Open Call: Which of Your Posts Had the Most Views?

Rate: 49 Flag

With the flurry of activity anticipating this latest OS Vaporization Theory, many have called for reposts, Open Calls and contingency plans.  After reading Matt Paust's letter to Kerry this morning, I got to thinking about what the real currency is for the owners of OS: Page Views.

Let's help Kerry capture the picture of the value of OS that he and his management can really relate to.  Go to your blog, select the "Popularity" tab at the top; then select the Most Viewed category in the first box and All Time in the second box; and you will see at the very top of the list the post that earned you the most views since you have been posting here.

With a little effort, you will be able to copy the entry and post it in the comments below, like this one of mine:

Let's continue to help Kerry get a handle on the value of our work!

UPDATE:  I know many have struggled trying to copy their data in the form is appears on the Most Viewed list.  It takes a bit of jiggling with your cursor and right-click button to be able to highlight the entire entry, but it can be done.

  • Put the cursor right beside the first letter of the title;
  • Hold down the shift button on your keyboard, move your mouse to the end of the sections you want to highlight, press the space bar, right-click and copy

If you don't have the patience for that, please include a link to your piece so our newer OSers can take a peek at the "winning" post if they'd like.

Instructions for putting links in comments:

1. Right click on the title of your post and select "copy link location".

   Example:   http://open.salon.com/blog/linthesoutheast/2011/05/14/the_surprising_history_of_my_home_town

2.  Come to this comment thread and paste the link into your comment along with the rest of the statistics, etc.

3.  To really pretty it up with a hyperlink, go here for instructions.

I had a post, "Dog-on-Cat Action" featuring hidden-camera photos of Skypixio, Sheepdog, Tink, Man Talk and Rick Santorum, that got 87,000 views, but I deleted it in a fit of pique a couple of flounces back.
Great idea, Lezlie. I'm gonna put mine here, which might be the best place for all of us to put them - a central location for Kerry and his gang to find them all. I did notice that the top listed was not the most popular. I scrolled down until I found a much more popular one, and there might be others further down, but this is from the first page:

Very good idea. But, I agree with Matt that it should be centralized and we should all put it here.
My most viewed, by far, is a strange one. Makes one realize that what we write goes outside the walls of OS.

I think your total number of views on that one piece is more than my total number of views ever. However, this was my most viewed piece with about 2,400 views.

http://open.salon.com/blog/bernadine_spitzsnogel/2012/04/13/on_mommy_track_choices

It was also an EP.
By far, my August, '10 post RATTED OUT BY MY FOUR-YEAR-OLD, w well over 2700 views...it's abt how my son threatened to call the police when I insidted he go to bed and did, that is, randomly hit 911 and they did show.

r.
I never looked at popularity before. I had no idea that many people were reading my work. I figured most people who read it commented. Guess not.

Now I get why people are worried about EP's and covers.
Oh, we're putting them here?

Great idea, Lezlie! And I would agree with the others a centrally located compilation makes best sense.
Mine's modest by comparison with some. It's also my one and only EP.
I doubt I've really contributed all that much in the way of mass appeal to OS, but it isn't for lack of trying at more than one point.

Good idea, Lezlie -- we get a lot of views on posts over here on OS.
Where's Scanner? His have gone really high in views, I remember him mentioning...
jlsathre's bookstore post ought to be on this list too.

This one of mine went a bit viral, none of my others are remotely close to this one -- a story of a strange repetitive nightmare I had as a child:

It wasn't even an EP, and it didn't have that many rates or comments. I have no idea why all those people looked at it.

I've probably had half a dozen others between 5,000 and 10,000.
Just Thinking, wow that's incredible!

Also, I just checked the latest stats on jlsathre's bookstore post, and it is now over half a million views.
My "champion" has been "Real Men! He Men! Pictures! Who's the Manliest of Men". This post was in reality a tribute to my son but has had 43 ratings and 196,442 views.
My "favorite" and "top rated" has been "Why 'Men of a Certain Age' Watch 'Men of a Certain Age'" with 49 ratings and 6,477 views.
And unfortunately, I've had more than a few posts of which I have been incredibly proud but which have "bombed" in terms of ratings and views.
Smart move, Lezlie.
I got almost 111,ooo views on a post about 15 ways to cut back, at the height of the recession. It wasn't a great post, it just caught the viral wave, as some do. (I posted it on Huffpo as well, and can only imagine the views it generated from there, as well. Will never know.)

Wow on JT and Jl. I'd like to read a post where they describe how their post went viral and how it felt.
There was also the one that Sarah Fister Gale did, Why Rick Santorum Would Have Killed My Daughter, that got over 200,000 views. Kerry Lauerman even wrote a short blog about it.
Geez I am really unpopular huh? Well, my big number is not attached to an EP I managed 25117 hits on a little piece titled "101 Words for Penis".
I had never checked this before. I was surprised by the result:

I'm assuming it got so many page views because of the title's reference to the popular TV show (and it wasn't about Charlie Sheen). Though I like the piece, which ridicules boorish behavior by male celebrities, it's not one of the ones I would put in the time capsule.

