Australia Floods: 3rd Largest City - "A Ghost Town"

Rate: 27 Flag

brisbane 5

Tonight the centre of the city of Brisbane, Australia's third largest city, has been likened to a ghost town by the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh.

Power was turned off all over the city earlier today due to rising flood waters.  Hotels, office blocks and towering apartment blocks are now without air conditioning, lighting and lifts.

In total, approximately 115,000 homes in Queensland are without power.  Many families are struggling as best they can without the everyday conveniences of lighting, hot water, refrigeration, air-conditioning, telecommunication services and cooked meals.

Unprecedented scenes of uncrewed luxury boats, pontoons, barges and even a restaurant (aptly named 'Drift') floating down the river - all on their way to Moreton Bay and open sea.

Weather conditions have improved in the past 24 hours with only isolated showers across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

But the death toll for the floods has risen.  There are now 12 confirmed dead.   Forty three people are still unaccounted for.

The Brisbane River is expected to peak at 4:00am Australian Eastern Standard Time and an estimated 20000-30000 people are likely to be affected by the waters.

Meanwhile the Bremer River in Ipswich peaked at 19.4 metres this afternoon instead of the 22 metres that had been predicted.  A welcome relief for the inhabitants of at least 1000 homes who whould have returned to water-logged homes had the waters reached the predicted level.

ipswich homes

Approximately 1700 Ipswich residents are still in evacuation centres tonight and thousands more have relocated elsewhere with friends and family.  The city is still under water but the worst appears over.  The recovery operation is now under way.

The Premier, Anna Bligh, described the circumstances of Ipswich and Brisbane as "very grim" and has warned the residents of Brisbane that they will wake up to a landscape never before seen in Brisbane -  one that will be both "shocking" and "unrecognisable".

But at times like this may the Aussie spirit shine brightly.

Hey now, Hey now ...
The Aussie spirit indeed!

You model it so very well, my friend. This is shocking stuff.....a whole city......God!!!

r
Thank you JD but there are so many modelling true Aussie spirit further north of me.

And what are you doing here? I thought you had gone! But, gee, it is good to see you!
Even as we watch and learn of such devastation, how can we not be moved deeply by voices such as yours as you share your fears, your love, your support and your hope. Thinking of you all as this continues on.
anna1: Sharing fears here is to receive love and support back from friends. I am so grateful for all of you. Thank you for your kind words.
May the true Aussie spirit over come this all Kate. I have been reading up on the floods on ABC online. Thinking of you and yours today and always here. This flood is so hard on so many. Seeing such a large city under water is shocking. My heart goes out for all involved in this disaster.
Mission: Aussie's are often heard to say, "She'll be right, mate." and, Mission, we hold that deep within us ... we live it and we breathe it ... it will be alright ... sometimes it may take a while ... but it will be alright.

Thank you for keeping up with our news and for keeping us in your thoughts and sending kinds words of encouragement and of love. Thank you.
glad it peaked and is on it's way down- that at least the full damage has been done as far as water. Are people safe financially, or will this ruin people like Katrina did?
hyblaean-Julie: Whilst the river at Ipswich has peaked, Brisbane River is yet to peak in Brisbane itself. That is predicted to be in 4 hours time. So the worst is yet to come for Brisbane. Financially, yes, there will be enormous hardship. Many small businesses might not survive this. Some larger businesses and international corporations based in Brisbane I'm sure will face difficulties as well but, of course, only time will tell. Mining companies in Queensland and agricultural industries (fruit, vegetables and cotton) will take some months to recover and become fully productive again. Fruit and vegetable prices are set to soar.
:( ugh! may the 4 hrs pass with only minimal rising- that's got to be like sitting on a ticking bomb.
hyblaean-Julie: Yes, we're all hoping that it doesn't reach the level they've predicted ... flooding there is already bad enough and more is going to make it even worse ... but unfortunately it will rise more ... just how much remains to be seen.

