Aussie Meat Pie

Aussies love their tucker.

There are many iconic Aussie foods.  There are the yummy sweet treats like Tim Tams, pavlova, lamingtons, Cherry Ripes, Fairy Bread, Jaffas, Violet Crumbles and Milo.  Then there are the not so sweet "treats" like Vegemite, Chiko Rolls and meat pies.

The Aussie meat pie has been around for about 150 years and has,  jokingly I hope, been referred to as Australia’s national dish.  It contains minced meat and gravy.  Just how much meat is actually in the pie is a question often pondered and one I suspect many would prefer not to have answered!

To be considered a true-blue Aussie you must have a generous helping of tomato sauce on your pie.  And the fair-dinkum, “She’ll by right, mate!” kind of Aussie bloke would NEVER be seen at the footy without a pie in one hand and a “coldy”  in the other!

In the state of South Australia, another Aussie dish has come to light  .... the Pie Floater.

Pie Floater

A meat pie floating in a bowl of pea soup!

OMG!  I’ve never tried one of these and don’t think I ever could!  They look absolutely disgusting!

And now a couple of Aussie ads that I thought you might enjoy.  This one is fairly recent and quite funny ...

This one is a compilation of some older ads ...

HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL SUNDAY EVERYONE!

If it's called a "Pie Floater" before it gets consumed, I wonder what they call it when it exits the building...... ;)
Oh, Kate, these are foods I hadn't heard of ! I had Anzac Biscuits only, which were good. Vegemite, yes, I did hear about but never tried. What fun post, but not my cup of tea - sorry for mixing the metaphors. ~R
Wow, fantastic! Thanks for a joyous singing morning. Pie filled fun! Ha. R
cartouche: I know! "Pie Floater" ... disgusting, eh?!!!

Fusun: I understand .... meat pies aren't my cup of tea either! Now lamingtons and Tim Tams ... well I'll have THEM with a cup of tea any day!

Sheila: Glad to bring some joy to your morning! 'Tis all a bit of fun!
Kate, all I can say is: more, more, more. In my part of the U.S. we have a very large community from the Caribbean, so "meat patties" are even sold in my local pizzeria (owned by an immigrant Italian family). I had never heard of them till I was in my thirties. My daughter had one for lunch the other day.

There's a lot around you, down under, that is just background noise to you. But we will love, love, love to hear about it.

MORE please!
Great Commercials. I loved me butt-off. But I don't know if I want any pie thats been around for a 150 years. They might be a bit stale!
DB: More? Goodness, if I dish up more Pie Floaters we'll all be sick!!! Only kidding! Thank you, DB. I will be glad to tune in a little more to the background noise here and see what I can channel your way.

scanner: And now YOU make me smile! THANKS!!
I'm licking my lips and drooling for ANY of the goodies displayed here.......Yum! Yum!

Yup; that includes the floater.....!

I have no problem either with a meat pie that contains the "meat" that really belongs in a meat pie made by a company that calls itself "Four and Twenty". Can't be THAT different from chicken; after all, a bird is a bird. During the middle ages in England it was a delicacy affordable only by the rich.

If someone named Rosemary, who speaks with an Aussie accent, shows up here, I sent her. Give her a floater and a Fosters..........

What a delightful post. The four and twenty ads are incredible.
I wish Madison Avenue was in Australia, so much more creative than most of what we see. I really want a four and twenty for lunch.
Not the one in the soup though.
rated with delight.
Little Kate..I love how you talk and I wanna know more about the sweet treats..whats a Tim Tam? And what is a footy? I would love to come there.
I'm happy to give that a try! Love meat pie, Shepard's pie and pea soup! All good!
Oh the pie floater! Almost as scary as some of the SPAM recipes I went through when putting together my current blog.
Best Wishes,
Blittie
skypixeo: Ah, sounds like you've tried many of these lovely delicacies! I'll certainly look out for Rosemary ... the Fosters is in the fridge .. but I hope she doesn't mind a tinnie?

Cindy: I'd be surprised if Will doesn't miss a meat pie just a little bit .. him being a New Zealander AND an Aussie! Now as for "pizzas" topped with eggs and bacon ... I'm afraid I just can't hack them either! Like the meat pie, more Aussie men than women would eat them! Now Vegemite ... yes, it does look like axle grease but we're raised on it from a very young age and we all love it! You've got to have it more than once ... lots of butter and a thin scraping of Vegemite. And yep, fish'n'chips are pretty good here, aren't they!

RomanticPoetess: Glad you liked the ads! If you can make it Down Under ... I'd love to "shout" you a Four'n'Twenty!
Will: If a meat pie in one hand and an ice-cold beer in the other appeals to you, YOU would fit right in down here! Hope you like the footy too!

Cindy Prochnow: I'm glad you like the Aussie accent! As opposed to Vegemite, I know you would all love a Tim Tam! They are just THE best ever, heavenly chocolate biscuit. Footy is the generic term for a number of football codes .. Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union. It depends on where you live in Australia as to which footy code is the most popular.
Just Cathy: Ah, you're a braver person than I am!! Good for you!

Blittie: I know .... VERY scary! And SPAM ... YUK!
The "pie floater" is something I have never seen and thankfully never had to eat :)
Translate please: And the fair-dinkum, “She’ll by right, mate!” kind of Aussie bloke would NEVER be seen at the footy without a pie in one hand and a “coldy” in the other!

Also, is tomato sauce sweet, like our ketchup or catsup? Otherwise, ewwwww.

You never said whether or not you like meat pies.

