Insufferable Hype & Egotism: BOTH Lincoln’s & MLK’s Bibles?

Rate: 10 Flag

I know what Lincoln and MLK will be doing on Obama’s inauguration day.

Rolling over in their graves.

I’ll once again be fighting the urge to vomit.

Obama’s cynicism, hypocrisy and egotism really are insufferable. One bible isn’t enough for the “wonder boy” -- and he is a boy in all his arrested emotional development.

He has to have both Lincoln’s and MLK’s bibles?

Methinks thou art selling thyself too pathetically and shamelessly hard, Barack!

I am choosing to avoid seeing that smile of “duper’s delight” as Obama pulls off his latest impression management razzle dazzle inauguration day.

Also insufferable, the propagandizing of his cabal of operatives and the MSNBC crowd of sycophants encouraging very successfully so many citizens to deepen their “team Dem/America exceptionalism” addiction and continue to ignore a reality becoming more and more persistent and painful.

Last year’s “lesser evilism” is the new “heroism”?  Pullleeeeze!

Remember Gore Vidal’s labeling of this country as “the United States of Amnesia”?

Can I mention here that our government, and the oligarchical ruling class elite that it is pimped out to, are exceptionally violent and oppressive.  Evil.

It is hard for a human being to fully grasp large-scale and threatening evil.  Short-term denial is preferable and easier.  As is going after the messengers of truth and reality.  Especially when Obama is so shameless and opportunistic a self-promoter and liar, helped mightily by corporate financial sponsorship and its media’s 24/7 propaganda.

The American Judas, the pied piping Democratic president on the garden path to fascism, will place his not-so-lesser-evil hand on BOTH Lincoln’s and MLK’s bibles to take another supposedly sacred oath to protect and guide us.

God help us all.

Martin Luther King’s utterances during his lifetime were powerful.  One that resonates with me this day: “... for the sake of hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent ...”

Thank God he wasn’t silent.  We need more Americans not to be silent about evil and its bullshit and its horrors.

Obama, a purveyor of great violence.  A purveyor of great poverty.  A disdainer of the plight of the poor, the sick, the elderly ... pretty much anyone not a one-percenter.

Obama is a bigger militarist than George W. Bush.

He ignores constitutional law.

He commits and directs crimes against humanity, such as murder of Americans.  Mass murder of non-Americans.

He allies with oppressive nations and enables their crimes against humanity.

He targets dissenters.

He enables the theft and fraud and obscene profiteering of the corporate elite at the expense of American citizens and foreign peoples, dooming them to poverty, hunger, sickness, ongoing unemployment, death, etc.

He is about to slash further America’s social safety net, including social security, Medicare and Medicaid.  Duped and enthralled citizens will proclaim he is doing his best to save such programs.  He will agree and boast of it.  He will lie and do harm.

Our government is run by a criminal class.  Democratic and Republican.

After Obama was elected in 2008 I observed that not only was Obama beginning to lose balance on the slippery slope of fascism, he apparently had brought his sled.

Amazing and heart-breaking how many citizens still don’t get it.

Lincoln, MLK .... and Obama?  What colossal hubris.

The audacity of mendacity!

Ah Libby, you poor soul. Have you not yet learned that politicians are not elected to represent "the people"? They're elected to represent "the system".

And the system was completely taken over by big money interests the instant the Fed was created, although it had been heavily influenced by those same interests before attaining that coup.

The goose is cooked. There ain't no un-cookin' it now. The Emperor stands naked before us while everyone ooohs and aaahs over his new clothes.

Rated for a great rant though.......Sky

Libby, you are way over the line here. Your posts about Barack Obama have become senseless rants...a lesson in how ineffective hyperbole is to make a point.

I hope whatever in your personal life motivates you to write this stuff finally clears up...so you can get back to reality in your political perspective.

I know it's wasted effort, but as Libby points out, electing the lesser of two weasels doesn't make him a Unicorn. He's still a narcissistic tyrannical weasel. Libby and I can find things to differ on in our opinions, but we both agree that operating a private murder list is a high crime. If you can't see that, nothing else needs to be said.

