Buying into Words

Rate: 27 Flag

I'm into words. I look up words on a daily basis. I want to revisit the definition of words I use regularly.

I think about words more than sex. I love and long for words and their impact. The words do not have to be pleasant words like the word, love or luscious. I will gladly take a word that is not melodious or evokes warm feelings.

Words can define anything or anyone but I prefer not to be pinned down to words. I want to swim fluidly through words and not get hung up on pop or buzz words. I do not want to snag my bathing suit on a sharp word.

I want to learn not to take words to heart but be able to weigh my own words. Sometimes, in my passion, words come gushing forth unchecked from my lips. In retrospect, I often wish I could have quickly crammed those words back into any orifice I possess and is readily available.

All the same, there are words I would like to cram up a particular orifice of whoever coined those words. I am not the only person who likes to latch onto words. We have popular words and phrases we buy into and then hang whole pop philosophies, hopes and beliefs on only to be disappointed.

Here, below are some words and phrases that make me lose control and I wonder how much money was generated in the popularizing, marketing and selling of these words. These are words and phrases that I would like to hunt the coiners of, down and do some  serious word proctology on their asses.

Closure - Oh really? Does everything have to be wrapped in a neat little package? Some things are better left open ended with no constraints. Life is not like a 90 minute movie with a happy ending.

The power of positive thinking - How about just the power of thinking? Who is to say what is positive and what is negative? Most fully functioning humans have a whole range of thinking that is valid for the particular circumstance. Some things in life do not have an upbeat spin no matter how you look at the situation.

Move on - This phrase is dismissive. A person who tells you to move on is the person who wants you to quit your bellyaching. Next time, this person complains about some shattering event or hurt, tell them to move on and see how the shoe fits on the other foot.

Life Challenges - This is a euphemism for being in really sucky situations, some of which may be self-created or on the other hand, beyond your control.

Toxic people - At sometime, we may all be toxic unless we are buddha, jesus, the dalai lama or some other walk on water person. Some people do have more of a propensity to be chronically venomous than others but I am not a toxicologist to judge. Maybe the chemistry between two people produces a toxicity that would not be there otherwise.

Simple Living - Maybe this is an oxymoron. The only people who can enjoy simple living have money. For those of us who are struggling to make ends meet, life is not that simple.

Balanced - Yeah, right. When has life ever been balanced? If other people are achieving a balance, I want to meet them and spend a few weeks living with them and their balanced life. I'm ready to take notes.

Multi-tasking - I can't believe we are still using this buzz word. By now we should all know that the true definition of this word is, how much work can management get from an employee while paying the least amount in salary and benefits.

Certainly this list of buzz word and phrases is just a start. I bet you have your own buzz words that peeve you. What would you add to this list with your own insights? Or maybe some of you are thinking I'm just being cynical and jaded.

By now, you might think, "She is negative and one of those toxic people that doesn't employ the power of positive thinking. Obviously, if she moved on and brought some life challenges to closure by multi-tasking, she could achieve a balanced life and make the money for simple living."

I think we should stick to one syl a ble words with no hy phens. Love. Job. Eat. Sleep... Yup.
Thinking outside the box.
Awesome.
Words are definitly mightier than the sword when it comes to our souls.
I like how you think....yes I checked to make sure that one was A- OK! :)
Congrats on the EP!!!
I love words too. It used to be that by noticing a song running through my mind , I'd know more about my current mental state. Lately, it's words. One day two weeks ago: Lapsarium sp? was just drilling into my mind so relentlessly that I had to look it up. It means something like: Just before a fall from grace. This helped me prepare. As for words I've had it with, that will have to be done later. Rated ps: I see your are another early Pisces. We all tend to love language.
words more than sex?

girl...get a life...hey..I don't have a life...maybe if I thought about words more? naaawwwwwwww...
There are definitely plenty of well meaning but empty words or phrases that have wormed their way into our lexicon. To your point about contemplating words, my own and those of others - I do it all the time. I do a lot of writing, both personally and professionally, and the power of a well placed word or phrase used in the perfect context brings great satisfaction in the writing and the reading. And the clunkers are a real bummer.

Bravo on the EP and great new picture Mary!
Damn straight Leonde! Brava!

