The Perfect Place -- Aussie Home #2

Rate: 18 Flag

Even the best experiences can be enriched by the magic of synchronicity. As Heraclitus stated:

"The unseen design of things is more harmonious than the seen."

I learned the truth of these words and experienced the beauty of synchronicity through my years in our second Australian home -- the home of my dreams: (below)

*********************************************************************

I was not fond of our first Australian home -- the rooms managed to be grey, dreary and depressing  in a land of bright sunny days. We lost this place when gale forces winds brought down a crumbling brick chimney straight through water  pipes in the ceiling, resulting in a messy, stinking, flooded, "bloody" mess. I have to admit that it was a bittersweet experience to begin searching for another home.

It took seven days of reading index cards in the windows of Cronulla, NSW real estate offices to come across a space perfectly suited to us.  In every possible way, the "unseen design of things" could indeed be credited for the existence of this particular home down to the last detail.

After living here for several months, I developed a fanciful idea about the perfect ecto-plasmal connection between the homeowner and myself. A synchronous intertwining of like minds, melding my nocturnal subconscious into her daily planning for the home designed and built to suit our combined dreams for the perfect home.

Although the structure was magnificent, the location can only be described as magical.  The tiered stoned planters, the precariously perched heated pool, and the stone terrace all over looked a view down down the river, past the estuary, straight out to the Pacific Ocean.

This magnificent view, complete with frolicking dolphins could be enjoyed from the octagonal bay window while sitting at the
octagonal oak table brought from America and
salvaged from the flood waters of the first home.

Or, from the balcony of the master bedroom, or through the French Doors of the dining room and living room. These rooms were brightened each morning  by a series of  enchanting sunrises.

The kitchen was laid out to facilitate cooking classes as well as entertaining. No expense was spared for top of the line Miele appliances manufactured in New Zealand,
the native land of the talented woman of the house.

Just off the kitchen was the inviting dining room complete with antique piano, previously showcased for Stellaa's table open call.

Looking north, from the porthole in the master bath, we could see  downtown Cronulla and its marina. On New Year's Eve, 2000, we spotted the fireworks going off over the bridge in downtown Sydney.

Swimming in this lovely heated pool was not for the faint of heart. That tiny boxwood hedge was all that separated the pool and swimmer from a 50 meter fall down the steep stone cliff.  Although tempting to look down to see  the fairy penguins, there was a safer vantage point.

Fondly known as "The Rock", just behind the eucalyptus tree are a small set of Aboriginal rock carvings. This was a sacred site for the Aborigine. They could fish for meals as well as watch the weather coming
in over the ever-changing ocean.
The homeowner did not know the exact meaning of the glyph, but its existence was pretty fantastic all on its own!

The tiered garden was my favorite place. Levels of giant rosemary and lavendar bushes, evolvulos, convolvulos, penstemone. nasturtium,  daisies, salvia -- in a bed not shown lettuce, onions, other herbs -- plus thyme all the way down the stone steps. I added assylum to the cracks in the steps which was fun, as well as some roses at the front of the home.

A gardener's paradise.  The home of my dreams.

I am grateful forever for the opportunity to have lived here. I thank the woman who staked her claim to this piece of Australian heaven. She had to fight the city council to build on a recorded Aboriginal memorial. Since this parcel is located just off the tip of a peninsula, down the lane from existing private homes, and inaccessible by water, the council agreed to issue a building permit on condition that the rock carving be preserved.

The glyphs are a well-loved  treasure on this property!

Truly a place I never wanted to leave in person and will always hold with fondest memories in my heart.

Thank you for reading my story!

Oh my god. How on earth did you ever leave?
Lisa, after reading the story of the first house and the storm that damaged it, I enjoyed seeing the second house which you mentioned at the time was so superior to the first. Looking at the house, the view and the amenities I can certainly see why!
Liz: They just about had to drag me out screaming and kicking. The owners decided to come back for the Olympics, so we had to leave. We moved into another grand place, but nothing will ever match up to this one.
Designanator: Thank you for remembering my stories. Maybe it is the designer in us, but I think we like to see other people's homes!
Incredible. What a place! I can imagine why you hold on to those memories.
This is breathtaking. Thank you for taking us someplace really amazing
I love all the stone that was used around the house and in the garden. Really gorgeous. Thanks for sharing this Lisa. What a wonderful memory to have!
Wow, what a place, Lisa. And well-deserved after what you'd experienced at the other house. Aboriginal history and dolphins passing by - a strong bit of magic indeed. It's good to know places like this exist, and I hope you get to live in a place you love just as much some day - thanks for sharing!
Thanks, everyone. It was a once in a lifetime experience. I loved Australia and could have stayed there forever, but it was more like a fantasy than a reality. As much as I wrail against corporate waste, a little of that allowed me to have a fantastic experience. (Also, very little compared to today's standards so I am being a little harsh on our expenditure).

The rent for this home was $5,600 AU. We paid $2,400 US for our share, the company about $1,600. Could I have found something cheaper? Maybe, but after seeing this home, I just had to have it!
What a gorgeous place to live. Thanks for sharing the stunning photographs, too.
What a gift and an experience...yes, hard to leave but a cherished memory that will last your lifetime. yes, the pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
That is an incredible house...must have been hard to leave it.
Thanks, everyone. It was tough to leave. I sent the link to my husband who said I forgot to say that he ALSO fished from the rock. He caught starfish, stingrays, rockfish, pufferfish -- you could not IMAGINE what he pulled out of the estuary. I only have a picture of one of the fish -- it looks normal by comparison.

If you have ever seen the rays in the aquarium at Atlantis in the Bahamas, you will know what my husband pulled up the 50 meter cliff face...it took him an hour to fight the ray to exhaution!
That is so beautiful. And anyone who quotes Heraclitus earns extra points ;0).
Thanks, Dorinda! I am going to find your latest post -- saw it earlier and thought it a must read!
What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing!

I saw dolphins today frolicking in the gulf. Something about that just lightens the heart.
I always considered catching the dolphins playing was a sign of good luck -- make a wish -- it might come true!
Gee Lisa, you just made me feel real crappy about my current abode. Thanks a lot :-(

But really, what a beautiful house, in a beautiful spot. It must have been hard to leave.
That place is incredible. I can see why you would not want to leave. I want to live there! I love the photos!
Thanks, Amy and Steve! I was super hard to do...!
What a magical place, Lisa. I feel like I just enjoyed a mini-vacation while reading about your home and seeing the amazing photographs. Just beautiful!
I looked at the entire picture of the location, and the home itself, and my next thought was . . . 'in your DREAMS....' haha!
FABULOUS place; wonderful pictures.. and entertaining blog!
A winning combination ~ and thanks for sharing!
