White Mens' Murders Aren't Terror—They're Patriotism

Rate: 23 Flag

Indeed, it's not just the Kansas and DC shootings. Richard Poplawski, a right-wing extremist and white guy, allegedly gunned down three police officers in Pittsburgh in April, in part because he feared the non-existent "Obama gun ban." Jim David Adkisson, a right-wing extremist and white guy, allegedly opened fire in a Unitarian church in Tennessee last year, in part because of his "hatred of the liberal movement."

      -Steve Benen

When it comes to irrevocable inclusion in the “American” family, white skin  counts.  An anti-abortion terrorist walks into a medical clinic and shoots a doctor dead.  His political agenda is clear—to terrorize and silence the pro-choice movement and doctors who tend to women’s medical needs.  Immediately, a media debate grows on the procedure he performed—tacitly suggesting that the doctor might have deserved to be murdered.  His murderer was white.

Randall Terry of Operation Rescue, a “legitimate” voice for the anti-abortion movement, friend and contributor to countless politicians, schedules a press coference to “make the case that ‘Tiller's death and office closing can help propel pro-life movement, derail Sotomayor and overturn Roe.’  A muslim organization suggesting this level of support for a terrorist would have its bank accounts impounded and its members on a FBI watch list.  But Terry is a white American.  He is allowed to advocate and benefit from murder and terror as a political tools.  He remains respectable member of the American political community.

Two sets of slow, mentally deficient black men are goaded by an FBI agent into fantasizing terror attacks—one set in Miami (some finally convicted after two mistrials) and one in New York—and they are marched before TV cameras like Osama bin Ladens and promoted as the biggest catch since Abu Zubaydah.  These men killed no one and harmed nothing. They were black.  There was no debate on the merits of their grievances.

An old neo-Nazi walks into the Holocaust Museum and starts shooting.  He kills a guard.  His political agenda is clear—to terrorize and silence minority voices.  However, he is not called a “terrorist.”  In fact, Good Morning America hosted another neo-Nazi to explain the murderer’s motivations.

Imagine having another Arab terrorist on the program to explain shoe bomber Richard Reid’s motivations.  The Nazi is white.  “Terrorists” are brown.  As white, these murderers are considered by the media and those in power to be intrinsic to the American fabric.  They are American to the core—American in a special way that only white skin can make you.  It means that no matter how heinous their crimes, they remain one of “us.”  They cannot be placed outside the human family via the word “terrorist.”

The majoritiy of Americans were perfectly thrilled to kill tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis for no good reason—other than they were brown and Muslim and we hate them.  We are perfectly happy to continue dropping bombs on innocent Afghans even though doing so only teaches them to hate us while undermining our strategic goals in the area.  We have no problem treating brown people—particularly Muslims—as subhuman and disposable.  We have no trouble dubbing them “Terrorists.”

But there’s more to it than just color.  We are happy to scream “environmental terrorism.”  We still talk of 60s era “terrorists” (remember William Ayers).  These folks are ethnically white as well, so what else is going on?

It’s simple:  the environmental bombers and William Ayers attacked traditional symbols of white male authority—corporations… the military.  Our recent murderers are seen as protecting those traditional symbols of authority: traditional values—a woman’s defenselessness against the whims of a man’s penis and the primacy and white male privilege.  Thus, let’s look at the word “white” in its broadest sense—as evoking traditional American power structures.

When the DHS released a report warning of an upsurge of extreme right terror, the wingers grew hysterical.  How dare anyone suggest that their ilk could be terrorists.  When they kill, it’s for AMERICA.  It’s an act of patriotism, not terrorism; they’re protecting what’s fundamentally American and so their murders should be treated with respect.

The media plays along.  In Slate, the regularly ridiculous yet continually published William Saletan wrote: “Is it wrong to defend the life of an unborn child as you would defend the life of a born child? Because that's the question this murder poses.”

He is justifying murder.  He equates something that sits inside someone else’s body with something that lives independently.  Whether that thing “could” live independently is pure obfuscation.  A cell can live in a petrie dish.   The whole point is the omission and dehumanization of the person carrying the fetus—the woman.  The whole debate centers on the debasement of living, breathing women.  Thus, we can openly debate whether murder in furtherance of such debasement is justified.

Women, Muslims, Afro-Americans, Jews.  Murder them and you are justified.  Why?  Well, perhaps your rights as a white man have been trod upon.  Perhaps you’re only reacting to societal changes.  After all, you have a right to be murderously mad.  Hannity, Beck, O’Reilly and Malkin all say so.   In any case, that you are protecting something fundamentally American will be sensed deep in the media marrow.   Those in power will pity you and call you “disturbed.”  But they will not call you terrorist.  They will not revile you, extraordinarily render you, torture you or throw you in a dungeon.

After all, you’re white, with all the good things that implies.

You are a brave man. The trolls are out in force, today, desperately trying to justify themselves as well as the acts of a murderous creep.

You spoke well for those of us who see the situation without the rose colored, 3-D, and distorted lenses that extremists have permanently implanted.

