Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Chocolate, Swans, Flowers, Canals & More: Belgian Spring!

Spring continues to warm the top half of the world, including the European country of Belgium. (My alternative headline was: Brussels Sprouts!) And on a recent April trip I took lots of photos of this joyous season, some of which I'm sharing here.

I first visited Belgium in the 1960s, as a young honeymooner, when Bruges was still an undiscovered, enchanting town with few tourists. About 10 years ago I returned as a travel writer and  updated the section on Bruges and Ghent in the Fodor's guidebook on Belgium.

By then, the special qualities of this country -- the hearty food, the solemnity of World War I trenches, the fairy tale towns sprinkled in the countryside, the sophistication of Brussels --  were well known to travelers.

It's hard to capture the cool air along the canals, the salty taste of mussels and frites, the tang of Belgian  frothy fruit beers. But read along, look at the photos, and perhaps you'll feel the joy of a lovely country reawakening from winter, like a sleeping beauty.

Enjoy the warm, wherever you are!
What colorful, hopeful photos. The angel watching over all and the flower market, the swans and the single women's housing were all fascinating. Those chocolate shops were really decorated to the hilt. I loved this tour. Thank you!!
What gorgeous pictures! And those strawberries can't be real!!! BIG egg indeed!!
Wow... and wow again when I saw the Neuhaus hahaha
My friend used to bring me that chocolate when she visited her parents.
Beautiful! I expect to see it on the front.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
There's something about strawberries that make me think of big jewels -- too pretty to eat.
I always thought Bruges depressing - maybe from the movie. But this is a wonderful portrait of a beautiful place. brussels Sprouts, indeed!
These are wonderful photos. I love the art nouveau influence and the chocolate, oh the chocolate... *sigh* Off to work I go...
The people of Bruges have a mixed feeling about that film noir, with Bruges in the title. Actually, Bruges is one of the prettiest towns in all of Europe. When the sea silted up, it was forgotten by most people -- after years of prosperity in the Middle Ages, trading with England. When tourists discovered it in the 20th century, the center was almost unchanged from then, and truly exquisite.
Never been to Belgium! Thanks for the lovely photos!

Glad you enjoyed the virtual visit, Toritto!
Gorgeous photos, they cheered my spirit. I admit I lingered long over the precious chocolates in their lovely showcases. Sigh.
These are gorgeous photos, Lea. They make me want to pack...
I wish I were there!

Belgium's a country I have only passed through once on the train, but never really spent any time exploring. Now you've shown me how negligent I've been! Great little travelogue.
Simply gorgeous photographs, Lea! ~r
Wonderful, fantastic photos. I'm really trying not to eat sweets right now and you just blew it for me. HA :)
I know, the chocolates are incredible! Godiva comes from Belgium, after all. Luckily I walked alot and didn't gain (much) weight. :)
I adore the market scene and the canals, bridges and houses. They are so bucolic in some cases. Thanks for sharing, Lea. Happy spring to you too!
♥R
I have always loved Belgium! Thanks for this delicious arm chair trip!
gorgeous, lea, all of them, but especially that first photo of the canal and the houses along its edges ... [sigh]
What a treat Lea! The photography is tops. Did you ever see the film "In Bruges"? If not, I recommend it...a little violent, but stil a great film.
Yessss. Sweet, lovely, striking...and more.
What is wrong with those two women? They are standing in front of a trough of chocolates, looking like someone just died. Just put your faces down a foot lower and munch, ladies! What lovely images, Lea. Thank you. Those strawberries. Someone artfully placed each and every one.
Wonderful pictures, especially the chocolates...
Does the Benguinage take Americans? I could adopt a swan or something...
Fabulous, amazing, luscious . . . there is something about tooling around in a place so rich in history . . . what a lovely place to celebrate spring!
"sigh"..

Lea I swear sometimes I'm just plain jealous!

Still loving the fact that you've gotten so much out of life though :).

Rated for sunny skies and chocolate (but of course ;).
The Belgians take chocolate shoppes to a whole different level! So attractive. The photos are beautiful!

I love the photos. Lea Lane being like Lois Lane with Superman as the photographer. Alright that joke was stretched but it was a nice bit of sunshine on a snowy Toronto day.
Each shot was more spectacular...not only do you have a way with words, but your "eye" is excellent. Bruges is one city I have on my bucket list.
Lovely...there is so much in Belgium to delight! xox
Brussels Airlines' next flight out of Chicago is this Thursday. Booking it now. As beautiful as the towns and countryside are, I'm afraid you'd find me grazing from one end of the chocolate counter to the other and back.
Stunningly beautiful!
A professional photographer among your many other talents! Gorgeous shots, perfect explication, except wth are brussels sprouts? Love Brussels, haven't been there since the 70's, but it looks much the same. People don't know what they're (usually) overlooking.
What a wonderful collection of spring photographs from Belgium! So nice to see them here too. Congratulations and more...
Beautiful! I do feel it!
I sure am glad you all enjoyed this little pictoral. I have some nifty photos coming later in the week, if I do say so myself. Many thanks all!
Fantastic! Those strawberries were to die for...and the chocolate.

You have quite a wonderful life, Ms. Lane.
Lea! You wrote the section on Bruge and Ghent in Fodors???? OMG. My sister and I lived and breathed what you wrote two years ago December. Bruges was incredible, but I shall always vividly remember The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb in Ghent, which we were lucky enough to see and listen to the taped information to the end just as they were closing. A mystical experience. Loved Brussels as well. Such a beautiful country. Thank you for the reminder. Those are the most glorious strawberries I've ever seen--and I live in a place that has a yearly strawberry festival. I'll sleep well tonight!
Yes, I did write that chapter in Fodors. Hope you go back some day!
Wow, what pictures! All of a sudden, I have a craving for chocolate-covered strawberries.

I have to say that I spent 24 hours in Brussels and didn't like it. Of course, it was pouring rain when we visited Grand Place. At least the Heineken was cold and plentiful!
Oh, Lea, I want to go now!!! I want the chocolate, the flowers, the market, I want it all. Thanks for taking me there. R
Your photography is as stunning as your writing! Any time I see pictures of Europe, I long to be there once again. I was only there twice , which of course is not enough. The secrets and stories that lie within the historical buildings and roads intrigue me.
what a beautiful compilation of pics - thanks for sharing them with us.
Lea Lane. I had one of those 3AM dreams.
The Moon.
I was locked inside a Brussels Sprout Store.
You were happy.
I had nausea.
I think it was the chocolate dipped Brussels.
Lean Lane left me.
You went to a redneck barroom with Kerry.
You took a cocker spaniel for conversation.
Kerry ate waxed fruit in the Kennel Window.
Lilac - the beagle - will soon have a new litter.
Lea Lane will be the name of one. K- litterbug?
You want a half Gold Lab & half lil' Poppy Bagel?
You can get a pet White Swan and name Chocolate?
Such evocative images! They reminded me of a Spring trip to Amsterdam, with daffs nodding beside the canals and chocolates blooming in all the shop windows.
Another place for my Bucket List. So beautiful! Thanks, Lea.
Gorgeous photos, thank you for posting. How cheering for spring!
-Erica
Nice to see old friends and new, cheering on spring!
