I think my hair is going to fall out, or the hair epic

Rate: 4 Flag

Let me start by saying that I have dyed my hair for more than a year now. When I came to college, I had just broken up with my high school sweetheart, moved 200 miles away from home, and I was ready for a change.  So I dyed my hair purple!

Purple Hair

(Pic by my friend Paloma.) And let a few of my friends draw on me, but that's another story.

After that faded (I got bored), I went blue.

Better Blue Hair

Better pic, compliments of Madame Beloved aka Susan M! (Although I have to say, I look a little bit contorted. Still lovely photography, MBD)Bad pic, but it's the only one I have that can show how blue my hair was. Now, for those of you that have ever dyed your hair or helped someone dye their hair, you know that a color like that on darker hair (like mine) requires bleach. The first time I bleached my hair, it was fine. I had none of the "straw" problems that some people I know deal with.

I let the blue fade to an orange red for a while. Honestly, I'm not sure why it did that, but it was pretty cool looking, so... okay. Weird chemistry. (Now that I think about it, I'm a chem student, I should know these things, but whatever.)

Over the summer, I bleached a streak of it again and got this hairdo:

Black and Pink Hair

(Pic by my friend Allie.) Which I liked.

Although it's been a long journey to this point, this is where it gets epic.

I tried last week to bleach my whole head, in order to dye my hair lavendar with a really pretty Manic Panic color I just found. HOWEVER, the bleach only set in a few places, so I look like a leopard to begin with. Also, the purple did not set entirely, AND my hair is being very frizzy thin, which is unusual for me. I am afraid it is going to fall out entirely, since it seems to have a whole bag of tricks up its metaphorical sleeve. I'm not even going to post a picture of it, because it horrifies me so much.

I know this isn't very interesting to a large group of people, but it's been an interesting experience. That, and I need to find some way to justify looking like a leopard. I've been wearing a lot of hats.
hi lissa - ooohh honey, I feel bad for you. It's been many years since I botched a dye job, and I had to go embarrassingly to my hair-dresser to sort it out. I have no words of advice on fixing it, but I would say maybe a deep conditioning treatment is in order about now.

Then I might try a temporary or semi-permanent paint-on type that doesn't need to penetrate the hair shaft.

Thanks for the cool pics - my son had blue hair a couple of weeks ago, but it's faded to more of a seafoam green right now.
Listen to lpsrocks. She's knows what to do. Deep conditioner sounds like a great idea. As for the unusual color pattern, I'd go with "I meant for it to look like that." Ooh, so sorry, sweetie. You still look beautiful, I'm sure!
Updated, better pick for the blue hair. Thank you Madame Beloved!
I know some people who would pay good money to have leopard hair. Seriously, you should just hold your head high and pretend that's the look you were going for. Next thing you know, it will be the latest fad and they'll all be asking you how you did it. It's nice to meet you. Welcome to OS!
I really like what's happening in that last pic. And what cute glasses! No advice on frizzy, bleached hair--I've let mine go but your post inspires me to do something fun again. I'm taking on (teaching) a fifth grade starting the day after the election, and if there's anything 10-year-old girls love, it's a hip and pretty teacher. I hope they won't be disappointed with my middle-aged self, but the least I could do is have cool hair!
The second photo--with the blue hair--isn't really contorted. You were walking forward and turned to look at me. I probably told you to so I could take your photo. That's always been one of my favorite photos of you. I think you look absolutely beautiful!

And I agree. The leopard hair will be the envy of many. You can give lessons in how to achieve the leopard look!
I really like your hair color in the 1st picture!
What hair dye did you use?

Thanks I hope I can dye my hair a similar color :) x
I'm so sorry to read about what happend to you, but I also have to say I know exactly what you're going through! When I was younger, I used to change my hair color every two weeks, as I was getting bored of it very fast. after a couple of years, my hair started to fall out until, in a couple of months, i was almost completly bald. I still don't know the couse for that, but nobody could help me. Thank God I found noriko wigs . Although I really miss the times I had my own hair, some of these wigs look better than my real hair used to.
The medical cause for losing your hair is not yet fully identified. however, I understood that lpw-quality hair dye and other hair products could lead to an accelerated rate of falling out! This happend to me when I was 21 and, as yoy can imagine, I was depressed for a very long period of time. In the end, I have my best friend to think for introducing me to the Raquel Welch wigs . I can really say it's the best thing that happend to me. I'm so happy with the way they look and the way I look that I got all my self-confidence back in a matter of days!
