Nothing delights and astounds me more than the earthly varieties of life and habitat. And just as these two wonders are inseparable, I try not to compartmentalize myself into 'thinking man' and 'feeling man' since I can't really experience one without the other. Moreover, I was just expressing to my son last night how amazed I am that the work of evolution, in particular 'natural selection', leaves its signature all over 'creation'. It's constantly being revealed in the various structural and functional adaptations to the earth by currently living forms ---and, frequently, vice versa. This concept of Gaia, of a living, morphing geophysical entity that is both genesis engine and home to all living things, is central to my concept of self. I am as much a revelation of Mother Earth's beating heart as I am an American, a socialist or an atheist. All this serves to remind me that no Christian or Muslim or Jew is exempted from being human or acting humanely by believing in God. Likewise, no non-believer is ever banished from the human family for not believing either. We are all joined together at the deepest prehistoric levels of relatedness and no Texas or Louisiana school boards can make it otherwise by clumsy fiat.
