Musical Musings - Xanadu

Rate: 23 Flag

There's at least one other person out there who is secretly giddy that they have found someone else who loves Xanadu. I have been mocked for years for loving the music in this movie. I've even been mocked for liking the movie itself. Yes, Xanadu is probably the cheesiest movie in existence, but it puts a smile on my face. I'm not sure if my love of this movie comes from my love of Olivia Newton-John or the fact that as a kid something about this movie spoke to me. Was it the muses coming out of the wall, rollerskating all over the place and inspiring artists? Was it the rebel muse refusing to go back home? I honestly don't know. Whenever the movie came on, you could bet that I was in front of the TV watching it. When we got a VCR, I recorded it so I could watch it at any time. After CDs became the popular choice for music media, I searched and searched for this soundtrack. I even tried to special order it, but nobody could get it for me. I think it was 10 years before I finally found a copy at a Virgin Megastore in San Francisco. I actually jumped up and down in the aisle when I saw it! I ran through the place (all three levels) looking for my entire family to show them that I had finally found my Holy Grail of pop music. And I was proably in my late teens or early twenties when this happened. Finding that soundtrack made my year. Then came the advent of the DVD. You know where I'm going with this right? More searching, more waiting, and finally the movie was released on DVD. And I had it in my hot little hands days later. It is a feel-good movie with a romance. You even get a little parental interference and think that maybe things won't work out in the end. You have songs that play with different genres. A little rock mixed with some swing. And Gene Kelly! I love his character in this movie and his chemistry with Olivia is great. Yes, I'm gushing about a movie that's plot revolves around the dream of one guy to open a rollerskate dance club. So, lace up those skates, turn up the volume, and take a lap or two with me as I enjoy some of the music of my youth. I bet you can't listen to this song or watch the video without smiling.

Post inspired in part by  Cranky Cuss's earworm post. Here's hoping this gets stuck in your head for at least a little while:)

Ha! you did make me laugh:) so, does your hell come with rollerskates?
LOL
I find these Xanadu cds once in awhile and they go for pennies..
except to someone that loves it as much as you do.
Now I know someone..:)
Rated with hugs and the song isn't that bad..movie..huh..well..
:)
It's already stuck, haven't even clicked on it. I won't...I won't...I won't..
How early 80's is this????
Yikes!!!
Guess I'd better get with it and play some lesser known good quality Rock!
*running to hide*
Rated for making me chuckle--if nervously
I did. Oh god, what were they wearing?!?!?!? :)
You're right..I am smiling. The problem is I have yet to figure out why! Were you smoking anything back then that enchanced the visuals at the end? Wait...were you smoking anything when you watched the entire thing for the first time? :-)
Why doesn't their hair move when they dance?
tee hee! i'm so glad i could amuse so many today:)

linda - yes, there are few like me who would actually pay more than pennies for this soundtrack. maybe i should start a support group...

sweetfeet - i listened to the entire album while i worked on this. it is now firmly stuck in my head. glad you clicked. i can't say much for the fashion then.

pw - it was 1980 so it still had a bit of the 70s influence. a nervous chuckle is ok:) i know you'll be back throughout the day to play this....
tme - i probably shouldn't admit this, but my age wasn't even in the double digits when i saw this the first time. maybe that's why i liked it so much...i didn't know better! but even at my current age, i do enjoy the music. those visuals at the end are kind of a trip...

greenheron - my guess is a LOT of hairspray. it was the 80s so helmet hair was in.
by the way, this isn't nearly as bad as the Pat Boone stuff I posted a few months ago. now that was some scary stuff!
Xanadu your neon lights will shine!
I love that Gene Kelly duet also. I know ALL THE WORDS!
Never saw it (was in high school and wasn't allowed out much) but I remember I liked this song on the radio. Besides, it would be very unfair of me to mock you since... drum roll please... I had posters of Donny Osmond all over my bedroom wall! Yikes!
Somebody pass the crackers! I'm smothered in cheese.
Lezlie
ghostwriter - another kindred spirit? woo hoo!