So much infrastructure is already badly damaged. The Premier advised a few hours ago that a floating walkway along the beautiful Brisbane waterfront is being dismantled in sections and will be disposed of as it is presently at risk of ripping away from it's moorings and has the potential to create major damage if caught up in the flood waters. Likewise, a huge party boat/barge called, "The Island", is likely to be scuttled or sunk tonight for the same reason. A 1.5 tonne anchor is being helicoptered in to secure a large ferry further up river that is also at risk of being swept away in the raging waters and thereby potentially causing huge damage as well. Ugh! for sure!!! : (
I had no idea about Brisbane being flooded. Thank you so much for your excellent reporting on this - and for showing us by your words and encouragement what the Aussie spirit is all about. I hope you, your friends, and family, will be all right and that the whole affected area will quickly come back to normal (or as close as that can be) without any further death or destruction.
Alysa: The Brisbane flood situation developed suddenly and very, very quickly. My family are all safe and sound ... now. It was a bit scary yesterday but all is well now. Thank you, Alysa, for your very, very kind words and well wishes. I appreciate them.
All love and support to your great country in it's hours of need.
Prayers for Australia...

wish I were there to help!
Ever since I head abot these flods I have been saying nothing but prayers for you.
rated with hugs and more
Excellent reporting but very sad to see this happening to the country that I one day look forward to visiting and always think of as so much more civilized than ours.
This is horrible, Kate, sending thoughts to all our Aussie friends.
Sheila: Thank you ... and so very much appreciated.

Debby: Your prayers are so much appreciated and that you would love to help, so very, very generous and thoughtful. Cheers to you lovely lady!

Linda: LOL! I can tell you have been saying so many prayers! Seriously ... thank you so very much. You are a wonderful friend!

cartouche: Don't let something like a "little" flood put you off visiting! We would love to have you visit! I think, for the most part, we are a very civilised society ... you just gotta watch out for those Tasmanian devils though!
Rita: Thank you again, lovely lady. It has to get better soon. Right?
UPDATE:

THE DEATH TOLL HAS JUST RISEN TO 13.
Thinking of you, looking at the hour, here, there, anticipating the cresting of the tide in about three hours time, wondering if you will manage any sleep. Middle of the day. Middle of the night. Know that all of you are here with all of us. As we are there with you.
anna1: You are dear to hold us in your thoughts like this. Yes, the peak is expected in 3hrs time. I have continued to watch reports until right now and I am about to go to bed.

13 are dead now ... such terrible news. And it seems more to be found yet. Grave fears are held for some of the missing. Terrible news.

All of us there with you ... and you here with us ... a beautiful thought. Such good friends. Thank you.
I must go to bed now. Goodnight!
Thank you for this good reporting. Climate change seems very real to me. So sorry for all the flooding.
Thanks again for these updates, Kate...the ramifications will be going on for awhile, I'd guess...so heartwrenching.
Sending up prayers for you and all Aussies, dear Kate. Thanks for this report. I had no idea. :(
Rated.
Thanks for your continued reporting on this. Will be thinking of you, and hoping for the best.
Great report, though so sorry this is happening to you Aussie's. The Aussie spirit indeed! I've got my map in front of me on the wall of my office - looking at Brisbane, Ipswich & Linsmore. So, did your daughter come to your place? My prayers are with all.
I am remembering how the Katrina flood in New Orleans shook me to my core and I wasn't even there. I can only imagine what you are feeling today. Stay strong, Katie.

UPDATE:

THE RIVER IN BRISBANE PEAKED 2 HOURS AGO.

TWO VERY LONG SECTIONS OF A FLOATING WALKWAY, MADE OF CONCRETE AND STAINLESS STEEL HAVE BROKEN OFF AND ARE CAREERING DOWN THE RIVER WITH THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE EXTRAORDINAR DAMAGE. A TUG BOAT AND POLICE BOAT ARE MANIPULATING THE PIECES, MOVING END TO END, TO ENSURE THEY DO NOT WRAP AROUND THE PYLONS OF MAJOR BRIDGES OVER THE RIVER.

AN EXTRAORDINARY JOB IS BEING PERFORMED BY THE MEN OPERATING THE BOATS.
Thinking of you, please stay safe!
UPDATE:

THE PORT OF BRISBANE IS CLOSED.
"at times like this may the Aussie spirit shine brightly"

I know that it will. My thoughts are with the people being affected by this disaster.
UPDATE:

SIGNIFICANT FLOODING RIGHT AROUND THE BRISBANE RIVER.

POLICE HAVE ADVISED THE RIVER HAS OFFICIALLY REACHED IT'S PEAK. THE PEAK HAS BEEN REVISED DOWNWARDS FROM 5.2 METRES TO 4.46 METRES.

AUTHORITIES ARE OPTIMISTIC THAT THE LEVEL OF FLOODING WITHIN THE CITY WILL NOT BE AS BAD AS HAD BEEN FEARED.

