The wonderfully warm winter weather gracing the east coast of Australia in recent weeks has been willing me to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of my local surroundings.
So a Sunday or two ago, I got up bright and early, and made the short forty minute journey from my home to Cape Byron - the most easterly point of mainland Australia.
Captain James Cook, the British explorer who charted the east coast of Australia in 1770, named the Cape after John Byron, a British vice admiral and explorer, who was also the grandfather of the famous poet, Lord Byron.
Cape Byron overlooks the beautiful seaside towns of Byron Bay

and Wategos Beach. Both renowned for the beauty of their unspoilt beaches.
A stately lighthouse perched on top of the rocky headland at Cape Byron stands guard over the precipitous cliff and casts its gaze to the Pacific Ocean ...
... and each day, it is the first place in Australia to be kissed by the sunrise.

Smithery: Hi there! It is indeed a spectacular place.
askme: I'm glad you enjoyed them. (Actually, I was just about to delete this post because it's rather simple and boring but here are three friends already who like the pics ... so I guess I had better leave it up now!)

Donna: Thank you! The first picture is of Tallows Beach. I took it on my way up to the lighthouse.
Bernadine: It's funny you know ... I truly was about to pull this post down not too long after putting it up ... thinking that it was probably a little boring and yet, here you all are! It makes me really I should never take anything for granted ... being able to live so close to the sea makes me indeed very lucky. You encourage me to write more about my home and I will try to accommodate that in the near future. Thank you.
Ode to Joy: It sounds like you live in a beautiful place too. Aren't we so very lucky? There are many, many beautiful beaches close by to where I live (I posted about Ballina a few weeks ago) ... so I am indeed extremely lucky.
hugs: I find that too ... water is so very calming. I also really enjoy looking out to sea, with a breeze on my face and just getting lost in my thoughts.