Lezlie
These photos are so realistic. I can't quite deal with the floating meat pie though, but then again, I have to admit I'm not the most adventurous eater. It is a fun post though.
There's a Cuban/Latin equivalent for meat pies and I can see why they're popular on the go food - hot, filling, and not too awful. My daughter's in NZ where it's not as prevalent, nationally speaking I guess.

I want some HOT STUFF! - that was a great ad, and the Scots on the construction site - brill! That must've been on the international Addie Awards show because it's a total hoot. Advertising in the US has just missed the boat in terms of humor. I could watch a funny commercial over a mindnumbingly stupid/pointless one all day long.

As for vegemite ::shiver:: it's not really a good argument that you eat it from childhood because it brings up that other question about jumping off a bridge... and makes you wonder if they served up shite pies from birth, would it be popular?

I hope you had a good day at work! thanks for the laughs♡
LL2: I've never eaten one and not likely too either!!! It looks disgusting!

Lezlie: Translation - The true-blue Australian male (something akin to red-blooded American male) loves to watch a game of football with a hot meat pie and sauce in one hand and an ice-cold beer in the other. "Fair dinkum Aussie" and "true blue Aussie" are term generally used to represent a steadfast loyal Australian who displays the Aussie ideals of mateship, a fair go for all, having a go, being down to earth and someone who helps out their mates/friends no matter what. I was waiting for someone to ask me if I like a meat pie ... I've had some here and there ... usually during winter when watching my kids play soccer but they're not something I particularly like ... I prefer sausage rolls or hot dogs! : ) I don't know but I think tomato sauce is a lot like your ketchup ... a little sweet but full of salt!

Gerri: I can't deal with the pie floater either! It looks so gross!

Gabby Abby: The ads are fun aren't they? There's a whole series of Four'n'Twenty ads from over the years ... usually full of good old Aussie humour! It's hard to explain the Vegemite thing ... it's an acquired taste I think and probably I think first-timers make the mistake of applying it to thickly on their toast or sandwich. But, hey, we Aussies get a real kick out of watching someone screw up their face when it first hits the tastebuds. Yep, we have a bit of a warped sense of humour!
2 foods I will never, ever try....but enjoyed the read.r
So what's the closest thing to an Aussie Oreo? : )
What a menu this would be!
hugs, me: I totally understand that you will never try them! They're not healthy at all and look pretty damn awful! But am glad you enjoyed the post!

JD: TIM TAMS! Australia's answer to Oreos ... and I'd have to say Tim Tams win hands down!
It actually looks really good (the first one, not the alien-eyeball-floater!) - how's about posting a recipe some Foodie Tuesday? :-)
Sorry I missed this yesterday but am loving it today!
Four'nTwenty, like most commercial pies, was a little heavy on the grissle. My favorite, while living East of Melbourne, were meat pies with additions (tomato, onion, etc.) made and sold by a shop called the Savoury Tart. The shop assistants were dressed to look like savoury tarts themselves :-)
@skypixie0: I hate beer. I prefer a bottle of Australian style fizzy lemonade: aka sparkling sweet lemon flavored water to 'Merikans and MooseMen. I also used to belong to the Australian Anti-Football League. Before you accuse me of being un-Australian remember that I have a genuine Ozzie accent - even if I do use it to speak like the Sillican Valley nerds these days. Like, totally.
I forgot to mention that I really miss Vegemite and proper-tasting tasty cheese. We take a trip to the San Jose Australian Shop at regular intervals, where we buy small jars of Vegemite to ration out over the next few months and Tim Tims that taste kinda flat because they have been nuked by US customs on the way in to the country. Apparently the ignorant custom guys think they are full of anthrax or fruit flies.
Yikes! It does look odd. But I don't doubt a whole nation - it's probably delicious. Some of our tucker looks and sounds odd to outsiders too. (I will take a box of Tim Tams please!)
I like meat pies, Kate. But I don't know about these.? Loved the videos.
You Aussies, do have a sense of humor though, don't you.
I've been thinking about getting a kilt -- after watching the commercial, maybe not so much. Enjoyed this.
I can't WAIT to visit your wonderful country...maybe not so much for the food....Lots of fun! Thanks and R.
Outside Myself: Do you think it looks good? I can't say I do! But one things for sure ... they are definitely not good for you! Full of calories and not much of anything healthy at all!

anna1liese: No problem! I hope you got a bit of a laugh out of it.

Rosemary: Hi there! Yes, the gourmet meat pie would be much tastier and healthier than the mass produced variety for sure! I haven't been to Melbourne yet (conicidentally will be there in just a few weeks time on a stopover) but that shop sounds like a real treat! It's nice to find another Vegemite fan here too! All my US friends just won't believe that it's great! And what is it with US Customs? I want to send a pack of Tim Tams to a friend but not if they're going to get nuked and taste yuk. Any ideas?
Bellweather Vance: No, honestly Aussie meat pies are pretty disgusting really. An occasional one might be okay but they're not healthy at all. Now Tim Tams, lamingtons, Crunchies and all of those other (also non-healthy) sweet things ... well they're just so very yummy!

trilogy: We absolutely have a sense of humour! Where else would you find a nation that could come up with such a disgusting thing as a meat pie full of gristle and gravy and have it become a national icon!

Marty's Husband: You? A kilt? Well to watch the commercial is to be fore-warned ... Bend the knees!

Mary Ann: And I would love to show you around if you make it here! Honestly, these foods are just a part of our culture. We do have some of the best quality and freshest food in the world on offer here. I certainly much prefer a fresh and simple meal.
I admit I had my share of the things but after the cat-meat scare of '89 I've cut back.
Floaters exiting the building and pizza with egg & bacon pretty much put the idea of food from my mind for the day, thanks Kate.
I beg you not to write about Chiko Rolls.
