Eyes Swollen Shut

The tree pollen count is at the highest level possible in our county here in Central Florida. I have had allergies all my life, but have never been bothered too much by the pollen except in my sinuses. Something is wrong, however, as my eyes are nearly swollen shut.

Is my body reflecting an unconscious state of mind -- shutting myself off from all the sadness around me? I don't think so as I am feeling hugely optimistic these days. When I pull myself out of the minutae of housing crisis details and focus ahead on the bigger picture for my customers, I see a light at the end of the tunnel in my immediate surroundings.

So, what is up with the physical manifestation on my eye lids? They are puffy, swollen, burning and itching -- I have aged thirty years over night.

Yes, I shed a tear or two over the Oscars during which I perceived some genuine emotion expressed by the actors. I was touched especially by statements regarding gay rights and other issues that are within our collective grasp to remedy. My tears were not artificial in this sense, so surely caused no biological malady of the magnitude I am experiencing.

In result, I ask all my OS friends, as I have no access today to a doctor: If your eyes became swollen, itchy and burning, what is the real world salve for this condition? Everything I have tried in my possession inhouse seems to hurt more than help.

Thanks for your advice for my tiny little problem -- I need my eyes to be open and functioning for everything I am doing, in conjunction with so many others,  just now!

  Is it this????!!!!

Hmmm sorry to hear about your eyes. Do you wear contacts? definitely do not today. A warm compress made from a washcloth intermittently through the day may help as well as placing cucumbers or cooled chamomile tea bagson your eyes... But if it continues make sure and see someone eye infections are bad news.
Get eye drops specially for allergies - you can get the OTG at a drug store. They BURN like crazy, but they do clear up the weasel-eyed look just fine.
Gads. You might try munching on raw carrots, lots of nature's Nantes`Fancy carrots? Some homegrown carrot varieties resemble more a celeriac bulb-root, than a slender orange carrot. Carrots can grow real crooked in clumpy soils. One pebble in the clay earth, a a root leader carrot tip will do it. I mean "do it"? The root will swerve and appear knotted weird. Yummy. Mangled looking. Wrinkled. All Scrunched Up.
Try a Danver?
A Yellowstone?
A open-pollinatingYaya OG?
A hybrid roots is deep orange.
huh.
I remember a child with glue.
She played with Super Glues.
OY! O scream:`My eyes shut!
Serious.
I hate eye colds. Miss Sand Lady?
Or, Mr Sand Man pays a night visit.
Then, lalucas? That's eye mucous?
Never get dental root canals, onions?
Boys? pick Jalapeno? Ya porpoise? Ow.
A porpoise will bawl his eyes out. huh. ?
For today: I second Sandra's suggestion for Visine AC or some equivalent. She's right--they're going to burn like acid. But they'll help. And try to keep your eyes closed for a few minutes after you use them.

Then call an allergist for a longer-term fix.

I've been on a course of sublingual allergy drops for a year and a half and it's cut down significantly on everyday incidences of itchy swollen inflamed conjunctivae. Alas, it's out-of-pocket, about $100 a month.

Over the counter Zyrtec, taken every day, will also help keep the worst allergy symptoms tamped down.

But direct contact with allergens will still cause flares.
Thanks, surreal -- you and my office are on the same page. I have a chld's Benadryl in my system, two cucumbers for my eyes (off at the moment) and two tea bags for later. Much ouchiness, still...

Sandra, been using the kind I normally use for dry eye, but I like the idea that there are some for allergies. Will head over this afternoon.

