No, Lee, tell us what you REALLY think...

Open Call: Let's have an OS Meetup in New Orleans!

Rate: 23 Flag

 Following Rob St. Amant's suggestion:

Let's have an OS Meetup in New Orleans this Halloween!

No, seriously.  By late October, the weather will be bearable, hurricane season will be (mostly) past,  Southwest Airlines has some sweet direct flights from many major cities (and Freaky--FedEx can get you here overnight for about $20 and you could try your feet at smashing beignets or bread pudding with whiskey sauce), and nobody does Halloween quite like New Orleans.

Come see a grown man walk down Frenchmen street naked except for some strategically-placed Raggedy Ann dolls!

Have fun trying to figure out who's in costume and who's dressed that way because they're lunatics!

Go up to F&F Candle and Botanical on Broad St. and get all your voodoo and Santeria supplies!

Go to the only known zoo in the world that includes both a white alligator AND recipes for how to cook the various animals on display!

Head up to the Northshore to see one of those Hell Houses about what will happen to you if you don't repent of your wicked wicked ways!

Have a Sazerac at the Carousel bar!  (Or a Hand Grenade if you're a frat boy douchebag!)

And meet other OSers!

I'll be there.  You should be too.

Hooboy...
Second only to Mardi Gras in debauched chaos.
So, you pick the ONE TIME I can't go.
I'll be at my Grammy's near DC.

Hmph.
Jodi--Of course, you're always welcome to come at any time!
Oh, and of course...anyone that comes will get a chance to meet the WonderBirds in all their nymphomaniac, sexually-confused glory!
Last time I was there was for Southern Decadence.
THAT is when we should all go.
I never knew you could "wear" a drill.
Nawlins in October? It's possible.
Oh, the food alone would bring me to New Orleans. Memories of oyster po boy sandwiches and fried catfish and those beignets with a cafe o lait...YES!!! Wow. Can you imagine Freak on beignets? OSers and food and booze. What's not to like. I for one would love to represent the Canadian contingent.
Singing the McDonald's tune, "ba dah bah bop bah" I'm loving it!
Jodi--Of course you can wear a drill! It's always too hot on Decadence weekend to wear anything else!

(BTW, because of Decadence 2002, there's now a law in Lousiana that gives you three days jail time for "a public sex act that's deliberately designed to draw a crowd.")
Geez, I'm from New Orleans, and this won't be doable for me.
Hmmmm...I am intrigued. Put me down for a "maybe". Not sure if I can finish the dress I'm making out of cocktail umbrellas by then...
do you know how badly i want to do this!!! course lea lea dear you know if i come to new orleans i might end up like that lil bird and never want to leave you.. no specifically bc its you, though you do seem cool, no bc well i love new orleans..
hell it might get my ass moving to finish my novel!!!
only problem is this new job has rotating days off.. and i work nights so even if i could get like 2 days off in a row i would have to drive at midnight after work to get there.. no sleep and leave early in the morning the day i have to be back to work and not have sleep till i get home from work at 1 am..

*cries* why dont i live closer!!
We will certainly try to be there.

The idea of "costumes" will keep us consumed for months....

Let's keep the idea rolling.

Oh yes (how could I forget): COSTUMES, people! COSTUMES!
What happens to New Orleans hotel prices at Halloween?
You are awesome, Leeandra. Let me check my calendar.
Oops, I got carried away with enthusiasm. This is a great idea, but it probably won't work out for me.
This is completely possible. I actually might be able to do this.
New Orleans would be fun! I know Lonnie has talked about an OS prom in NOLA. Count me in for a NOLA trip *sometime*, though probably not this year. I can't do more than one OS trip in a six month period. Also it's hard to leave SF during its famous Halloween 'do.
Absolutely love New Orleans!!! What a perfect place for a gathering of souls. Wish I could be there. Bad timing for me and a long way from the SF Bay. Will be with you and all in spirit.
Oooooooh and I have a place in Metairie I can stay for free, and you're right airfare will be cheap but I might just drive to be able to have my mobility (only 14 hours!)
No place I have ever seen does Halloween like New Orleans.
Cool cool cool....
Mrs. Michaels (and others who might be interested)--Hotel prices are fairly reasonable then, not like during Mardi Gras or JazzFest.

My mother always stays in a place in the Garden District on Prytania called The St. Charles Guesthouse. It's a mom and pop place, Continental breakfast, nothing fancy, but cheap, clean, and has a pool and fantastic owners, Dennis and Joanne Hilton. It's one block from the St. Charles streetcar or 30 min. walk from the Quarter. www.stcharlesguesthouse.com

Trig--(and others who may be wondering) A car is not absolutely necessary in New Orleans. I've lived here without one for six years.

