Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Update: My Son's Interview on "Morning Joe" Went Well

Rate: 34 Flag

 !
The Zeroes

Well,  Rand did just great! You might be able to see it on the MSNBC website.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my older son Randall recently wrote a memoir about his incredible experiences and bad luck in the past decade, called The Zeroes: My Misadventures in the Decade Wall Street Went Insane.

Rand was a journalist/magazine publisher who lost his business, his dream and just about all his savings in the recent financial meltdown. But it left him an incredible story.

Here are a few of the reviews of The Zeroes

Tomorrow (Thursday) morning Rand will be talking to Joe Scarborough about the book.

Rand is bracing for a tough talk, as Joe knows many of the dozens of well-known financial people, politicians, and actors Rand met, and whom he depicts with all their human frailties and greed.

Some of the characters in The Zeroes include John Travolta, Martha Stewart, Peter Max, Diana Ross, Lenny Dysktra, Al Gore and John McCain, whom Rand played craps with late into the night, in Puerto Rico.

The interview should be interesting. So if you have a chance, check it out -- now at 8:45 am on Morning Joe, MSNBC, tomorrow, Thursday.

Thanks OSers, from a proud mom!

Hey Lea, terrific news. I love Morning Joe. I will be watching with the pride of an ever so light connection with his mom :)

That's very cool! I may actually be able to catch that.
Congrats! Too early for me out here, but I'd love to read this book...
Of course, I can record...Signed Techno Slow : )
Very very cool! I guess we know where you're going to be tomorrow morning. I'm not an early bird, and I don't usually watch Joe, but I'll definitely set my DVR.
I think it will be hard-hitting and may even mention the part I played as a loyal mom. Kind of nervous about that aspect.
I'll be watching!
proud mama!

and well you should be
Wow! Awesome news Lea!
I will try to post it for you. I will have to remind myself to turn on the show. Mika is on vacation, so it's all guys.
Huzzah! Such an underused word. Congratulations too.
I like the use of that. Most appropriate, "Hello..."
So exciting, Lea. You are justly proud. Hope to catch the interview on Morning Joe.
Good grief, is there ANYTHING you and your family can't do? Tell him best o' luck for tomorrow for me. I'm sure he'll acquit himself well.
That's great. I bet you are a proud Mom, and will be taping it also. I hope Joe isn't his usual assh--e self, but he may be in a good mood, unless he lost a lot of money, then, well, who knows.., I wish him lick!
will record on dvr. it's a testament to how much i like you (and how much i want to see/hear your son) that i'll watch [herk] joe scarborough to accomplish that. xo
Thanks, guys for understanding my pride.

Scanner, love your Freudian slip. I hope Rand can lick 'em (in the pugilistic sense of course!).
I will definitely catch this tomorrow! Congratulations! R
Wow! Hope it goes well for him!
Cool, will turn on!
I'll be watching!!!!!! RRRRRRRRRR for a brilliant son raised by a good mama!
Wow, that is terrific, Lea. I'm fearful FOR him, and I don't even know him. I'm sure he is up to the challenge -- he IS your son, after all.
Lezlie
I hope that Willie Geist does the interview as well. He's more my guy.

Brilliant. Enjoy his moment in the sun! Hope it brings him luck!
Wish I could watch it!
Very cool! Will try to remember to watch but in case I forget, I hope there will be at least clips online (these days usually not a problem) and yes, would love you to blog about how you think it went and what it was like watching him. I can only imagine how vicariously nervous but proud you must be feeling!
Congratulation to your son and yourself. He obviously had a good mentor. I can feel your pride ... it is awesome.
Here's the thing. I will not have access to the live feed of course. However, I am sure that there will be a video posted at MSNBC's site later, and I will be on that site like a hawk watching for it.

This is very exciting, Lea. I cannot imagine how you must feel.
Fantastic! Congratulations to you both.
Awesome news! Looking forward to hearing more about it too! Best. R
Well done, Mom & Son.
Well, let's see. . .it's 7:20 AM now. Can I remember to watch at 8:45? I hope so, because it sounds like a fascinating segment. Also, I feel as if I know you and there's a connection, so I'll be rooting for your son. (Who sounds like he doesn't really need cheers from the peanut gallery in order to shine!)
That was a terrific interview, Lea. You must be so proud!
Thanks for the support guys. I think he did very well, and the John McCain anecdote was especially fun.
It was a wonderful interview, Lea. All the best to Rand on the success of his new book.
Thanks, Kathy. And thank's for posting about it on FB.
Congratulations. Your son did great! But not enough of him and too much of Joe--as usual.

I'm going to order his book. Sounds like some fun and necessary reading.