pavanne - we all have our "skeletons" in the closet, don't we? :)

lezlie - Ha! would that be cheez whiz?
Fun. Actually brings back memories, jeez I am OLD. R
OK, what's next? Grease, Cats, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? OK, I like the song, and ONJ. R-
mark - we'll agree to disagree on the talent of ONJ:) but yes, she is adorable. i had forgotten about that hat...

sheila - you aren't old, you are well-lived! and i have a lot of memories of watching this, so i guess i'm "well-lived" also:)

dave - hmmm. you just gave me some ideas for future weeks:) you think this is bad? check out my Auditory Torture post!
Ugh!!! *shudders*
Pat Boone!
I feel like a cat that's had its back fur area petted in the wrong direction--and then left that way!
(EW!!)
There was one by ONJ that I couldn't get out of my head, but I can't remember it now. Old age or redemption - either way, thank God ! R
pw - yeah, the pat boone left me a little bit scarred. but somehow i can't turn away from it...

perhaps a little nip of something would take the edge off:)
fusuna - probably better to not have earworms if you can avoid them. but i'd rather have ONJ stuck in my head than some of the crap i'm subjected to by the kids...blech!
Our family is a fan of this cheesy stuff too!

Buffy
Lemonpulp, I'm with you - I like it. I also seem to be the only person on the planet who owned an ABBA album - before the movie/play. Go figure. Being a classic rock junkie it is unusual for me, but I'll own it; Xanadu is fun!
r~
Shyly stands up in the meeting and says, "I too am a Xanadu fan"...

P.S. and even I think Gene Kelly was HAWT!
buffy - glad to know your family has such good taste! do you bark along with the music?
joy - i LOVE abba! i've been listening to them for as long as i can remember and long before the musical. my friends and i had a routine for Dancing Queen:)

and xanadu is a lot of fun!
amy - welcome to the group! i think that makes four or five of us:) and yes, gene kelly still had that special something, even back then.
I just finished watching the video for the fourth time... all I can say about those chicks dancing in the background is DAMN!!!
Cheesy? Absolutely. The script was pretty weak.

Was the movie fun? Totally. I loved the mix of music styles.

Oh, and my cousin Shawna was one of the skaters. R
amy - you are too funny! i suspect i'll have visions of olivia newt0n-john in my head as i go to sleep tonight:) i'm glad there's at least one other person watching this more than once!
natalie - yea! another fan! cool that your cousin was one of the skaters. does she have some good stories about filming?
I can totally see GLEE taking this on. Great piece!
Really, Xanadu must be watched as a triple feature with the Bee Gees "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band" and Donnie and Marie Osmond's "Goin' Coconut" and you must watch it while wearing skates and eating fried cheese. Have plenty of tissues on hand. These are tearjerkers.
lschmoopie - that's the best idea i've heard today! i can definitely see that!
bellweather - it's as if you can read my mind! Sgt. Pepper is another of my cheesy favorites and is already on the list for my weekly music post! i'll take your word for it on the osmond movie:)
I can literally feel my soul being ripped in half by the demons of my past.

You used to love it....You hate it....but you want to like it...no hate it!

DAMN YOU FOR DOING THIS TO ME!!!!!
doug - you're welcome:) embrace the demons and sing along. you know you want to. all the other kids are doing it...
Yes, my cousin has good memories of filming. It was fun for her. She said Olivia was tiny, but so was my cousin. Size -13 or something like that, I'm sure! :-)
Oh, you're blaming ME for this. Thanks.
I feel like Mr. Bill on SNL: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I jumped up and down like that when I found the only remaining copy in the world of The Black Cloud by Fred Hoyle, which was the first science fiction book I ever read and which still haunts me. I never saw Xanadu, but I remember the song, which didn't make any sense to me, but I like the harmonics.
Cranky is always starting something!
