Putting a face on California Furloughs

Rate: 5 Flag

To Governor “Terminator” and the rest of the morons running California:

I thought I would take some time to personally tell you just how much you’ve screwed up the State of California. I imagine my story is much like the other citizens of this state, especially those of us who have been furloughed or worse, the unemployed. I work for the CSU system and have had my pay cut 10%. I suppose that’s better than those who’ve had to take a 15% pay cut or who can’t find a job at all. But your governing decisions have still made my life quite a living hell. Before the furlough, I could barely get by supporting a family of four. Now, it’s pretty much impossible. And because my partner is trying to become a teacher, our prospects in the next year probably won’t change all that much because you continue to cut education funding. Sure, you say higher education won’t get cut again, but we all know that’s a big load of crap. Right now, I have to worry about whether or not my furlough will continue or if I could get laid off later this year. I don’t doubt that it can be difficult to manage spending and income when the economy of the entire country sucks. But let’s be honest. This state was screwed up long before the US economy tanked. Have you actually been able to put out a decent budget since you took office? Personally, I think the recall of Gray Davis was the start of this problem. But the fact remains that California has gone down the toilet since you took over as governor. I’ve heard your spokesman argue that saving that 10-15% in pay from state workers really does help. But it only helps you and the legislature work some budget “magic” by making it look like things are ok. Did anyone stop to think that cutting the pay of hundreds of thousands of people would mean that they couldn’t put that money back into the economy? Did anyone stop to think that people who couldn’t make ends meet before the furlough would be forced to give up their homes or cars? I don’t think any of you thought about those things seriously enough. You want to know one of the reasons the economy in this state hasn’t recovered? Because a lot of us don’t have any money left over at the end of the month after taking care of basic necessities.

Perhaps I’m a little bitter because this month I’m forced to choose between paying utilities and buying groceries. But I know I’m probably not alone in that. What’s sad is that I have two college degrees and a job that under normal circumstances would be considered good and stable. But that’s not a comfort to me when my ulcer flares up or when I can’t sleep at night because I’m so stressed out. And when I see on the news that the state has spent $44 MILLION on new cars and trucks, $30 MILLION on new office furniture, and $2 MILLION on conference room rentals, I become enraged:

How can any of you charged with running this state look in the mirror each morning knowing what kind of wasteful spending is going on while citizens like me can barely take care of their families? How many of you have taken a 10 or 15% pay cut AND not received a raise because of budget cuts? Do you think it’s ok to take your daily stipend when you are getting paid a six-figure salary to begin with? Frankly, you all make me sick. So by all means, go enjoy a nice lunch paid for by taxpayers like me while I flip a coin to decide which bills to pay this month. And while you’re at lunch, choke on it.

I don't have to be a California resident to understand and feel the justifed outrage here . . . there are similar stories everywhere, and something's gotta give.
Government in California is broken. and it won't be fixed anytime soon. i'm truly sorry you have to go through this hell
and in relative terms, i have it "good." the kind of change we need in this state, and throughout the country, won't come soon enough.
i think in my state of denial I forgot all about the current list of candidates to take over this state. yep, we're pretty much screwed. i would have voted for Gavin in a heartbeat.
My sister works for UCSB and is in the same boat. I don't even want to think how much further downhill things can go...
Arnold has no clue of what being American is..... There it is, I said it like it or not. We as Americans (TRUE) have been taught early in age, what the constitution is and what it means. We were taught this early to have a devoted respect for our Founding Fathers. There are many things I can write about this man, as I have studied his short political career, his immoral past and his intentions for the future of California and let me tell you folks, it is scary. Please view the following link to understand what this man is all about, it is very interesting and it is an eye opener. http://www.arnoldexposed.com/about.htm

Let us not be naive, this man was a mediocre actor, what makes us believe he can run California? It is my understanding that Hollywood itself has ostracized Mr. Schwarzenegger. I am very surprised Mrs. Maria Shriver-Schwarzenegger has not had any influence on this man's agenda. State workers are the last of California's middle class, when he decided to furlough State workers, I lost all respect for him, because like State workers or not, they are there to serve us, the people of California and by cutting them off, he also back-slapped all of the people that make California what it is. I don't understand why he insists that this is helping the economy, my 14 year-old doesn't understand and has many questions about why all this is happening.

Lemonpulp: Hang in there, this guy is on his way out, let's just hope he doesn't do more damage.

I'm a furloughed California state worker -- the three furlough days a month result in almost $300 less in take-home pay for me each month. (But at least I don't have to work on the days that I'm not paid for; lemonpulp, you state that you took a 10-percent pay cut, but you don't have reduced work hours? If so, that sucks!)

Shwarzenegger won the 2003 gubernatorial recall election hugely because Enron, a subsidiary of the BushCheneyCorp, had screwed California over royally. (And recall that Schwarzenegger had had a secret meeting with Enron's Ken Lay before Enron screwed California over.) Schwarzenegger blamed the Enron swindle on then-Gov. Gray Davis. The state's economy also was faltering because of the BushCheneyCorp's economic "policy." This, too, Schwarzenegger blamed on Davis.

Ironically, were we to push Schwarzy against the wall and blame him for the state's economic mess -- the mess that he promised to clean up in 2003 but that now is even worse -- he probably would blame it on the national economy, even though he didn't extend that courtesy to Davis.

Gavin Newsom -- come on, guys, he's too green to be guv. ("Green" as in "wet behind the ears," not as in "enviro-friendly.") His time will come.

Jerry Brown is our best bet. He knows the job and he has the name recognition and the political connections. (Newsom, unfortunately, is known statewide pretty much only for his support of same-sex marriage.)

Anyway, at least one judge has ruled the furlough days for my state department (and many other state departments) to be illegal, and we might actually get reimbursed for the days we didn't work.

Ironic -- Schwarzy might go down in the state history books as the guv who stated he was going to save the state money by furloughing state workers but the state actually lost money by having to pay those workers for the days they missed because they were furloughed illegally...
