Today Conan O'Brien was vindicated. His seven month run on The Tonight Show was nominated for an Emmy. Jay Leno was conspicuously absent from the Emmy list, even with NBC's ad campaign. Meanwhile, TBS (O'Brien's future home) had put “The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien” up for consideration. Not NBC. Why would they put him up for an Emmy? They were trying to sweep him under the carpet; they even took all of his Tonight Show episodes down from nbc.com.
But, the best part of the situation? The Emmy's are being broadcast on NBC. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall if Conan O'Brien won?
So, Conan's Emmy nomination tickles me more than I would like to admit. I know, it's petty. But sometimes being petty is really fun.
It reminds me of the time that I ran into a friend's ex-fiance at a party. The ex had not only cheated on my friend and broken off their engagement, but he had moved in with the new woman within two days of breaking my friend's heart. So, the night that I saw her ex-fiance at the party I gleefully chatted to him about my friend's new boyfriend, the great new job that she had, and the fact that she was happier than she had ever been. Poor ex-fiance though. He had gotten dumped and kicked out of his own apartment and was couch surfing. And no one but me was talking to him at the party. His sleaziness had become too much even for his friends.
And that is what Jay Leno is doing now, standing alone at a keg party trying to figure out why no one wants to drink a beer with him. Which is what he deserves. Leno didn't even try to hide the fact that he was interested in elbowing Conan out. He even talked about his desire when Conan O'Brien's tenure at The Tonight Show was only 5 months old.
“If it were offered to me, would I take it? If that's what they (NBC) wanted to do, sure. That would be fine if they wanted to,” Leno said.
And that is what he did.
I really want to make a pun about the car loving Leno being a "tool" or something about a "petty party."
But, instead I will just say congratulations Conan, you deserved the nomination.
