According to Joan Walsh on the Rachel Maddow show, sexism may have played a role in the loss of the Senator seat by Martha Coakley, but other factors like poor campaigning and the political culture in the state were more important.
I have to disagree with Walsh. If Democrats had been aware (and cared) of the sexism that has led to no elected Governors or senators in this state ever having been a woman, they would not have nominated a woman. A serious male candidate would have been a challenge for Scott Brown.
Post-Hillary, the elephant in the political room is still gender. I don't know if Democrats are unaware of the sexist bias that working class people have in that part of Massachusetts, or they were just so overconfident they didn't think any Republican, male or female, would be appealing to these voters.
For a Hillary supporter (who thinks we can start saying "I told you so" to Obamites) who was disappointed in the sexism that prevented her from becoming President, I can't help but wonder when the Democrats will figure this all out. Now we just have to stay tuned and see if Hillary's old Senate seat will undergo the same sexist treatment that she endured while running for President.