I think that, as usual, far left and far right people of conscience have more in common with each other than any of the Creatures of Borg Power parties. If frank gets on your nerves, delete him, he's always been more interested in stroking himself than in serious discussion.

ps- would like to solicit your thoughts:

Brilliant post, Libby. I totally share your sentiments about our democracy disintegrating into a smoke and mirrors reality TV show. It's one thing to to deceive people because you want them to vote for you. Totally another to deceive them because you're about to f*** them up the ass.

I agree with Herr Rudophus here. Liberals and progressives need to start listening very closely to conservatives and vice a versa. This whole control number is a ruse to keep progressives and tea partiers at each others throats. Obama clearly has an ulterior agenda in pushing it now. Despite all the recent media hype, studies show that mass shootings are significantly down since the 80s and 90s.
What I meant to say is this whole gun control number is a ruse.
Nice. I'm still trying to figure out how much money Rahm made on the whole Obamacare swindle.
Bramhall: "Obama clearly has an ulterior agenda in pushing it (gun control) now. " Uh - a whole bunch of elementary school kids shot to bloody tatters? Any president who didn't move after that is unspeakable. (Expecting Congress to be unspeakable.)
you can buy a self-test sphygmanometer, chinese made, quite cheaply. i use one after my daily jog, to re-assure myself that heart still functions.

for you, i recommend a test before and after a rant. you might have to ration yourself...
You're right, Myriad.

If Obama would have been involved he would have destroyed the whole school with a drone strike... then water boarded any survivors.
After this i will be rolling over in my grave too,if I were dead. Maybe I am...who knows?

Anyone who grabs power beyond that granted by law most assuredly is an egoist or worse. Regardless of whether our system of government is working as intended or not, the president of this country is limited in his powers. (There's a reason some of our founding fathers wanted to ban political parties and we see it today.) But, rules and laws don't stop our modern day kings. They simply issue unconstitutional executive orders by the hundreds. Essentially edicts of the king. Often these edicts serve the king as well. Torture, rendition, killing and other secret government shenanigans.

If our founders had wished presidents to make up laws as time went by to cover their asses and impose their personal will on society, these powers that subvert our system of checks and balances would have been granted. They aren't.
Libby, I have to agree with Frank Apisa! Your rants are way out there. I rant too, but I don't delete other peoples comments.
Sky, agree, re the system or the matrix. A corrupt and mafia-like matrix. The "banksters" certainly deserve that label. Look at what the international banking system is doing to the entire world. Money hunger makes WAR. best, libby
Rudy, nice to see you. I have been away traveling and visiting family which was lovely and now back wrestling with cold/flu. Sorry to be away from the site so much. I will check on your blog and get to some others soon I hope.

Re Frank, I told him privately I DO NOT WANT HIM TO COMMENT any more on my blogs. He has jumped the shark with me. I am burned out hearing a pompous patronizing analysis of myself as a person EVERY COMMENT so he can distract from the real issues and reality of what Obama is doing. Blog after blog. I did my Frank time. Now I need a break. If he argued about what Obama is doing with specifics but he can't refute the reality so he fights dirty.

I consider it "gaslighting". I find it diabolical as well as insulting. And it is a familiar m.o. Discredit and discount the messenger as a human being to distract from the message.

Brad Manning has emotional issues (as do we all, including Frank) but Manning's whistleblowing highlighted some horrifying war crimes. Instead, Manning is demonized by administration and media matrix not only for leaking the war crimes but for being emotionally unstable. Even after enduring torture he was written up for being emotionally unstable during that very time of being tortured. WTF? What kind of horrifying sadistic system tortures someone (even creeeeeepy sexual torture -- making him surrender his clothes and be naked for sustained periods and stand at attention before people, etc.) and then worsen his conditions because he is dangerous even to himself apparently for reacting inappropriately (when that was such bullshit but part of the cruelty).

Anyway, I told Frank privately I do not want him commenting on my blogs any more. I did my time. Clearly judging from his comment he intends not to listen to that as much as he refuses to listen to or address people's issues with Obama no matter how clearly and thoughtfully and fact-based they are.

This particular blog of mine above qualities as more of a rant -- but there have been many blogs I have done which spell out many many facts and details about this administration and Frank continuously IGNORES THEM to patronize and condescend to me. The pity posture is all the more insulting. Pompous, I am okay and you are not, patronization. I hate that kind of manipulation. It really creeps me out in its ugliness. I think they call it "sweet" lemon also in psychology parlance. I am pretending I am being concerned about you but I really am doing all I can to discredit you to you and to others witnessing.

