John Donne Revisited for the People of Japan
on the disastrous event of the Tohoku Pacific Offshore Earthquake
No country is only an island, entire of itself;
every one of us makes the world
We are all part of the main
And if people, land, homes and cars are washed away by the sea,
Japan is the less, the world is the less,
As well as if a promontory were,
As well as if the home of a friend’s were lost
or your own home were suddenly gone.
The death of any person diminishes me
Because I am involved in humanity,
And therefore never wonder for whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for you and me and everyone of us,
for all of humanity.
First came the earthquake
Hard after the tsunami
Then four explosions at Fukushima nuclear plants
TEPCO stonewalls the public
Prime Minister Han tries to steady the nation
He’s walking a tightrope
How can any leader go this alone?
President of China Hu Jintao gives Emperor Akihito
Condolences and people of the world light candles,
Sending money and workers to help
We all wait to see how bad the radioactivity will be
We all know Japan suffers what could happen to us.
We all suffer what happens to Japan.