Word for word. There is more about the treasonous murderer than about the hero who saved so many lives while sacrificing his own. I wonder what I would be reading and hearing if that guard had been White.
I agree with Zuma, you are a brave man. Your deconstruction of the media response to these two events is one that I haven't read elsewhere and that needed to be said, again and again. Rated. Reddited.
Leonce! First off, we are so thrilled to see you back at OS. Before joining, you were the one columnist whose articles we read the most of, savoring each of your sociopolitically astute contributions. You were among the first people we favorited when we finally joined OS a few weeks ago. We missed your posts immensely when you took a break these past few months, but we were delighted to see you had a new piece and to have the pleasure to finally rate and comment on your work.

Now, onto the specifics of this article. We were immediately reminded of a video posted by some mentally unhinged older “gentleman” dressed in a white doctor’s coat we watched a couple of days ago. We wanted to link to it (“Dr. Tiller, You Reaped What You Sowed”), but when we went to YouTube, we discovered the video had been removed. This is unfortunate, because it was such a telling encapsulation of the propaganda being perpetuated by the White Makes Rightists. He used one term that was particularly memorable: “excusable homicide.” This was a blood-curdling, unabashed tirade that boiled down to the message that Tiller got what he deserved, with ominous overtones suggesting that other doctors practicing this procedure better just beware. Scary stuff—and you’re absolutely right, if this had been spewed by someone other than a white-haired white guy in a white lab coat, he would’ve been shipped off for extraordinary rendition.

The topic of abortion always makes me think of something Michael said a few years back. This is nowhere near as elegant as he originally said it, but you get the idea: “If men could get pregnant, abortion wouldn’t even be an issue.” So whether it’s race or gender or sexuality or any/all of the above, our so-called progressive society is still overtly driven by a racist, patriarchal hegemony, contrary to the politically correct pretense of equality and social justice. If you are able to swap a different color or gender into a particular debate with totally contrary outcomes, we still have substantial progress to make in this sad country.

We’re grateful for voices like yours, Leonce, who courageously speak the truth, despite the risk of offending. Keep up the good works.

—Melissa
Thank you for saying this. Yes, you are brave to admit this reality with all of the trolls draped in American flags who would feel it's their right to dispose of anyone who feels differently from they. The way the media has portrayed these events is sickening - which is a sad thing to say about what is in all essence our mainstream culture. Rated with gratitude.
Excellent. By the way, the numbers of Iraqis who have died because of the US's 2003 invasion and occupation exceeds 1.2 million.
Sadly, I have to agree with you. Most still don't call Timothy McVeigh a "terrorist," either, rather a bomber. Superb read.
Lance, Thank you for posting this. You have allies here at OS. Some of us have been referring to the man who killed Dr. Tiller as a terrorist since the event happened; we have also see the Holocaust museum murder as terrorism.
I find myself wondering if a Muslim news broadcaster was constantly inciting terrorism, as Bill O'Reilly did in the Tiller assassination, if he wouldn't find himself in jail and accused of being a co-conspirator.
Randall Terry, (the former used-car salesman as he is known in these parts), continues to rant that if Sotomayor is confirmed, blood will be spilled. What do we call that?
As a pro-choice woman who has daughters, as someone who continues to speak out, I feel threatened by what is going on out there.
Thank you for saying again what many of us are feeling, thinking, saying ourselves. I welcome your voice.
You are completely right. We are just copping to the fact that we have an American Taliban, scarcely less evil than the men throwing acid in little girls' faces to keep them from school. Soon, packs of these zealots will be patrolling our city streets, enforcing 'Biblical law' (as compared to Sharia law), harassing, injuring and even killing law-abiding citizens. This is just the vanguard. If we don't put these hate-mongerers in their place soon, we will have Afghanistan and Iranian-style religious shadow courts running the country.
i think you make a powerful point.

but i also thought it was interesting to watch the good morning america clip. they're right about the risks of ignoring these fringe groups, as they mention near the end. i don't think it was their intent to legitimize terror, and i think with local terror, the most powerful deterrent is shedding daylight on these groups that benefit from operating in darkness.

and juxtaposing that clip against saletan makes saletan look as crazy as the neo-nazi. that's very effective.
Bravo! You have destroyed the strawman in short order.
I find the notion that the media is "tacitly" suggesting Dr. Tiller got his just desserts ludcicrous. I would agree his killer is a terrorist.
As for the "old Neo-Nazi"; your assertion "his motivation is clear" is an untruth stated as fact. You have no idea what his motivation was unless you are privy to information from the beyond.
The notion that because a network invites someone on sympathetic to the views of a deranged individual or group is common place. Witness the multitude of talking heads invited on after any tragedy that takes place.
They (meaning their sympathizers) are placed front and center on stage. Whether it be the religous right after an abortion doctor is killed or a clinic bombed or a muslim cleric when a plot to attack an army base is thwarted.
And yes...even a Neo-Nazi when one of their own crosses the line of sanity and resorts to mindless violence. There seems to be no shortage of those willing to defend the indefensable and claim their fifteen minutes.
In my mind they are all culpable and should be held to account but while they decry the violence on one hand they ask us to understand it on the other.
What I find most offensive in your piece was your declaration that the "majority of Americans were thirlled........to kill because they were muslims, brown, and we hated them".
I think the majority of americans would disagree with that assesment. Though certainly no fan of the war, I would like to think our decision to invade another country was based on more than skin color or religion...my interpretation would give favor to imperialism.
By defining "white in it's broadest sense" you give yourself license to attack any and all. After all, it is the "white man" who runs the country isn't it?
I would have to give you and A for hyperbole a D for logic and and F for veracity.