Maybe he is conscious he is doing this, maybe he is convinced of his own good will. Whichever is the case I have had enough and I will exercise the delete power. I do not like using it. But I am glad we have that tool.

best, libby
Stuart, thanks for commenting! It is so important those of us living in and recognizing this "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" kind of surreal media-propaganda dominated world of government corruption support each other! We do need to support each other and think up and down not right or left in terms of party loyalty -- to fight all the disinformation and let's you and him fight manipulation. We need to call out the corrupt elite.

I agree with you re the gun thing and everything else. Obama and the dark matrix will use every opportunity. They will talk humanitarian but they will twist things and worsen situations as they pretend to be helping. The gun crisis will be used against us not for us, all the while Obama is posturing with little kids his grave concern. More homeland surveillance, more oppression of those with emotional issues. I wish I had any kind of trust in my government, but they keep worsening not improving. The bullshit of responsibility -- ability to respond -- is a ruse. The response is more self- and one percent- aggrandizing behavior.

The banksters take $17 trillion from the treasury (are given it by their pimped out ones in Congress and WH) and now they and the clowns of Congress and WH jump up and down shrieking austerity and slashing social programs from the New Deal. Social security was our own money saved over the years. I bet they have raided it all and now must cover up by cutting it. Rat bastards! Give us back the $17 trillion for God's sake. How much of that did they circulate into the economy which was the faux understanding? None.

Take care. Will be checking out your wonderful blogs soon I hope.

best, libby
Gotta go for now. Algis! :-) TL, thanks for comment always so thoughtful. To be continued soon! best, libby
Peter, Rahm???? Don't get me started. Grrrrrrrrr. best, ll
I hadn't heard of this, Libby. Yes, it's disgusting, although I'd feel better about it if he'd include GWB's and Pinochet's Bible too. In any case, I can't imagine a future president getting sworn in on Obama's Bible, but who knows what horrors still await us?
Why does not one get it? Actually there is a message there Libby: Jefferson the deist who despised superstition and ridiculed religion, famously took a razor to his Bible and slashed out every miracle so as to “separate the diamonds from the dung.” Thus was created the “Jefferson Bible.”

King, likewise despised superstition and the notion of a personal god who heard and answered prayers. Indeed, he refused to be ordained until he was assured that he did not have to believe in rubbish like the holy trinity, virgin birth and resurrection in order to be a Christian or a minister.

In one of his letters Thomas Jefferson remarked that in matters of religion "the maxim of civil government" should be reversed and we should rather say, "Divided we stand, united, we fall." (See The Roots of Muslim Rage by Bernard Lewis.)

"I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded upon fables and mythologies." (Thomas Jefferson: (1743-1826), third U.S. president.)

"Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man. ... perverted into an engine for enslaving mankind ... a mere contrivance [for the clergy] to filch wealth and power to themselves." Thomas Jefferson!!

"In every country and in every age the priest has been hostile to liberty, he is always in allegiance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection of his own. ... History I believe furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. ... Political as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves [of public ignorance] for their own purpose." Thomas Jefferson again!

"Man, once surrendering his reason, has no remaining guard against absurdities the most monstrous. . . ." Thomas Jefferson yet again!

"It is too late in the day for men of sincerity to pretend they believe in the Platonic mysticisms that three are one, and one is three; and yet that the one is not three, and the three are not one." Thomas Jefferson!

"[T]he day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being as His Father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter." Thomas Jefferson!!!

I think that will suffice. It rather amazes me that no one has blown this whistle. No one get is. By these choices Obama is ridiculing superstition.
Sorry if that seemed a bit confused. What I'd like to see is Obama taking his oath on the Jefferson Bible.

Abraham Lincoln's religious beliefs are a matter of debate. Lincoln grew up in a highly religious family, but never joined any church. As a young man he was a skeptic. He was private about his beliefs and respected the beliefs of others. He never made a clear profession of standard Christian beliefs but he did believe in an all-powerful God that shaped events and, by 1865, was expressing those beliefs in major speeches.