UNOFFICIAL WARNINGS THOUGH THAT THE WATER MAY TAKE DAYS TO SUBSIDE.

UNCONFIRMED REPORTS: THREE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH THEFT AFTER STEALING ITEMS SUCH AS LUXURY BOATS AND PONTOONS THAT HAVE SNAGGED ALONG THE RIVER BANK.
UPDATE:

54 BRISBANE SUBURBS AT RISK.

FLOODS LIKELY TO AFFECT 40,000 PROPERTIES AND 20000 HOMES WILL BE INUNDATED WITH WATER.

120,000 HOMES CURRENTLY WITHOUT POWER.

POWER WILL BE RESTORED TO SOME HOMES TODAY THAT HAVE ESCAPED BEING WATER AFFECTED.

2100 BRISBANE ROADS ARE FLOOD AFFECTED.
Zanelle: I so appreciate your concerns and also that you are here to read. Thank you.

Just Thinking: Yes the effects of this will be felt for some time yet. Rising costs of fruit and vegetables; major infrastructure damage and so on. I appreciate you coming by to read.
UPDATE:

THE OFFICIAL CONFIRMED DEATH TOLL CURRENTLY REMAINS AT 12. A BODY OF A MAN WAS FOUND IN A CAR IN IPSWICH LATE YESTERDAY HOWEVER AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY AS TO WHETHER THIS DEATH IS A RESULT OF THE FLOOD DISASTER.
UPDATE:

THE NUMBER OF MISSING PEOPLE HAS BEEN REVISED UPWARDS AND NOW STANDS AT 78.

QUEENSLANDERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO BOIL DRINKING WATER DUE TO RISK OF CONTAMINATION.
Kate, thank you for this excellent report. It really brings the tragedy to life. I'm sure that the Aussie spirit will, however, endure as you say. Thinking of you and all the Aussies Down Under. - R
Unbreakable: Prayers so very much appreciated for all those affected. Thank you!

Sophieh: I hadn't intended to become a reporter and not sure that I am a good one but do appreciate that you appreciate this! Cheers for now.
trilogy: Armed with maps and prayers ... you are indeed a great friend! Smiling here ... AGAIN!!!! Tril, my daughter evacuated to her partner's dad's place on higher ground just out of Ipswich but last night she made it back to her home! The river didn't reach quite the expected level and thankfully that spared her home. The water rose into one end of her street but thankfully not into her home! She is without power and the like but all are indeed well now!
Lezlie: Katrina was absolutely catastrophic and I remember how it shook me up too. My heart and soul ached to see the absolute devastation but more so at the suffering and tragedy that so many endured. Please know that I me and mine are absolutely fine and are safe. I am not in Brisbane. My son and my daughter are but they too are absolutely fine and safe. Thank you my friend ... thank you.

Ablonde: Thank you too. I am most definitely safe and well. Just reporting here on what is happening for others just north of me.
Kate, I'm glad to hear you are in good shape and your daughter's house was spared.

How many hectares of farmland are affected, any idea?

I remember when my house was destroyed by water (from a heating pipe upstairs). Every single aspect of my life was touched - it felt like I had been turned upside down, for many months. It is very difficult to imagine an entire city having this happen to them. Mind boggling.

Thank you for bringing this to us. We've been a little preoccupied with the Giffords shooting, it's hard to remember there is a world outside as well.
nanatehay: Thank you so very much for kind thoughts for
all Aussie's affected. And I know too that the good old Aussie spirit will definitely shine through ... we're a hardy bunch down under! For sure!

lizw9: I don't know about this being an excellent report ... but thank you so much anyway! Yep, the Aussie spirit is gonna shine! She'll be right, mate! ; )

pastvoices: You are so very dear. Thank you! I appreciate it ... very much.
Divorce Bard: Thank you! I couldn't tell you exactly how many hectares of farmland have been affected but I do know that 75% of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone. I'm not sure if it helps but I've seen it reported as greater than the land mass of France and Germany combined!

But how much of that is actually farmland, I'm not too sure. If I can find out I'll get back to you.

I understand that Queensland has a total land area of 1,722,000 sq kilometres ... so therefore calculate that approximately 1,291,500 sq kilometres are affected. Some of Australia's most fertile and productive land area is under water.

By the way, don't you talk in 'acres' over there?

