Imagine a world without divorce

Rate: 2 Flag

One man is trying to make this a reality.  It doesn't really matter whether or not one California man's effort to get a divorce ban voted on as an amendment next year is a farce or the result of a sincere desire to protect marriage.  Attacking divorce reveals the flaws in Prop 8 while also showing how frail marriage is in our culture.

What if you couldn't get divorced?  What if divorce had the same stigma that it had years before?  I think of Mad Men's episode where Betty found out that getting a divorce wasn't so easy, a striking comparison to nuptial realities.  Is it that no one should get married without vowing to uphold its sanctity, gay or straight?

Or, if there was no divorce, would gays really want the opportunity to get married?  Bill Maher has argued that he is for gay rights but against gay marriage because he is against all marriage.  Can we support marriage while still supporting divorce?

This one man's crusade brings up a lot of questions.  Ban Divorce?  Who would have thought....

OMG. If I had not been able to get divorced I believe I would be dead now. It should be against the law to be married before the age of 30, which I consider barely the age of reason.
Argentina didn't legalize divorce until 1988. Marriages still fell apart at almost the same rate as here but couples just lived apart and went on to form common-law pairs. I don't know what kind of support was required or if it was.
Wow, Abrawang, thanks for that info. Here in rural Missouri those types of common law divorces are commong, because divorces are too costly. I guess not much would change here either.
Marriage can be wonderful and it can be hell. Until we become more perfect human beings, mistakes are going to happen. Banning??? too extreme. Better to work on creating an emotionally healthy society so we can raise children who will make better decisions for themselves.

BTW...I like your profile....look forward to reading more of your work.