NOLA isn't a very big place, and most anything you'd want to see is accessible on foot or by one of the four streetcar lines. In fact, in the French Quarter, having a car is a total pain in the ass because of parking regulations.

But bring an umbrella, 'cause when it rains it pours!
OMG. I am SOOOOOOO tempted! Bookmarking this. Seriously. I've spent only 23 hours in New Orleans (two years pre-Katrina) and adored it; if I can make this work, I will!

Thanks for taking Rob's Advice. I think more people should. It's a great big country full of OSers and "unions" (as opposed to reunions, because there's no "re" until you've actually une-d in the first place) can and should happen all over the place, all the time.
Awwww, it sounds like fun but my vacation plan is already set and I can't afford a second trip this year. Next year you all need to make your plans a lot earlier so I can schedule!
Come to think of it, here's why I couldn't make this weekend: I will probably have to fly to NOLA late in August for a grandma birthday, and I will also be in NOLA for an academic conference on the weekend before Thanksgiving -- after which, I'll spend the week.

So if anyone cares to go in the range of Nov. 20-29, I'll be there anyway.
Yes, I agree. Bring me.

Now, when you say meet up with other OS'ers, are you referring to the phrase "...who's dressed that way because they're lunatics!" - or is that something altogether different?
............hhmmmmm...............
........................................................................

Okay. I'm in!
I love NO but I can't go, alas. And the food...my mouth is watering at the very thought.
Oh!! Oh!! I'll be able to come to this one!

AND I already have a costume!

happyhappyjoyjoy
When I lived in New Orleans we always considered Halloween the start of the party season, which would culminate four or so months later with Mardi Gras.

This is a GREAT idea and one I aim to get behind. Hooboy is right...
I'd love to do this! I keep wanting to plan a trip there to show Paul. Great idea. Of course, I'll have to check with Paul. And the cows.
I hope ya'll don't get arrested.
((((darhma)))) ... my separated at birth sister. If you go, I will have no choice but to go. We have mantras to swap. :)

Oh, and I can bring Julie's mother back from Canada with me. (cows permitting)
Ok. If Lonnie's going, I'll tell Gramma that I'll come up at Easter.

I hear he's still into showing off his rumpus.
Count me in.
I would try to make it, but I was down in the Louisiana once this year and before I left, the nice sheriff fellow said, "Don't come back, now, or I'll kill ya!"

Stupid restraining order!! :( All I did was buy one of them gator heads at the gas station and ran around a civil war battle field yelling 'I am the ghost of Gator Head Joe Jackson!!!' or something like that. You'd think a bunch of old people would have seen an gator head in their life time!

:)
Oh, that sounds absolutely wonderful. May the universe move in ways that may take me there.
So we've got a contingent of people that either will be there or haven't ruled out the possibility:

Jodi Kasten
bobbot
JK Brady
cartouche
spotted_mind
Brian B
denese
Mrs. Michaels
odetteroulette
trig palin
Verbal Remedy
Umbrella Kinesis
dharma bummer
Not Who You'd Expect
Lonnie Lazar
Julie Tarp
Brenda Gail

C'mon folks--let's show up those snooty Vegas people and show them how OS debauchery is done right!
I *think* I remember NO at Halloween---vaguely---or it could be Mardi Gras I'm thinking of---or maybe I'm recalling an acid trip---its all a blur.
m.a.h - i remember your early post(s) about NOLA ... i think i need to take your photo underneath a certain live oak tree i remember in Audubon Park, and on a particular balcony in the Faubourg-Marigny, and on the porch of a shotgun in the Irish Channel (if it's still there).

i'll bring the 'cid if you bring the smiles...
I was planning on no travel and all work from August until late December but a naught few days in NOLA might work. It is mighty cheap to fly from Tampa.

It is really really cheesy but the doughnuts at the Cafe du Monde in that atmosphere cannot be beat. Can we all meet up there at least once?
Lonnie--hmmmm....as long as you don't steal my underwear and put it all over the interwebs...

Dorinda--Beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde! Definitely...it's open 24/7, so it's a great place to eat some grease and bread and get caffeinated the morning after.
Now your talking, Sister! And right in my own backyard, too! I do think Nawlins is more herself when hot and steamy rather than quiet and dry.
This sounds great! I've never been, though I've always wanted to make it out for the Jazz and Heritage Festival. I'm going to look into air and train fares.
Leeandra-

If there's an OS New Orleans meet-up then count me and the wife in, provided we don't head to PDX for Halloween. We're right up the road in Mobile and that's a short jaunt for us.
@nora-

Not so sure you would want to go to Jazz Fest these days. At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, it was better 20 years ago. The best thing about being in NOLA then isn't what goes on in the morass up off Esplanade but the music in all the venues around town at night.
The "Endless Night Festival" seems like a lot of fun!