Historian Mark Noll quotes Lincoln's friend Jesse Fell: “that the president "seldom communicated to anyone his views" on religion, and he went on to suggest that those views were not orthodox: "on the innate depravity of man, the character and office of the great head of the Church, the Atonement, the infallibility of the written revelation, the performance of miracles, the nature and design of...future rewards and punishments...and many other subjects, he held opinions UTTERLY AT VARIANCE with what are usually taught in the church." Noll argues Lincoln was turned against organized Christianity by his experiences as a young man witnessing how excessive emotion and bitter sectarian quarrels marked yearly camp meetings and the ministry of traveling preachers.

James Adams labeled Lincoln as a deist (i.e., a non believer in superstition and miracles). It has been reported that in 1834 he wrote a manuscript essay challenging orthodox Christianity modeled on Paine's infamous book The Age of Reason, which a friend supposedly burned to protect him from ridicule.

As Carl Sandburg recounts in Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years, Lincoln attended one of Cartwright's revival meetings. At the conclusion of the service, the fiery pulpiteer called for all who intended to go to heaven to rise. Naturally, the response was heartening. Then he called for all those who wished to go to hell to stand, unsurprisingly there were not many takers. Lincoln had responded to neither option. Cartwright closed in. "Mr. Lincoln, you have not expressed an interest in going to either heaven or hell. May I enquire as to where you do plan to go?" Lincoln replied: "I did not come here with the idea of being singled out, but since you ask, I will reply with equal candor. I intend to go to Congress."

William Herndon, Lincoln's law partner, stated that Lincoln admired deists Thomas Paine and Voltaire, and had read and knew of Charles Darwin before most. "He soon grew into a belief of a universal law, evolution, and from this he never deviated."'

I'll not go on. Suffice to say there is a hidden message in Obama selecting those twp particular Bibles owned by those two particular men.
Francois, will be back to read your meaty comments. Thank you!

This is a quote from wsws, Barry Grey and David North:

"The overnight transformation of candidate Jekyll into President Hyde is the expression of a political process. Whoever the occupant may be, the White House is the center of a global empire of repression, reaction and murder. Upon entering the White House, the individual becomes, wholly and completely, the instrument and property of the state. Any traces of humanity that may have somehow survived the self-debasing years-long process of electioneering are entirely destroyed the moment the new president enters the Oval Office.

"Obama seemed to make the transition from an obscure and inexperienced politician to the head of a global murder machine without any evident internal struggle. It appears that spending a good deal of his time drawing up “kill lists” and authorizing drone killings comes almost naturally to this president. He is reported to have called his decision to authorize the drone assassination of US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki a “no brainer.”

"Obama’s particular contribution to the US assassination program has been to institutionalize and bureaucratize it, introducing more precise systems, routines and procedures so as to make the process of killing people more effective. His callousness when it comes to killing is of a piece with the strangely bloodless character of his public persona. This is a man who seems incapable of expressing any genuine emotion or uttering a sincere sentence.

"Touted both before his first election and since as a master orator, he has in four years in office failed to deliver a single memorable line. His speeches have all the poetry of a CIA briefing book. They are, from the standpoint of vocabulary and grammar, somewhat more polished than those of George Bush. But as far as their content is concerned, they are no less banal.

"In Obama we see the complete fusion of the presidential personality with the real constituencies served by his administration: the corporate-financial elite and the military-intelligence apparatus.

"To install and maintain Obama in office, these forces have employed the political tropes of racial and identity politics developed by the upper-middle-class liberal and “left” layers who provide the ideological framework for American ruling class politics. The reactionary mixture of liberal Democrats, pseudo-left political groupings and trade union bureaucrats continues to provide political cover for Obama.

"It is already clear that the second term will mark an intensification of the right-wing policies of the first. The byword in domestic policy is austerity, targeting the core programs remaining from the 1930s and 1960s—Social Security and Medicare. The appointment of former Wall Street banker and point man in budget talks with the Republicans, Jacob Lew, as treasury secretary is an unmistakable signal.

"In foreign policy, the elevation of Obama’s administrator of drone attacks, John Brennan—a man who under Bush publicly defended torture—to the position of CIA director signals an expansion of military aggression and extrajudicial killings. It also points to further attacks on democratic rights.

