I come from a land down under ...

Rate: 4 Flag

I’m an Aussie.

They say we live in the “lucky country” and, yes, I think it’s true.  Australia is a diverse country.  It is a varied land filled with long golden beaches with sand so hot in the summer that it can burn the soles of your feet; with hazy blue mountains that lure many a hiker to explore but, who then are often caught out by the treacherous terrain that surrounds them; with lush green rainforests echoing with the sound of whipbirds calling to each other; and, at it’s heart there is the hot arid desert fondly known as “the outback”.

Aussies are proud.  At sporting events or wherever a good time is being had, you will often here that familiar chant. “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie … Oi, Oi, Oi!” .  We love our country.  I think we just know, even without having travelled the world, we live in a great place.  Yes, we think we’re lucky.

We love the sunshine; being able to spend lots of time outdoors; having barbies with our mates.

It occurs to me that you might not be familiar with our Aussie slang.  We use it all the time, it’s part of our everyday language.  A barbie is a barbecue.  We seem to shorten lots of words … maybe we’re just lazy?  Maybe we’re just trying to fit in as much as possible in every minute of the day?  I’m not sure.  Some Aussie’s also use rhyming slang.  I don’t and I really don’t know that many who do use it but every now and then someone will say something and even I, an Aussie, has to wonder what are they talking about!  For example, the other day I overhead someone saying, “The car bat and balled…”  Apparently, the car stalled!  Other times you’ll hear someone ask, “Where’s the dog and bone?” … they want to know where the phone is! What do you think?  Do you think we’re silly?

Well, that’s it for my very first blog.  But before I go I’ll leave you with this little bit of Aussie slang …. Cya mate. You’re on your Pat Malone.  I’m going to hit the frog and toad and swing by the shops to ava butcher’s hook.

Curious. What's a Pat Malone? Welcome (even if I'm a few months late)
trilogy ,

" See you, friend. You're on your own. I'm going to hit the road, go to the shops and have a look ( a Captain Cook, even )."
Hi there trilogy and Kim! Tril, I obviously missed you comment from April and just noticed Kim post a reply comment to you! (Although not sure you'll be any the wiser, tril!)

Thanks guys!
