How reactions to Haiti reveals so much

Rate: 2 Flag

It seems that we are becoming somewhat ritualized in our national reaction to disasters.  This is what the recipe seems to be:

Numerous celebrities to urge us to donate, perhaps even in the form of a celebrity driven telethon, concert, or some other way to entertain us, guilt us, and promote the celebrity projects

A few generous celebrities to offer million(s) of dollars--and reminds us there are super rich people out there who have so much money to give on a whim--and makes us wonder if people should be this rich and perhaps if there was more equal distribution of wealth if people would be in such dire circumstances in the face of natual disasters

Saturated news for a few days, everyone mentioning it on every television show, with drop-off of saturation until news goes away completely

Every news reporter and/or celebrity visiting the disaster area, making you wonder why Al Roker really needs to be in disaster area with the rest of the Today show.  "On Location" is now the new code word for disaster-themed vacation.

A few discussions of the reasons why disaster area was in dire straights beforehand with FOX news hosts blasting these arguments as Anti-American

Am I missing something in this recipe...

And, seriously, please don't forget the animals or pets who need help too in Haiti:

So much I hardly know where to begin. The United States has pumped millions of recovery funds into Haiti through the years. That much of the money has been stolen by corrupt politicians in Haiti is not the fault of the United States.

You obviously hate the rich and famous as well as large corporations--a hate born of jealousy and frustration, I expect. You probably hate the United States as well. The undeniable fact is that without the generous assistance of all these entities, the situation in Haiti would be much worse.

Have you reviewed the relative assistance of countries, e.g., China and Venzuela, that espouse the collectivist political principles that you no doubt agree with?

You'll get your wish if the principles of the Obama administration continue. Because then there will be no rich people and no big corporations and the U.S. Government will be totally bankrupt. Then Haiti and its noble population will be left to self-destruct with or without the help of natural disasters.
Sorry, it's Venezuela. Would hate to disrespect a country you hold in such high repute.
Hey Gordon. What about the US military take over and ouster of elected president Aristide. McCarter has it right but she doesn't give credit where ruthless credit is due. The United States rules Haiti through the United Nations and the IMF. When the people wanted elected, democratic rule, the US military took that away.
"more equal distribution of wealth".........You mean like making sure that everyone has the same amount of stuff?

People are dying and you give us a post about wealth envy?
Hi, all,

Obviously my point about _our_ reaction to disasters was lost with people reacting specifically to the politics to the situation. That is another thing to add to this recipe:

Biased political reactions to the situation where a disaster occurs; add name calling, hateful speech, anger, and assumptions to spice up this dish perfectly.
