Musical Musings - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Rate: 6 Flag

Despite the fantastic nature of the subject, which might turn off many people, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was great television. The characters were complex, the stories were well written, and there was some great dialog. The musical episode, "Once More with Feeling," was one of the best episodes of the series. Some critics and fans complained that season six was too dark and depressing. Considering the events of season five, I think season six was exactly what it needed to be. The premise behind "Once More with Feeling" is that a charm has turned the town of Sunnydale into one big musical act. Everyone's true feelings are revealed in song, but there can be deadly consequences to these musical sequences. What I love about this episode is how creative it is. Joss Whedon wrote the music and all the actors did their own singing. And the songs aren't just placed in the show randomly; they advance the storyline and give us insight into the characters. It is one of the best musical episodes I have seen on television. There are certain songs in the episode that I'm drawn to because of the melody and lyrics, one of which I'm including below. There's something about a song with minor notes that makes me sit up and pay attention. I think those songs tend to convey more complex emotions and appeal to a darker side of my psyche than songs done in major keys. If you have never seen the show, consider at least watching this episode (if you have Netflix, it's available for streaming).

And I promise to do a post on something other than a musical next time:)

I'll admit it: I was a Buffy addict and I loved all of the music they used and found many cool bands I otherwise probably would never have heard of. :-)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is the first tv series to introduce us to Willow, the Lesbian-Dominatrix-vampire-witch, so yeah I'll give it credit for that LOL
Buffy = The Best TV Drama. Ever. When I heard they were going to do a musical episode I thought it would suck, but as you say here, it turned out to be one of the best episodes of the series.
pavanne - there was a lot of great music in that show!

p - willow did kind of defy all the usual supporting character traits. i liked when she went all evil on the world for a bit. i can understand her rage.

nanatehay - i was worried too when i first heard about it, but was so happy with the results. and i still watch it on reruns and dvd when the mood strikes me.
Total Buffy fan. The musical episode was way, way better than I expected. My favorite episode was the one where everyone in town was turned silent - I still getting the creeps by the creatures gliding silently down the street. It was better than any Twilight Zone episode.
cuss - how funny that you brought up the silent episode. I can't watch it! That post I wrote a week or so ago, called They Come at Night...that episode is a lot like the dream. The faces on those creatures, everything. Scared the shit out of me the one time i watched it!
I've never seen/heard this. I agree, minor notes add depth and mystery, and it's difficult to pull off that sort of thing and not have it come off as depressing (often how it's meant to be conveyed).

Wish I had more time... Thanks for the musical fun!!!
outside - oh, you're missing out on some good television. you can still catch reruns and netflix has the series on-demand. glad to add some fun to your day!
