What Love Is Love?

Rate: 17 Flag

(A Petrarchan, or Italian, Sonnet)

What love is love? The question he does ask

A love most hard to find it would so seem

‘Tis pure and true this love of which we dream

And want so greatly now to find, unmask

Have faith! ‘Tis not an impossible task!

Is true love bound by passion so extreme?

Perhaps it is defined by great esteem

For those in whose sweet love we seek to bask

A love so true is chaste, tender, faithful

It knows no bounds to deep, warm affection

It does not take devotion for granted

It honours, worships and is respectful

It proffers commitment and protection

Such pure and precious love is enchanted

What is true love to you? Bump!
Ah...this rings true.

So r----
It's a puzzle to me. Good sonnet. Rated.
abbaabba cdecde...you got it! Beautiful. (you rascal) you know I'm stressing over my own Italian Sonnet. I'd better get back to work.
I'm hoping that you have such a love, Little Kate.
JD: So ... how about you? I'd like to see something from you on true love .... Please????

Fusun: Love IS a puzzle! Thank you for reading again. I really appreciate it!

Trilogy: Hi sweetpea! I thought yours was done! Oh well... quickly, hop to it and finish! The challenge is on!
I did a piece yesterday I think.about a young couple and tragedy....that kind of speaks to it for me....at least in one guise....
A Divine Gift. You described it exquisitely.
"Have faith! ‘Tis not an impossible task!"
kate - That pure, precious love is "enchanted..."

That's the ticket! You are wise beyond your years. This was such a perfect poem. LOVED it!
JD: Ah yes, "Purest Love at Water's Edge" ... but true love, tragedy and sacrifice? What about in another guise? What do you see?

l'Heure Bleue: Thank you ... I like that you see it as I do

Just Cathy: Yes, a love like that is magical! Thank you for your high praise ... but "perfect"!!!! No, I am not worthy.
True love in another guise?
I'm game...I'll give it a shot soon.
JD: Can't wait! Thank you!
That's love alright. Nice one, Kate, very well said. R
I can't write it, but I know know it well.
Thoth: Ahh! Sounds like you know it well. Thank you for lovely comment.

Scanner: How wonderful! You do deserve to have it too!
Beautiful poem. It's so hard for me to define love simply because it comes in so many shapes and colors! All I know for sure is that I love very easily at all different levels. In my opinion, the strongest and most ferocious love is the love for our children. It's a bond that just can't be beat....no matter what.
a most worthy answer. good stuff.
Lovely, lovely, lovely. I agree with Patricia K. There is no truer love than that we have for our children ... and our pets, oddly. The kind between two unrelated adults is tricky, because it is often fleeting. Some of us don't survive the disappointment when the fire begins to change to embers.

Anne: Thank you and it's very nice to meet you Anne!

Patricia: Yes, the love for our children is indeed very strong and I know exactly what you mean too when you say "ferocious"! My poem speaks more to what I define, or desire, true love to be between a man and a woman. Thank you!

Caroline: Thank you so much!

Will: Si, Italiano! Grazie!!!!

Dina: I'm so glad you did! Thank you too!
Lezlie: Hi! Yes, reality gets in the way sometimes and, for many, the fire does die. But I choose to believe that there are those that, at some point in their lives, are lucky enough to find each other in true love and are just meant to be forever!
This is what love should be!
This was beautifully done. I (sorry-no better word) loved every word.
You create an archetypal quality with your work.

"Such pure and precious love is enchanted."

I love that, Kate. There are many layers here. I want to peel them all back. I know your golden heart lies beneath all of them....:)
I could never create this... am in awe of what you've done.
LL2 : Agreed!

PW: How lovely of you to say so!

Susan: Ooh! I feel exposed! Seriously, thank you for the lovely comment. Much appreciated.

Sally: Thank you so much! But you know ... if I can do it anyone can! I've been teaching myself a little about poetry and also with a little help from my friends here on OS I think I might have come a long way in a short time. I hope it's reasonable poetry at least.

mLee: 'Twas my first sonnet ... so I was hoping it would pass as reasonable. Nonetheless, it was good fun! Cheers to you too!
Well now. If I were an English professor, teaching a poetry class, I would give you an A+ on this poem. "Sweetpea" was right on the rhyme scheme. I scanned the metre and, sure enough, it is iambic hexameter. The octave and sestet form is correct. The theme is romantic, as it should be. Some might even say "mushy". (I'm kidding.) Next week's assignment is the daddy of 'em all, the Shakespearearean Sonnet.
Make that Shakespearean. (Some English professor, huh?)
dlvstudent: I was hoping you would drop by and critique it for me! Thank you. So sounds like I've passed okay!

And .. you know what? ... I was only thinking last night that I might tackle a Shakespearean sonnet! Guess I have to now!!!!

Wish me luck!
I love this sonnet!

Love is doing for someone else when you're too tired to do for yourself.
Nicely sonnetized, by the way! Most impressive, Kate!
Poppi: Thank you ... I'm so glad!

Pilgrim: What a wonderful way to describe love, Pilgrim! I agree. And thank you for the wonderful compliment, dear friend.
