Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Here's the Link to My Son's Segment on Morning Joe

Rate: 20 Flag

The interview about his memoir The Zeroes,  went well this morning.

Here's the link to the interview, which is about five minutes long:

I usually exercise at the time Rand went on, at around 8:50 am. This time though, I sat on the couch. I was worried.

Jim Cramer was on the show earlier, and since he is a character in the book, and not in a good way, I was worried there would be a debate and Rand would be crushed in a Cramer-Scarborough sandwich. Didn't happen. Cramer left, and Joe was a pussycat.

Luckily for me, Joe did not ask about my mentions in the book, but he did ask for more info about the night Rand played craps with John McCain, one of dozens of crazy anecdotes in the book. My son may be young but he seems to have been at the right place at the right time for the past decade.

Btw, if you're interested in checking out the book on Amazon, you can find the link under my profile on the left. Can't blame me for that. I'm his mom.

He may look like a grown man to you, but to me he's still my little boy.
Thoroughly impressive. I will be buying the book. Somehow I trust Randall's point of view. I liked his analysis that Wall Street used to be so much about getting businesses started and growing but now it is all about gambling.
It was an excellent interview, and Rand and the book were well promoted. You can be happy with it and proud of your son.
The trouble is, he started out as an observer and wound up caught up in the mess, losing all of his life savings, as well as his magazines. But he wound up with a story that stands up as a morality tale as well as a colorful read.
Hey Lea, I saw Randall this morning. He's quite the literary mover and shaker! What a history, and now editing The Beast, and you on Salon...very interesting :) He seemed accustomed to being on camera...cool and collected throughout.
No matter how old they get, they are always our "little boys", Lea. Congratulations. ~R~
bluestocking, good call. He was on camera for several years on CNN fn, when his magazines were read by most of the financial world.

Thanks, FusanA. So true.
Thanks for the link, as I was already at work when the segment aired. I'll be sure to watch it later.

Congrats again!
Lea, I see your eyes, so wide open and beautiful brown. This is a book I'd love to read. Maybe it will help answer the 'I'm broke! how did I get here?' questions we're all asking ourselves. I hope it gets huge play and that he's on more shows because you can't buy this kind of PR. He did great!
Jeannette, the interview only takes about five minutes but he packs lots of info into it.

Gabby, funny someone else noted the similarity there. I don't see it. He looks most like his paternal grandma I think.
I just love your proud Momma words...you've done well Lea, really well, with that 'boy' of yours : )
Just Thinking ... sweet words. As I've mentioned. I'm more excited about his appearance than I would be if I appeared there.
I really enjoyed the interview. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Kanuk. Nothing a mom likes better than sharing good news about her children -- even when they're grown.
Oh Lea, I'm so miffed. I knew I'd be busy with the arrival of out of town guest so I set my TV to record the episode. The electricity went off momentarily during a rainstorm and I forgot to reset it. I MISSED IT!! Now the video won't load. I'll try again later, but judging by the comments, it was a terrific interview. Was that a button that just flew by? :)
He did a wonderful job! Very poised and compelling . . .
Fay, just click on the link above.

Holly, it's strange when you son is old enough to be balding awhile.

Thanks, Owl. He held his own and kept the interviewers interested.
He did a great job - he was born to it. You must be busrting proud. I am very happy for both of you!
I watched the interview. Your son did well. I'm going to get the book.
R
He did great! I particularly liked his "elevator pitch" explaining the title (which I'd assumed referred to the decade as well as of course a slam on the "villains") -- succinct, catchy and articulate. But he was good throughout -- very polished and represented his book very well. Tough gig, too - having to address multiple people around a table as well as being on camera!!
It was a rather daunting table to keep eye contact with, indeed. But Joe was surprisingly respectful and even gave him a blurb for the next printing. "Great book."
Mine are grown and I can't help but feel every pain and give much unasked advice! :-)
he did great, Lea, I wish he'd had more time to tell his story
They are always our little ones. And both of you are proud of yours too, I know.
Congratulations! What a great inside story he has! R
I enjoyed his segment. I was proud of him for you. I was proud of him for him. it was great.
Great interview -- agree with what others said about having to deal with multiple interviewers. He did a great job! You have reason to feel very proud, Lea. Randall obviously has the Lane passion and charisma as well as storytelling skills. Can't wait to see him on The Daily Show (hope? hope?)!
Stupendous interview, he's so intelligent, articulate and poised. Well, what else would I expect? Sorry I missed it in person. He's always going to be your little boy, no surprise you're his biggest fan.
Thank you all for the understanding of why I'm so proud.
Great interview. The part about McCain is intriguing. A fascinating story. Thank you for including the link!
I wanted to wait until I had a chance to see it before I commented -- he did very very well! So poised and handsome, and knowledgeable too. You must be bursting with pride. Let us know if he appears on other shows.
