One Million Acts of Green

Rate: 6 Flag

So I'm writing for a new site—OneMillionActsofGreen.com--which I hope you will all check out.

One of the coolest features is the ability to enter your "acts of green," such as "I turn off the water when I brush my teeth," or "I have solar panels installed on my roof," into a "Green Calculator," which will tell you exactly how much carbon you're NOT putting into the atmosphere.

Other cool features are, of course, mine. Like, "How to Green Your Clean," that gives you some consumer advice about good, ecologically safe cleaning supplies as well as recipes to make your own environmentally friendly stuff.

Or a story about an insanely cool Chicago eatery that boasts its own organic rooftop farm.

If you do visit (and I hope you do) and register your “acts of green,” come back and report your carbon savings here. I’d love to hear about it!

Bump. Hello? Is this thing on?
Thanks for sharing, Leigh, and great to see you again!
Hi Leigh! Just returned from the green site and am proud to say I'm saving 10, 196 kg/year of my carbon foot print! I also pledged to bump that up with some major stuff (new doors and windows, etc.).

Thanks! Now I'm gonna go and read your cleaning tips.
Update: my savings are 14, 936 not 10,196 as I said before. Wow! What a cool site. I will share this with my friends for certain.
Good for you, Gracielou! And yeah, please do share. In addition to it being good for the environment to raise awareness, it also will help to keep me employed!
I've been taking part in this since it got started in Canada a year or two ago. my savings are about 4000kg/ year, but I find a lot of the acts of green listed on the American site are aimed at homeowners and are less accessible for most people.
Peppermint, yay! The Canada site was amazing--we're trying to reproduce that kind of enthusiasm with this one.

I'm actually in the process of working on new "acts of green" to add. I agree that many of the acts currently up are skewed toward homeowners, so will gratefully accept any and all ideas for new ones!
Does organic farming of recreational herbs count?

If, so, then I'm a Greenie!
Off the top of my head:
-reuse plastic grocery bags, or better yet, bring resuable ones with you to the store.
-Choose items with less packaging
- Donate old magazines to schools, hospitals etc
- if driving, plan trips to burn as little gas as possible ( as opposed to dashing all over the city)
- stick a "no bulk mail sign" on your mailbox ( I used to get massive amounts of flyers)
dispose of household hazardous materials properly empty propane tanks, dead batteries, etc)

As more stuff occurs to me, I'll pop back and post them
Hi Leigh, I'm glad to see you. This sounds like a good idea; I'll check it out.
Hey Leigh, I've been using my own grocery bags for over a year now, and not only does it keep the planet cleaner, it also declutters my kitchen. Of course, I'm also doing far more biking, less driving.
Thanks for the information about the restaurant. I will check it out when in Chicago.
Hey Kitty--good for you! I'm lucky enough to live a mere block and a half from my local market, so I walk most everywhere these days. (It's an exceptional week when my car makes it out of the driveway more than a few times.)

Wanna know something really surprising? Recycling one single aluminum can saves enough energy to power your television for three hours.

Probably the single most "impactful" green act you can take is to telecommute. Americans spend an average of 47 hours idling in traffic each year on their way to or from the office. Telecommuting just one day a week makes an enormous difference! Also, so much more relaxing!
