The Chase

Rate: 18 Flag

I'm standing outside my parents house. I look down the street and wonder if that's the safest way to go. Turning, I look up the other side of the street. No, I can't go that way. They'd expect it. The school and the park are down there. I turn and start running down the street towards Rose Ave. I'm not sure why I'm running, but I feel that someone, something is coming for me and I have to go. Reaching the intersection, I have to decide which way to go. Do I go down Rose? Too much traffic. Too easy to see me. I keep going straight, running down Kruger as far as I can. Eventually I'll have to cut over if I'm going to get to the shopping center. Why am I going there? I don't know why, but I'm drawn to that place. Suddenly, I find myself running down Orangeburg towards Oakdale. I'm almost to the shopping center. I get to the signal and cross the street. Running, running, until I'm at the back side of the center. I sprint through the parking lot, past the Round Table, past the ice cream shop. I slow down as I approach Raley's. It's here. It found me. I have to find somewhere else to run, somewhere else to hide.

Going towards the intersection back towards home, I find myself sitting on a skateboard. I'm no longer running, but "driving," powering myself along the street on the skateboard with the rest of the cars zooming by. My palms and fingertips feel the heat of the asphalt as I grind my way down the street. I'm steering now, going fast enough to not scrape my hands raw, but not fast enough to outrun them. I dart down the first street I can off of Orangeburg, desperately searching for a house to hide in.

Running again, I'm sprinting through yards, hopping over fences. I know the people in some of these houses, but they aren't home to help. I stop briefly behind a hedge, trying to catch my breath. I see them turn the corner. They'll see me here. I run crouching until I reach the fence, then I jump over. Through another yard and I'm in front of a house that beckons me. I can hide here. This house will provide my escape. I run in, shutting all the open drapes, making sure the doors and windows are locked. I crawl along the floor, looking for a place to hide in case they find a way in.

I open the closet and crawl in. I feel safe, but not safe enough. Have I been here before? It feels like I've been in this place, in this closet. I'm always hiding in closets it seems, always escaping through closets. I hear the footsteps. Feeling my way along the walls and floor of the closet, I know there is an escape through here. I find the secret wall and quietly slide it open. Squeezing through into the tunnel, I close it behind me. They might not see it. I make my way through the tunnel to a door. Through the door and down the stairs. How do I know this place? At the bottom of the stairs, there's another door. I go through it and enter a cavernous room. There are several cars in this place. Is this garage mine? Is this my personal hideout?

I jump into one of the cars and start it. This is the best one to get away in. It's fast and apparently it flies. What did I watch last night? I zip out of the cavern and out onto a road. I'm driving down a road I don't recognize, but I feel as though I've been on it before. The houses are all expensive and well maintained. The setting is almost tropical. Where am I? Suddenly the car comes off the ground and I'm flying over the houses, looking for a place to hide. They could still find me. I have to get there at a certain time if I'm going to be safe. Looking down at the houses below me, I see palm trees and the ocean in the distance. There. That's the house. I drop down out of the sky and I'm driving along the road again. I pull into some secret garage and hide the car. I'm in the house. All the windows are covered and I feel as if I've escaped for now. I made it in time. They can't find me for at least a little while. I can rest. But somehow, I know I can't rest for long. They are coming. A large shadow passes by the windows. They are above. Searching. They can't find me right now. But they won't rest until they do. Somehow, I know there's  a closet to hide in, and in there is another escape, another secret room, another get away. Will I always be running? Will I always be hiding?

Totally returned me to a specific, harrowing, embarrassing day in elementary school. Thank you. Maybe. R.
This reads like a nightmare - one of the spookiest sounds in the world is chased feet. It's a very different sound that mere racing feet or running feet. It's the sound of desperation.

Your talent as a writer is clear, bringing me to the edge of my chair, catching my breath now and then. And hearing those chased feet. kp
Wow, some nightmare. I haven't had a chase dream in a long time, but they can be terrifying. Excellent job of describing the fear.
I feel like I always will be like that. Not much I can do..:(
Rated with hugs and similar dreams
Suspenseful and tight! I love the power of a chase scene. It's so primal and fear invoking.

Most people ignore the basic, animal quality of the chase. The stark terror of being prey for some unknown or larger predator.

It is this emotion which can evoke some of our greatest works, and you have harnessed it well.

