Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Why I Write - - Here

Rate: 48 Flag

I want to create an accessible record of my existence.

I like being associated with Salon, especially in their new incarnation.

It keeps me out of trouble.

Writing gigs that offer pay have dried up. And even when they paid they paid a pittance.

When people ask what I do all day I have something plausible to tell them that’s associated with Joan Walsh.

OS brings me loads of Facebook friends.

It keeps my hands and mind occupied so I don’t eat all day.

It’s a great excuse to not exercise.

I like getting ratings and comments.

I like giving ratings and comments.

I enjoy feeling that I'm in a community.

I have gained virtual (sometimes morphed into real) friends.

I hope to gain more friends.

Friends here offer support.

Ageism is minimal. I feel I am me, not older me.

At this point I don’t expect anything but a platform and don't define myself by the editors, so I’m often pleasantly surprised.

I can pick up breath-mint money from adsense.

I haven’t found a better fit for me on the web.

It’s a pretty safe place to rant and expose, and to get some wise feedback, good and bad.

I can read/post while watching junk TV, eating a turkey sandwich and talking on the cell.

I like seeing my writing published and read.

OS brings me to some great writing.

OS encourages me to write.

And -- I need to write. For me, writing is living.

Don't ever stop, Lea. You are always worth reading.
Exactly. And we are all the better for your OS addiction.

I agree with OEsheepdog.

Today I am in the public Library. Quiet.
This morning I was visiting my neighbor.

You tease. The SalonéOpen Salon is Big Trouble.
Maybe we all can make Mr. Kerry Lauderman a Pie.
We can add a Big Dollop of Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.
Another reason to keep it up: I enjoy reading your posts. Tell me how adsense works, prithee. R.
Thanks for the great story. Agree with so many of your points.

As one who has been a fan for years and now feels privileged to "know" you a bit, I hope you'll keep writing well past any reasons or excuses.
Not a bad place to write indeed!! :)
Thanks, all you guys. Your support over the years always makes me feel good.

And, sorry you have so many troubles here, Art. But we love you! You know that.

And Erica, I have no idea how adsense works. Once and a while I get a check for a few cents. Maybe it's from somewhere else.
i'm thrilled to be able to read you through your blog; i'm honored to know you through OS.
All great reasons. And always glad you're here, Lea.
"I like seeing my writing published and read".

Me too.

Well said Lea. Honest and gracious as always.
One of the benefits of writing here (though I'm not at it as much these days) is getting to know cool people like you. I've learned lots from reading your stuff: lessons in grace and graciousness, as well as living life fully and writing about it well. OS is a much richer place because of you.
It keeps my hands and mind occupied so I don’t eat all day.
It’s a great excuse to not exercise.
I can relate! Thanks
Glad you do write here, Lea. Love to hear what you are thinking! Keep at it.

Portables Lea Portables...
HUGGGGGGGGGGG
All of it, applies from a regular readers perspective too :D.

OS has it's problems, but where doesn't? Anywhere that I can call my own little corner without cost or serious castigation is I think pretty cool :). And just look at the folks here?! The stuff they write, the way they think, from the dust ups to the circling of the wagons for one of our own in travails. Community. Yeah.

Rated for a Leah post is always worth a look ;).
And i like reading your work. So glad you stay here.
Lea, What a great contribution to this question. I know that writing is what we do, but sometimes, doesn't it feel like writing is what we are?
Well miss, I do believe you have spoken for quite a few of us today. Well said.
yes! and how fortunate for those of us who've been graced with your wit, charm and friendship...
Who can argue with any of this? Made me smile.
Well done Lea. I love "keeps me out of trouble" R
This is such an insightful, true, generous, and positive post. Thanks, Lea!
This is so awesome Lea! I agree 100%!
You made enough on Adsense to buy breath mints??? You rock!!!!
Also, "The Devil makes work for idle hands," as Grandma used to say. I'm very glad I found you.
sadism...or the other one...whatever. I'm glad you get a running record, though. some have not been so fortunate.
Your reasons are true for most all of us. I'm happy to be one of your "virtual" friends.
I've had AdSense about a year now and I have just about enuf to buy a pack of breath mints. Thanks for reminding me to check my account. And, of course, what Sheepie and Lezlie said, and probly what everybody else said were I to scroll down and read them all.
Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Open Salon?
Rick: My health. I came to Open Salon for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the World Wide Web.
Rick: I was misinformed.
My faves from your list:

I like getting ratings and comments.

OS brings me to some great writing.
OS encourages me to write.
And -- I need to write. For me, writing is living.

Simple, straightforward, and honest.
The first point my favourite but I relate to them all.

Rated for all the things we had no idea we knew until we wrote them down.
A blessing knowing you and your work Lea!
I know how you feel. And I love to read your posts. ~r
i'm so glad i met you here, lea, and that i get to read what you write. that's on my short list of why i still check in here.
I completely agree. Keep writing. I enjoy reading it. I cherish my OS virtual friends, they help keep me engaged, entertained and informed.
You right for all the write reasons -- keep it up!
Fine summary Lea. Many of us here benefit from your OS outlet.
I like reading why you like writing here.
You do good list writing as well. Careful that you don't get turkey sandwich shreds in your keyboard.
Tonight I had ribs.
And I'll add: I like to see what's going on with you people. I care.
You are one of the reasons why I love OS, Lea, even though I haven't been visiting much recently. Your generosity, wisdom, and wit are irreplaceable. Don't ever stop!
I think you've struck a chord here - actually I think you've struck up the band! Thank you for these wonderful reminders.
Thanks for specifying with this list, Lea. I love reading your tales, you've had such adventures, and such a way with words for even the quiet moments...
I realize as I read this list that I agree with so much...especially the first. : )
You got it! Well, except for that bit about keeping you from eating all day. I gotta get away from the computer to avoid that. And even you mention a turkey sandwich...
So true, so true. Sometimes I'm surprised that an online community has provided us with so much. There's not much else I can compare it to. Or compare you to!
And it's FREE, if you don't add in the food and drinks you suck down while you're in the OS Zone.
This is a marvelous list. I just smiled more and more with each item.

Although me personally? "It keeps me out of trouble" is my favorite.
I love your traveling tales.
Lea, you personally have added to my life. At times I feel that I could just call you and have a chat, or drop by Florida and say "Hi" I would love to be your neighbor....just like on OS!
