“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!”
And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places.
I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!.
I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks.
Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again.
I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!
Hi everyone, from Italy. Will have loads of time to read your posts on the next part of the journey on a boat in the Black Sea. Third honeymoon's the charm. (And the last!)
Hi Lea, I love your post, especially the last "work of art". Unfortunately, there might be a lot more security around that one than the others.... Safe travels!
If you haven't seen #1 and #2 yet, I think the sheer size will impress. Probably the same for #3 in an altogether different way. If you don't get a quickie of Geo, Lake Como is beautiful so it won't be a lost opportunity.
I could see any of these gorgeous creations many times and not be tired of them. But I'm amazed the George is as beloved as David, at least in Northern Italy.
I would have had trouble reducing the list to only three, is the hall leading to the David still lined with unfinished marble statues? that was the site that blew my mind, how the living forms seemed to be pre-existent, freed from their prisons of rough stones by the artist's tools
So Lea - what's going on? We are living parallel lives? I was in Chappequa and then went to Rome? Granted not on a honeymoon. We just have to meet in the same place in this world one day. Have a marvelous time!!!!
How in hell is "Clooney" an Italian name? Cant be! There is no "y" in the Italian alphabet! Enjoy your trip. For the times Ive been in Italy Id have to say almost every inch of it presents itself as art. The only part that didnt is all the trash piling up in the streets of Naples when they "ran out of room at the dump."
Rome! Rome! ROME! Have you seen the Forum yet? Or cast your three coins in the Trevi Fountain (yes, I know it's a cliche, but what a gorgeous place)? We loved Rome, but we only had three days there and you need a lot more time than that to properly explore it. Let us know what the Black Sea's like and give my regards to Constantinople!
Hey, that's no way for a recently married lady to talk. A recently married woman? Well, that's another matter.
Having spent a little time with Nick Clooney, George's dad, I can confirm the apple didn't fall far from the tree. In fact I broke him up with an old joke about the Blarney Stone.
Not by the way, my sister Marquita does a pretty fair imitation of Rosie Clooney -- does that score me any points?
Oh, you funny woman. I loved this. I was just thinking, why in the world would she be writing on her honeymoon? Glad to see you are not. Have a beautiful time, Lea.~r
Why wasn't I TOLD George Clooney was Italian??? =o)
I absolutely concur with your first two choices. Of course, there's an awful lot of other great art to see in Italy. Such as the Basilica of St. Francis in Assissi. Almost hard to know where to look first.
Have a great trip! I'm envious as all begot. rated.
Buffy W I am late with this blog but you are wrong about Rosemary & George. Rosemary was George's aunty. George's father is just as gorgeous as his son. Drool, drool.

Happy honeymoon!
Buon divertimento ed auguri per l'anniversario!
enjoy your honeymoon
Have a marvelous time!!!!
And Roy, I agree those unfinished works of marble by Michelangelo show his genius perhaps even more than his finished works.

Rosemary is George's grandmother. Don't be writing on your honeymoon...well, beyond a hello now and then, lol.
