with the heart of a seeker of the Divine Feminine. I grew up a girl and a woman, when being either "just wasn't good enough," with the heart of a warrior priestess of a warrior goddess. My favorite television shows are (from the mid 90s) Profiler, (from the early 21st Century) Witchblade, and (now) Saving Grace, so you know where my mind still is. I was a journalist before big advertising bullies started owning the media and quit (after a long, loud battle) when I saw what they were doing. I was the oldest, and the most eccentric, of seven children in an Irish American family. I married, divorced, and now have a significant other. I am a "budding" herbalist, a mother of four avians (My poor Keenan died recently.), a guerilla gardener, an adjunct professor of pre-composition college writing, a poet, a fiction writer, a creative non-fiction writer, a feature writer, and now a player and a blogger of women's baseball.

Phoenix Cup 2011

International Earth Stars split two while Hong Kong Allies and Taipei Vanguard dominate on opening day

The International Earth Stars, which include players from the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, split its first two games in the initial round of women's baseball tournament competition in the Asia Insurance Phoenix Cup 2011, held in Hong Kong.

The International Earth Stars defeated Korea's Nine Vics team, 8-4, but lost to the Allies of Hong Kong, 11-5, after the Allies mounted an eight-run charge during the top of the sixth inning.

IES team members include Zoe Galland, Stephanie Kung, Amy Schneider, and Shawna Marcurio of the United States; Canada native Sam Ostrom; and Jose VanVeen, Claudia Kranendonk, Linde Gerritsen, Tessa Heeres, and Michelle Bruijn of the Netherlands. Coaches are Philipe Yan, head coach; Rocky Ostrom, team manager, and Kevin VanVeen, pitching and first base coach. The umpire representing the United States is Perry Barber (Open Salon's own umpirepb).

Shawna Marcurio posted this on her Facebook page about the experience: "We split our double header today. We beat the Korea Nine Vics 8-4 in our first game, and we lost our second game 11-5 to Hong Kong. We were ahead in the whole game and then had one bad inning and couldn't bounce back after that. Oh, well... we have the day off tomorrow to relax and recover, and then we play again on Sunday. It was completely fun, and we had awesome weather.... sunny and warm, not a cloud in the sky."

According to the description on the Phoenix Cup website, the International Earth Stars took its name to reflect "the team's mission of creating international peace, harmony, and camaraderie through the great game of baseball." (http://phoenix2011.tripleplaycom.net/team/team/1)

In other action, the Hong Kong Allies started their winning ways by defeating the Korean Nine Vics team, 13-7. Another team that is already two up in first round play is Taiwan's Taipei Vanguard. The Vanguard scored 10 in the top of the fourth inning to crush the iTeam of Hong Kong, 16-3. The Taipei women also defeated Korea's DDD Ball team, 13-3, blasting the game open with seven runs in the second inning. In addition, Japan's powerhouse Far East Bloomers began the tournament with a win against the iTeam, 12-1.

I love learning new things and I love this post. You never read of women playing and I think it's a shame. I read you bio. You're a fascinating woman and it's a pleasure to meet you!
Yeah, it is a shame. It's like there's a blanket of silence over the fact that women have been playing BASEBALL since the game began, and we are still playing recreationally, competitively on the national and international level, and even professionally -- along with the All American Girls, a few intrepid women have played with men in the minor leagues.
Women have been playing, coaching, and umpiring baseball since the eighteen hundreds! Amanda Clement was a widely respected umpire and accomplished athlete in her own right out in the midwest at the turn of the nineteenth century, and young women students were playing baseball (and being coached by other women) at colleges in the northeast as early as 1870. Thank you for illuminating part of baseball's forgotten history as well as honoring its future, lairderg.
Thanks, umpirepb! Wish I could do more right now. I hope I can get my book done soon and get even more information out.
