Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Emails are coming in from all over the world, celebrating this election. Here is a sampling from hundreds sent to the Caucus Section of The New York Times. Original syntax and spelling makes them even more wonderful. Read ‘em and weep –or smile.

The Headless Neighbor

For many years I lived in rural Pocantico, Hills New York, near the home of Washington Irving, the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Irving is buried in the cemetery near my house along with members of the Van Tassel family. Remember the fictional Katrina Van Tassel?

Will an Underperforming Voting Group Seal This Election?

In 2000, 537 Florida votes changed history, and we’ve suffered mightily since. That’s why it’s crucial to get out every vote possible next Tuesday, and not forget about the cohort that numbers over a quarter of the electorate: single women.

Before the Pennsylvania primary CNN commenRead full post »

Like most of us, I’m trying to find ways to cut back with a bit of cheer in this volatile financial situation. So here are some money-saving suggestions while my 401k fluctuates from bad to worse to bad, and the cable pundits drone on.

You can make this a game by adding yourRead full post »

With all the tension and anxiety of this last week of the election, below is the funniest interactive political site I've found. It features Sarah Palin in the Oval Office ( a parody, of course). It's tweaked regularly. Just click around on it, and enjoy!

Musings, Friday, around 3 am

This is ridiculous. I’ve been tossing almost an hour now. Should I take part of a pill? No, I’ll turn on the TV with the sleep element. 30 minutes, no 60. Too loud. I don’t want to hear the words. Just the noise. Repeat of Larry King. Michael Moore is on.Read full post »

Alone on a Cliff

In July, 2001, two weeks after I reserved a cabin on an island off the coast of New Brunswick Canada for a romantic getaway with my husband Chaim, he was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor, and three months later, he was gone.

The next summer,Read full post »

Today I signed and mailed my Florida absentee ballot for this historic election. Hard for me to believe, but my first presidential vote was for Lyndon Johnson, who later passed The Voting Rights Act at a time when blacks were frequently denied that right, let alone the possibility ofRead full post »

I was struck by one man at a recent McCain rally in Wisconsin. “I am begging you, sir. I am begging you, ” he beseeched. His name, I found out, is James T. Harris, and he is an African-American radio host/motivational speaker in Milwaukee, who may have been a setup. He… Read full post »

Hitchens Endorses Obama--Who's Next?

Christopher Hitchens, the brilliant, cynical commentator on American life and long-time Iraq war supporter has just written his endorsement on slate.com, by skewering McCain/Palin, especially Palin.  In part:

The most insulting thing that a politician can do is to compel you to ask your… Read full post »

Now is the Time for a “Moochcation”

Whether you're a moocher or a moochee, (or both) chances are that you've participated in the mooching experience even before this financial crisis. It's normal to visit family or stay with friends. But with the desperation level climbing, the economic future volatile, and the holidays ahead, I suggesRead full post »

Wisdom from a Hooker

According to the Pahrump Valley Times, a  legal brothel near Las Vegas called Angel's Ladies closed recently, perhaps because of the rising cost of gas.

Like most women, I'm programmed for intimacy and romance, and I usually empathize with the wife, having been one, twice.… Read full post »

Eat Crow? Hell Yes, To Win

The Obama team is suddenly making a huge effort to gain women’s votes, but many die-hard Hillary supporters – dozens of my acquaintances -- remain bruised and confused. The fact that Palin is on the ticket when HRC wasn’t even vetted may turn out to have beenRead full post »

I was visiting a donkey sanctuary in Aruba, and I saw a week-old donkey who couldn’t get up, and whose mother seemed disinterested. The Other Ground Zero

When I was a kid my Aunt Hilda took me to Gettysburg, where thousands of Union and Confederate troops battled to bloody deaths. Try as I might to conjure up the awfulness and randomness and loss, to me it still looked like a field.

Two Weddings and a Funeral

I’d rather be forced to read a dozen New York Times columns by Bill Kristol than go to a wedding alone. When the slow-dance music starts I usually head straight for the ladies room, or the door. And as for funerals, well, they’re obviously difficult for anybody. But the two weddings/… Read full post »

Ballsy Politics, and a Cautionary Tale

I know, I know: dismissing pit bull Sarah Palin and all her baggage seems like a -- excuse-the-expression -- no-brainer. An Ugly Duckling, Back-To-School Memory

With another school year starting, I think back to my least favorite first day in class, back in the 1950s when I was beginning seventh grade at Nautilus Junior High School in Miami Beach.  Kids called it “Nauseous” because of the color of the facade, and the lousy lunch/… Read full post »