And congratulations on the EP.
I agree with you. As much as I dislike the buzzwords of our time, I wish like hell that I could have a balanced, simple life and put some closure on some issues! _r
I currently hate "going forward" and "inflection point" (meaning, I think, turning point). I'm especially interested in the way words lack innocence. They transport a cargo of connotations that suggest structures of thinking and feeling, that establish boundaries of normalcy. Consider, for instance, what the following say about life in the United States: sexual orientation, wellness program, alternative personal lifestyle, I need space, fast food (no linger food, evidently), sensitivity training, gated community, and faith tradition.
I love you for this article!!!!! I was called toxic by my former employer. I do not have challenges I have disasters. I refuse to move on like a rubber necker at a traffic accident. Multi-tasking is killing us all. And as far as closure.... I love the quote from the John Goodman character on Treme in last week's episode where he talks about how there really are no endings in life.... just transition. I cannot stand words being misused. I could add to your list...
H A T E the mutitasking word, which is just another way of saying that you're engaged in several things at once and doing all of them badly. If it's worth doing, it's worth your attention. I know I'm not a good match for any job that includes that as a requirement for the position.

I a$pire to $imple living so I can leave all the toxic stuff other side of the door. I need closure and I think $imple living will give me that balanced life everyone keeps talking about. (ha!)
Loving words more than sex! I can relate. I don't love word more than sex, but maybe I love cobalt violet more than sex. Just a little.

Thank you for calling out the toxic people phrase. Flawed people is one I like better, since we are all that, and it helps me see my connection to my fellow flawed.
I hate: "it is what it is." What else would it be?
Congrats Leonde, now lets move on, I hate the word networking, gah.How about " god doesn't give you more than you can carry" Yuck. Yeah, load it on. All those platitudes. I also hate "sorry my bad" what does that even mean?
The word LIKE, it's like so overused it like makes me want to like vomit. Smart, clever and enjoyable,
r_
I really dislike the word "closure" also. My mom died 38 years ago and I still don't quite have "closure." Great post!
Oh my God, yes, can we please kill, "Thinking outside the box?" It's always used by those who never do, in fact, think "outside the box."
Oh! This sets my teeth on edge - "...try AND" accomplish whatever.
It is "try TO" accomplish whatever. Try it or do it but please do not put those two words together because it drives me mad, mad. MAD, I tell you!
This post is "Spot On". Ugh, I get the willies just typing that phrase du jour.... When people say it, I want to gag...

Remember when "New York Minute" was the phrase du jour...UUGGHH!!
agreed on closure, especially... :)
You know, there are people who embody these phrases/principles effortlessly. They are rare, remarkable and inspiring. The ironic thing is that those who TRY to acheive them are all assholes. I try hard not to be an asshole, and succeed most days.
Totally. Like, totally.
Great post but "I think about words more than sex."

That is so wrong.
these are the illusions we chase, thinking that others have it. some may pretend they have it together, but having met a few it didn't take long to see the cracks. i had a notebook ready. still blank.
Popular books on business seem to contribute more than their share of jargon and meaningless concepts.

Good post.
Funny thing: when Jacob was a tiny, tiny baby, if we said the word "multi-task" he would laugh and laugh. He just liked the way it sounded. I have no idea how it started; it's not a word either of us particularly use. But I guess it was good for something!
Anyone else notice the instant proliferation of uber? Now I am beginning to hate that word. Though we need something to replace surreal, what might that be?
"I was like hating on him and then he was like, Quit your jealousing. So I was like . . ." That is an adult woman speaking into her cell phone.
I believe there is nothing wrong with loving words more than sex. I have always loved words more than sex. Perhaps it has something to do with being a writer.
(I almost said "goes with the territory" there. Close call.)
"Maybe the chemistry between two people produces a toxicity that would not be there otherwise"

Yes. Emphatically yes. I dislike the term "toxic people" and usually say "toxic situation" or "toxic behaviors" if I am even going to use that word to begin with.
"We're growing our business" drives me nuts.
As does everything you pointed out above. Sarah and I once had an antidote to living simply: complicated poverty. It would be a great magazine.
Maybe I'll start it as a, y'know, like, webzine or something.
As a married woman with a hot husband, I don't need to think about sex. It's there, like air. Words are toys. That said, I do prefer "life challenges" to "sucky situations" -- the name lc implies it's going to end sometime, but ss's feel permanent.
You are so on the money with this, you should be a millionaire. Then you could lead that simple life they are talking about. Great post!
You picked some of my favorite non-favorite words. Couldn't agree more.
A good reminder on how we humans can be unconscious with our words.