I've never looked at the popularity tab before and I don't use tags to generate traffic. I did a meaningless post about foot and toe fetishes when I stumbled across some groups on flickr and it has a surprising number of views. I just looked at some phrases I wrote and it's not surprising that search engines picked it up even though it wasn't timely.

My "Blowin' in the Wind & Rolling Stones" post was second with 4447.

My "Xanax. Because sometimes life is best when you can't feel it" post came in third with 2854.

According to my numbers the old saying is out of order, it should be "Sex, Rock and Roll and Drugs."

We do drive a lot more traffic here than we realize, I guess it's not enough to make it pay.
Lez: I'm recommending everyone come by here to rate so we can get this post into the "Most Viewed" Feed. As the 4 Hour Feed has disappeared (perhaps for the very final time), it seemed prudent.

25 Things I Learned From Opening a Bookstore

I'm actually a little embarrassed that this keeps showing up, but it's been fun watching the numbers. I wrote a post about it, but never put it up.
My "What Not to Put in Your Vagina" post has supposedly received 13832 views. According to my own records it;'s still getting around 100 page loads a day, mainly from odd places like Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, Lithuania, and Ontario (wherever the heck that is). There's apparently a strong interest overseas in posts that involve tapioca.

Rush Limbaugh Advertisers, Wake Up And Smell The Ashes

AUGUST 7, 2009 9:30PM EDT

By Roger Fallihee
What the hell. Let me give your suggestion a try -- and the post a bump in the process.

OK, what I feared was so turns out not to be. "Life in Newspaper Hell": EP, 29 ratings, 3,255 views, 46 comments. Not bad for someone who tends to fly under the radar and disappears for months at a time....
I had a three-parter on a traumatic romance with a femme fatale. The second, In Over My Head, Tamara part 2, got an EP and had 2,049 views, well below the OS average tops it seems.
Boanerges: just snooping around your page -- were you thinking of your 'most comments' instead of 'most views' ?
Life in Newspaper Hell deserved all those views and I didn't notice any flame-ups in comments...then I went to your 'most comments' list and think I found it...
*sigh*
Glad that particular dustup went by the wayside, although it's just not right for one personal avatar of your own to rate another post/avatar *of your own* just to get another rate.
That's just lame and I've personally quit reading those people entirely.
Oh sorry, L, wrong thread. : )

The Grammar dog first???You must be a smart one.
Just to demonstrate the importance (or lack thereof) of page views, I point to Liam O'Donoghue's "Salon Week in Review," currently #3 in the "Most Viewed, Past Day," even though it has only 3 rates and 9 comments.
JT, did I get the instructions wrong? Dang. Have to recheck. Nope, "Life" had the most views.

Anyway, the post to which you refer wasn't one of my more spectacular moments, and I got a good drubbing (as well as some support). And nearly twice as many comments and half as many views as "Life" -- not to mention many more "rates".

Bump.

Yep, 53,202 views. Put that in your smug writer's pipe and smoke it.

Much more popular when another more, ahem mainstream website recommended it. Problem is, if your readers ain't other OS writers, you don't get comments/ratings. Ed-I-Tor like Honey Badger, she don't care.

For some strange reason, "Fun for the Weekend" is the most viewed on my blogsite. WHich is weired, because it has very little popularity value, but is about someone in the Houston "community" that would rather stay under the radar.
Art James and "who loves you baby" has a better turn of the kindness we see here.

All of us need to be using "links" comments like I am. I have a How to"page".

If you really are too frustrated, please, come to me thru PMs and give me your link and which comment page or post you want it on and I will do it for you.

The page also tells you how to itallic and bold your text.

I know I am asking to be inundated, but it is worth it.

The reason these things are disappearing is the staff that overseas particular issues on that front page are leaving.

Actually, I have fixed the page about lin king in comments (L, feel free to erase if you think it is all too much)

Okay, I'll dive into the pool as well. Hey, I'm at the shallow end, should I be going head first? What the hell, I'm an impulsive lad.

I'm not a super popular tag maker and I'm hardly topical as far the rest of the 'Net is concerned, but all my views are top shelf, babee!

A quick note, those were both OC EPs and they were my first two.

Great idea, Lezlie!

Well, Dianne S-L tells me that my most viewed is over 7,000. I have, apparently, no damned idea how to do this and I'm afraid that no amt of tutoring is going to help this addled mind.

Nurse Ratched Agent of the Combine 3159 views

(On that one I theorize the hospital in question circulated the piece to the offending parties, plus some, as a cautionary tale.)

Good idea to see the value of OS. However I think there must be other reasons we dont have the four hour feed anymore. It keeps cliques from forming. hmmm? I can't think of any other reasons...

Ugh, how did I miss this? I've been on OS far too sporadically lately. I like this idea of yours - great way to prove a point.

My most-viewed post is "Scary News: Halloween has vanished from Paris" (http://open.salon.com/blog/alysa_salzberg/2011/10/31/scary_news_halloween_has_vanished_from_paris), which is currently at 3588 views, which really surprises me.
Sorry - I've never been good with numbers: 35883 views.
I reposted my 53,000+ views smash hit.
