Title
Assistant Guru (not to be confused with Assistant to the Guru)
Bio
Proud native Hoosier who’s settled permanently in New Orleans. Teach English. Live in an old whorehouse with three very talkative and sexually-confused birds and one very talkative bird that isn’t sexually confused at all but just wants what s/he wants, which is pretty much everything and everybody. They appear quite frequently in my writing. Former bedpan wrangler, radio announcer, preschool teacher, and freshman comp. instructor. Once accidentally picked out A Clockwork Orange for a make-out movie. Have a very rational appreciation for the works of Flannery O’Connor and the television show The X-Files and an irrational fear of Meg Ryan. All my friends are drunks.

I need to learn to play the guitar.

Rate: 9 Flag

(This needs to be sung to the tune of this.  I can't sing, but it's not like Malvina Reynolds really could either.)

I am dropping lots of students

I am dropping 'cause they don't show up

And they don't turn in their homework

And they roll their eyes at me

When I ask them for a doctor's note

Or subpoena or obituary

And they look at me like I'm crazy

When I ask why they weren't here.

And they are scamming their financial aid

And they're cashing in their Pell Grants

And they don't know what my name is

And it's not my fault they don't show

Because they didn't plan to study

Or attend class in the first place

And they've figured out the system

And they're dropping off my roll.

And they're going to be pissed at me

When they show up three weeks from now

And find out they're no longer

Enrolled students in my class.

But they can't complain about me

'Cause they don't know what my name is

Not that I didn't tell them

On the day they came to class.

And they'll call the dean and provost

And they'll call me a racist

And they'll bring their grandmothers in

But it won't do any good.

'Cause I take good attendance

And know what all their names are

Even though I've got two hundred

And they've just got one of me.

I am dropping lots of students

I am dropping 'cause they don't show up

And they don't turn in their homework

And they roll their eyes at me

When I ask them for a doctor's note

Or subpoena or obituary

And they look at me like I'm crazy

When I ask why they weren't here.

Maybe wear a bikini Leeandra. Maybe they'd pay attention then.

Seriously though, this is sad. Drop 'em!
You are doing a favor to the students who show up and the ones on the wait list. Kudos to you.
Best Wishes,
Blittie
I went to a university where many of the classes were held in large lecture halls, with a seating capacity of several hundred. There was no way that the professor could take attendance even if he or she wanted to.
R
Trig, I have threatened to carry a bullwhip to class before with that very reason in mind.

Blittie, yep.

Littlewillie, I'm allowed to drop them when they miss six days of a 3-day-a-week class. If they don't provide me with documentation for why they were absent, they're getting dropped.
your are teh awesome Leeandra. (as they say, you know).

I wish that I, and my kids, had you for a teacher.
good for you
good for those who ARE there
those who know your name
get your money for nothing and the chicks are free
- that's what they think - but not what you think.
Does the obituary have to be, like, current?
I have a dear friend who is leaving her job in community college financial aid exactly because of these students (she's going to another college with better attendance). The students who follow the rules (the ones who are actually doing their work) she never hears from. They're the ones who fill out the forms, show up, pay attention, and get the work done. She hears from all the students you're dropping, the ones with five terms of academic probation who she finally drops out of the financial aid system because of poor academic performance. So she gets to hear uneducated people who obviously haven't even tried, yell at her all day long about why she's taking their money away.

No fun.

She's quitting.

I don't blame you in the least. Make room for the students who want to be there.