And, oh dear, you had a house destroyed by water? I am so sorry to hear that. So you will know very well what many are facing. I can only imagine. It is what I feared when my daughter's home looked as though it was going to go under. She had very little with her and nothing was insured.

It is mind boggling that this is happening to an entire capital city but thankfully it is not as bad as was feared. Small and big business alike are all closed down in the city for now. No power to the CBD. Hopefully waters will recede quickly and the recovery process can begin soon.
DB: I need to correct something I said up there ... 75% of Queensland is flood affected ... 1/3 has been declared a disaster zone.
mLee:

THANK YOU! You are the first to say something of my very first EP!

I'm smiling.

But you know what? This is going to sound really ungrateful ... but I don't write here for EP's. It is nice and it certainly made me smile but it is not why I'm here.

And besides ... I would much, much prefer an EP for poetry or something that I had poured my heart and soul into and not reporting news. I know I'm not a good enough poet but one day perhaps if I had an EP for poetry ... or more so, if any one of my wonderful friends who are much better poets than I were to receive an EP for a poem ...that would make my smile so much bigger.

Having said all that ... you REALLY make me smile with this ....

... and to think, i knew her when she was just a poet

LOL!!!! That is just the funniest and loveliest thing!
Dear Kate, you've been a shining example of the Aussie spirit here all along. This is so sad. Thinking of the people and sending prayers. Glad you and your children are alright. Excellent report and updates.
I admire the 'She'll be right, mate', philosophy. Water disrupts and then water calms. I'm sorry I'm learning about it under these circumstances. Rest when you can, Little Kate and all Aussies.
Fusun: Thank you dear friend. Your thoughts and prayers are so much appreciated.

catch-22: I think it's a good attitude to have. We're a pretty optimistic bunch and our attitude seems to help with many things. Sometimes, just sometimes, we're too laid back for our own good. But under desperate circumstances like these ... that attitude will pull many through.
Thanx for reporting Kate and grateful that you have internet connectivity. We have hurricanes in Florida, my home state, and there is very little worse in terms of aftermath than flooding into homes and businesses. It takes lots of $$$ and a great deal of time to recover from that mess. Keep us informed. Glad you aren't in Brisbane.
Abby: Hurricanes? Crikey! I'm not a weatherman (or weathergal rather!) but they're similar to cyclones right? Australia occasionally experiences tropical cyclones ... wind and rain ... mainly in our coastal waters and very occasionally they reach land. I believe a cyclone might have fed the torrential rain prior to this flood. From what I've seen, lots and lots of money and lots and lots of time needed to recover!

mLee: Ah, what wonderful encouragement!!!! Smiling again!!!! I'll try! No guarantees! But EP's? Yeah right! No problemo!!!!! (And regardless of EP's ... I will always remember you.)
it's a relief just knowing the better things are heading your country's way.
r
Cyril: Yes, better things are headed our way I'm sure. We just have to take the good with the bad sometimes.
Aw, Kate, I'm with you all in solidarity. This is horrible, reminds me of New Orleans. Is is warm? I noticed the family is short sleeves. Be well and hope for the end to the rain.
Janice, thank you. I believe it is the first major city since New Orleans to be inundated like this so I think that is why we think of New Orleans. It is warm here ... it's summertime here in Australia and it is quite humid. This is a tropical part of Australia anyway so it is quite often humid.
I have a buddy down there on aol. He says there is increased danger from poisonous snakes now and everybody has to watch where they are walking, because the waters have dragged alot of nasty critters all over the place, that you often cant see in ankle-deep water, where you can accidentally step on them.
RW059: Snakes are definitely more of a threat at the moment I understand. There is less dry land and so they are moving up closer to homes etc. A friend was only talking about this threat yesterday.

There is also the threat of contaminated water now too. Residents are being advised to drink bottled water or boil water. Water is being transported to some towns because supplies of fresh water have been affected.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Much appreciated.
How terrible, Kate. The awesome power of nature reminds us, sometimes, who's boss. I hope people can rebuild their lives quickly. I'm sure the Aussie spirit will help in that. Glad you are safe. Thanks for reporting, even if the news is so sad.
Pilgrim, thank you friend. It has been a very difficult and sad week indeed for Australia. 18 are now confirmed dead and 12 still missing. But the good news is the Aussie spirit is well and truly on display. 20,000 volunteers turned up in Brisbane alone on the weekend to help clean up.