Rated!
scanner - i wish:)

jonathan - um, sorry? i think the chase is something we can all relate to on some level.

kit - thanks:) glad i could make it feel real. the dream is still vivid in my mind, even though i haven't had it in years.
ladyslipper - thank you! yep, being chased can be terrifying. and the unknown of what or who is chasing you is worse sometimes.

linda - i think most of us feel like we will always be running or hiding from something. the question is always what?

doug - thanks! i always wake up agitated from these dreams. there is something primal about the chase, whether you are doing the chasing or being chased. i think my psyche is in overdrive right now...
Sometimes, I can turn the chase into a heroic stand . . . if I can remember to realize that I'm dreaming. But this is strongly reminiscent of dreams I've had off and on for years. Whenever it becomes recurrent, I try to prepare before bed to remind myself to turn and look at what's chasing me, to stand up to it, even if I die. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (I've died in dreams), but either way, it often offers some insight as to the nature of the pursuer.
I would think I was running from some one, hiding something. Strangely I know those roads which you run on!
What a great chase!
A suspense filled journey to a place I hope you've never been.
Lemonpulp; I'm there with you, scared as a scalded creature. Wonderful writing :)

owl - there are times when i take control of my dreams and confront those who are threatening me. i think in this particular dream, i'm probably running from some part of myself that i don't want to deal with.

ll2 - the chase is probably a dream that most of us share for one reason or another. don't you just love the way the human mind works?

daniel - i've only been there in my dreams many years ago. i suppose metaphorically, i've been there in real life. we probably all have been at some point. thanks for coming by!

joy - thanks for taking the ride with me:)
Good lord woman! have a shot of scoth before you go to sleep tonight! I had a recurring dream when I was a kid that a guy with a spear would jump off one of those posters they use to hang on the side of brick buildings and chase me till I woke up. I think it was my now husband.~R
*that would be scotch but of you prefer scoth by all means drink away. :-)
Amazing detail for such an eerie nightmare. I often forget mine, thank goodness - just the feelings that linger for a while. I hope this won't be a recurring one like some are wont to be. I have an elevator night mare that haunts me occasionally. ~R
tme - scotch or scoth...either would work:) and to think, this was a recurring dream that was amongst the less frightening of the things that came to me in my sleep!

fusuna - thanks. it used to be a reucurring dream but i haven't had it for years. i think you and i need to talk. i still have recurring nightmares about elevators and roller coasters. i won't step foot in an elevator if i can avoid it.
Well, that was a very vivid and very specific dream. Unnerving. I've had the opposite dreams, where I'm trapped somewhere and can't get out.
Wow! You are good at this, lemon. When you suddenly started flying, I kinda knew it was a dream, but it got much scarier. My "stressmares" are usually about me not being able to find my way out of places, like huge office buildings. Hmmm. I wonder why that is. Couldn't be 25 years of navigating a corporation. Nah.
Lezlie
Buffy seems to have this dream, she whimpers and cries out in her sleep. Either that or she's the one doing the chasing. Good writing!

Jim K
Wow. You had me from the second sentence. I knew it was a dream early on but, like so many of my dreams, I couldn't turn away. I think, though, that I like yours more than mine. May I borrow it sometime? I promise to bring it back in good condition! ;o)
Rated. D
Compelling and vivid writing. I could hear your heartbeat in my ears and the sound of your labored breath. I think we are all running either towards or away.
Wow.

I've had some dreams pretty close, woke up, wondering, "What the hell?"

Strange indeed!!! Rated.
cranky - some of my dreams are etched in my memory because they were either very vivid or because i've had them so many times. looking back on it now, it says so many things i think.

lezlie - thanks:) i haven't experienced that particular dream yet, but i think i spend a lot of time not being able to find my way out of my own psyche!

jim - i bet buffy is chasing squirrels or cats in her dreams:) our dog often barks in her sleep and it's fun to watch those legs "run" as she sleeps on her bed.
yarn over - thanks! borrow it anytime you want:) in fact, if you want to make improvements, feel free!

zul - thank you. most of my dreams have involved me running away from something. a psychoanalyst would love me.

tink - great to see you! well, great minds do dream alike i think. when i used to watched buffy the vampire slayer each week, i often had dreams that i was killing vampires and saving the world. i kinda liked those...
Beautiful work, lemon!
I have a dream landscape which would allow for certain areas or buildings, and so forth to remanifest whenever my psyche needs to use them for its own purposes.

Wow - my heart was racing all the way through! Dream analysis? Well, stab in the dark: you are running from your fear(s) - stop trying to escape, turn and face them, and they will stop chasing you...
Well done. Riveting from beginning to end. R-
Lemon, you do scary too well. You always manage to make me look around suspiciously or check the locks on my doors.