Arthur, love the images. I look just like the blond above, but it is now into my cheeks as well...I am a mess!
just be warned, they burn like a m*therf*cker! They aren't like normal drops at all. But they really do work - they get rid of the red and more importantly, calm the ever-loving ITCH.
Thanks VR and Sandra -- as soon as I finished working on the latest Relator fundraiser ticket spreadsheet, I will be off to Walgreens. I hope it works, I am dying now!
Duh, REALTOR fundraiser -- I don't call myself a Real a tor...:)
I think Sandra has the right idea...I've never had this problem. I think I've used ice cubes but I think that made it worse. Just letting you know I'm thinking of you and hope you figure this out. Sounds miserable!
lalucas, Have you started any new medication recently? How 'bout different foods, soaps, been near any latex, different inks? What exactly are you doing for the fundraiser you spoke of? You need to ascertain the cause of this and then you'll know better how to treat it. Do you have any wheezing or shortness of breath?
My son had a very mild allergy to latex, never any problem...just sometimes made him itchy.A week ago today he was at the dentist having extensive work done, (I wasn't there), and the dentist wore latex gloves. % hours later we were in the er and he was having a full blown reaction to latex. Eyes swollen shut, his lips were grotesque they were so swollen, his tongue was swelling, working to the back of his mouth. So even if you have had a mild reaction to something in the past, you can have a hum-dinger now or in the future. Get some benadryl and get yourself seen if it's getting worse. Take care.
It's also possible you have pinkeye or some other kind of infection. The high pollen count would seem to indicate it's allergies, but if you don't get relief soon, talk to a doctor.
Lalucas, if you don't have access to a doctor, I second Junk1's suggestion: think back and figure out if you've started using a new product lately and if so, get rid of it.

Also, your pharmacist at Walgreen's or wherever will likely be able to help--at least a little. Pharmacists seem more willing to dole out advice these days about OTC products. One recently saved me what would have surely been a $100 uninsured trip to the dermatologist's office by suggesting an OTC remedy that I wouldn't have considered. Lucky for me, it worked (cheaply). Also, some pharmacies now operate walk-up clinics. Use the resources at your local drug stores before walking into the doctor's office or emergency room--especially if you're uninsured or strapped for cash.

I hope you feel better soon.
I agree with the suggestion to try allergy drops you can buy over the counter. If that doesn't work, time to see the doctor.

Allergies are a strange thing. Your body's reaction to air-borne particles changes with time. I used to suffer terrible congestion in the autumn, but not anymore. However, now I have year-round drainage into the throat that makes me sound more and more like Clint Eastwood! My wife is sick of hearing me clear my throat...
Do you have lots of crusty stuff in your eyes along the lashes? If so, it could be bacterial conjunctivitis which will need medication from your doctor. I'm wondering why your cheeks would be red, though. Did you eat or drink anything different, or use a different cosmetic? This sounds like a severe allergic reaction to more than just pollen. Let us know how you progress.
What a great family we are here at OS!. Thanks, Mary, Allie, Edgar, Steve and Lisa -- pleased to meet you Junk1 and thanks for your thoughts as well.

Actually, I wish it was allergies. I am fairly certain it has something to do with one of the many tubes of makeup or eye makeup brushes that I use. Right now, I am not inclined to throw out the lot and start over.

I have very sensitive skin to begin with -- I didn't wear eye makeup until well into my 40's in result. Some of my issue might be that I have been using Lancome eyemake remover more than usual. Prior to that I was using Johnson's baby gel with Aloe to take off makeup. I am beginning to wonder if it is some weird combination of the two things. I had some baby gel on my cheeks last night as it was running down with my tears at the Oscars -- I haev used that on my skin for years with no incident so it makes no sense except in combination with something else.

Whatever it is, it is wicked as today I had nothing on my eyes but cucumbers and still they feel burned. Such a weird thing -- I do appreciate all your suggestions. The issue with a doctor is that it is season down here so all doctors are maxed out with the influx of snowbirds. I could probably get an appt. but don't know if I need a dermatologist or an eye doctor, although I am leaning toward the former.

I don't have a GP anymore as I left my last one for charging for a missed appointment...I know, my fault....So, on top of everything else, I need to find a doctor, then go to that person.

Again, small potatoes in the grand scheme -- thank you all for your suggestions. I am using the Visine that my husband had at home, but it is not the one for allergies. Tomorrow, I guess I will have to try it but it feels more like a skin thing and my eyes themselves are not red or irritated, just the lids and surroudning areas...
Lisa--The Zyrtec is powerful stuff. Also there is a lesser known eye drop called Systane I bought over the counter that helped a little.

But the REALLY good stuff is all prescription. . .