"And yet, for all its ruthlessness and criminality, the ruling class has no means of reversing the inexorable decline of American capitalism. In the final analysis, its dependence upon military violence to uphold its global position will intensify, rather than diminish, the crisis of US imperialism.

"Obama’s second term will see a growth of popular anger and protest against mass unemployment, poverty, repression and war. In the US as around the world, the working class will enter into mass struggles that will, with stunning rapidity, expose the bankruptcy of the Obama administration and the vast structure of economic fraud and political deceit upon which it rests."

Lilly: Aside from being socialist propagandists: who are Barry Grey and David North? What are their credentials for credible opinions re world affairs? And why should any of us care what they have to say.
I think Francois makes a good point. Who is Francois Arouet and why should we care what he has to say? For God's sake, he can't seem to make a cogent point.
Obama's inauguration, a.k.a., The King's Speech.
Libby- I'm trying to figure out how I can look in my grandchildren's faces and convey hope. I was just tonight thinking nothing but bad, no- good thoughts about Obama and the whole inauguration, wondering whether I'd become bitter and cranky. I read somewhere about a person being in a bad mood since the first Gulf War. That's me. Thanks for the reality check.
Alan, that is a hoot. He should have used the GWB bible. That would have been far more appropriate for Obama policies!!!! And what will come of the Obama bibles. I don't think he ramped up the importance of Lincoln's or MLK's but will history be corrupt and continue to pretend Obama was a good leader? best, libby
Francois -- I appreciate all that background info. Thank you! It is fascinating. Love the Lincoln line re heaven and hell.

You know I was annoyed at the 2 Bible hype (someone suggested he add FDR's and I suggested Michelle could handle them easily and show off her wonderfully toned upper arms in the bargain with their heft -- but since he is gutting the New Deal programs maybe he stayed away because of that) but I didn't even give a serious thought to the old religion vs. state issue. Glad your share highlights that dimension.

I don't think Obama was making a subtle statement ridiculing superstition. Obama in my eyes was being his opportunistic, status-seeking hubristic self, exploiting all the trappings for image he and his handlers could get their hands on. Impression management is number one priority with Obama. I thought it was truly tacky re the two bibles. Overkill once again. What a creepy circus. But so many are worshipful of it all. It staggers. Rhetoric without substance is part of that. Promises without followup. Clinton sold nights in the Lincoln bedroom. Hucksterism is irresistible. Obama tries to elevate himself with proximity to worthier others, living or dead. Was sorry James Taylor showed up. Just like I was when Springsteen campaigned for him. And Ellsberg spoke up for him.

Lesser evilism. No talk of that anymore. Course not. Obama is the winnah, who cares about his values? Winning, ends justifies the means and eclipses reality apparently. MLK had a dream as they say. BHO has a drone. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Janice!! thank you!!! I too have been in a rotten mood since the FIRST Gulf War. I had a peace sign necklace and tied a yellow ribbon to it in those days. The peace sign really pissed people off. How could I be upset by the "good war". Say what?

I kept asking why the teebee would not report the casualties of the "enemies". The numbers were phenomenal but collateral damage was no biggie back then, as well. The scud missiles so exciting, so macho and dramatic. Daddy Bush got goaded into the war when Mailer called him a wimp, wasn't it?

I couldn't figure out why some of my old anti-Vietnam war buddies weren't as upset by the war as I, and then I finally got that some of them were Jewish and Israel factored into their hawkishness when it came to the Middle East! it took me a while to connect the dots. Sigh.

Francois, I agree with those socialists and find them excellent reporters and eloquent commentators. The disinformation or blackout void of information about international crises so often we are at the bottom of, by we I mean the Obama administration, from most of the media, even the alternate media, is disturbing. wsws is a great source of news and commentary. a relief from cherry-picking faux-progressives. especially the Obama enthralled ones. I seek out many sources and wsws has been proven on point countless times. They called out the Al Qaeda-linked troops in Syria and Libya long before anyone else mentioned it. It is still hardly mentioned and should horrify. The same jihadists who maimed and killed our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are being enabled by us via Saudi Arabia to topple Assad. War on terror my ass. What a sham. Craven means justifies craven ends once again!
