Iron Poet Challenge / Open Call: A Cinquain

Rate: 17 Flag

It's been about six months since we last had an Iron Poet Challenge.

I know that my good friend and usual partner in crime, J D Smith, has been extremely busy so I am going to issue this challenge to anyone who is up for it!

The challenge is a relatively simple one I think.... a Cinquain please!

Just five lines is all!

Here are two basic methods for a Cinquain.

The first method is based on syllables:

Line 1:   2 syllables
Line 2:   4 syllables
Line 3:   6 syllables
Line 4:   8 syllables
Line 5:   2 syllables

The second method, instead of syllables, is simply based on words, and has the following pattern:

Line 1:   1 word
Line 2:   2 words
Line 3:   3 words
Line 4:   4 words
Line 5:   1 word

If you want to be really challenged you can add both methods together.  That is, the first line is 1 word - 2 two syllables; then 2 words - 4 syllables; then 3 words - 6 syllables; 4 words - 8 syllables; 1 word - 2 syllables.

Sticking with concrete objects rather than abstract ideas can be useful eg "My Dog" rather than "Happiness" can return good results.

Organising the ideas in your Cinquain to follow the order below is another suggestion:

Title
Description of the title
Some action about the title
Feeling about the title
Synonym for the title

I've written a number of Cinquains using the syllable method.  Here are some of mine:

Loneliness

Only
Cool winds embrace
The solitary soul
Wading through a rippled ocean
Alone

Friendship

Friendship
Blossoms with care
As a soft yellow rose
Tended with an innocent love
Brings joy

Isolation

Alone
With thoughts unkind
Despair invades her mind
Echoing cold isolation
Forlorn

A Winter's Morn

The mist
Like clouds of wool
Blankets the town below
And hides her from my eyes till noon
Then leaves

Autumnal Fall

The leaves
Twist gold and red
And drift like butterflies
To earth, settling on crisp, cooled ground
A shawl

Please give it a go!  I'm sure you'll enjoy it and will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I look forward to reading and if you could please include "Cinquain" in your tag line it will be easier for me to find them.

Thank you and good luck!

Well...I just now read this but I'd like to play after I go grocery shopping.

Sounds like fun! :)
Blinddream: Oh, I'd love for you to play along! Thank you! I'll look out for you on the morrow!
I'm in.

Thanks for doing this, LK!
Btw: Your examples are really good!
I just finished mine and am trying to post, hope to have it up soon.
rated with love and challenge
Charlie: Thank you so much. Just read yours .... wonderful!

RomanticPoetess: I just read yours too and it's beautiful! Thank you for playing!
I made one here.

I enjoy the challenge, thanks, Kate! Of your cinquains, I liked the leaf turned shawl one best.
I love all of yours, Kate! They are so well-crafted like diamonds set on a beautiful surface. I don't know if I can, but I thought of one which doesn't even follow the rules. Here it is. ♥Rated for yours.

jarring
and unexpected
it breaks the heart into
smithereens
betrayal.
Fusun: Thank you so much for your kind words and I love that you gave one a go here ... but ... I'm sincerely hoping the topic of yours is not related to something that is happening for you right now, my friend.
What fun! Will do - but now it's past my bedtime. Tomorrow... :-)
Sounds like fun! I will see what I can come up with~
R
Not my strong suit but I will enjoy reading everyones contribution! If my muse returns I may try but she has been sleeping for quite awhile now and I don't see her returning just yet.
I so appreciate your tips on how to write a cinquain, and thanks to you for the idea!
I really like your examples, "Alone" and "Friendship" speak to me especially today...you're good at this!
By chance, are you a pre-school teacher?
You distract with a better idea so well : )
Pavanne: Oh wonderful! I'll keep my eyes open for yours!

Susie: You too? YAY!!!! I'll be looking for yours too then! : )
LL2: If you were to give it a go I would be absolutely thrilled but, no pressure! I understand for sure. Have a wonderful night, lovely lady!
Just Thinking: Um ... firstly, I'm hoping you're okay. I do hope so. And ... no, I'm not a pre-school teacher although many years ago I wanted to become a school teacher. It was not meant to be.

Now, does this mean I'll see a Cinquain from you too? I'm sure hoping that too!
I can't
Come up with one
As nearly fine as yours
It's just too hard to think them up
I won't.
Matt: Oh boy am I smiling now!!!! WELL DONE YOU! : )
Oh yay! I read a few and I love these and those I've read, they're like bits of magic I can hear. I'm off to enjoy the rest, thank you!
Bleue: Thank you so much for reading ... mine and theirs!
Great cinquains and a great challenge! I wish I were a better poet - I'll be looking out for these with interest!
Alysa: Hey there! Thanks so much, Alysa.

lschmoopie: YAY! I'm heading over to read right now! : )
My my Little Kate.
I turn my back for a second, and look what you are up to...... : )
I think it is fair to say that I'm not going to let ANY IPC from you go unanswered. So watch for that.....

BUT...in poker....you call or raise.
I'm raising you!!!

A poem please,...with the following mix..
the name of a rock or mineral
the letter Q showing up three times
a star seen only in the northern hemisphere
JD: Ha! You turned your back for more than a few seconds my friend! Time enough to have all these wonderful people write Cinquains!!! : ) And if you will write one too then I am smiling even more!

And boy you are SO FUNNY!!!! Just as well I no you are a real prankster or I might think you were being serious about wanting from me a poem that includes the name of a rock or mineral, has the letter Q in it 3 times AND star seen only in the northern hemisphere!!! LOL!!!! Funny stuff!!!
And of course that should have said, "... just as well I KNOW you are a prankster ..."!!!
Are you saying you CAN'T write one with those elements?

Yep...serious here.....
OOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I send out a nice and rather wide-ranging challenge but YOU! No you have to challenge with rocks, minderals, words with Q and stars that apparently we cannot see in the southern hemisphere?? Is there such a star????

Okay, okay, OKAY .... You know I'm too competitive when it comes to these things! I'll give it a go! As long as you do too!
Of COURSE I will too.
Think of this a poetic boot camp.
By the way...Quartz and Quartzite might qualify in two of the three.
: )

You'll do magnificantly!!! You always do.
My "distract w/ a better idea" comment was a too vague reference to the dustup posts all around, and your brilliant idea of cinquains right in the middle of it all... : )
I'd rather read cinquains than write them, but I tend to ponder ideas for awhile before they bust out. I'm still thinking about the wave of posts last fall? winter? It was an an open call about "Where do you write?" There were so many intriguing posts and photos of desks, windows, rooms....
I might get around to that one soon...then cinquains next.
YAY!!!! Thanks for the hint re Quartz and Quartzite! I guess it's the least you could do to help me seeing as I know you are more learned than I am on rocks and minerals!!!!
Just Thinking: Oh I see! Well ... um .. to tell the truth ... yes, it was part of the reason for the OC ... a fairly big part. But also being a Sunday at the time people aren't often willing to put up posts that they've worked long and hard over as they fly through the feed quickly ... so I like the idea of something relatively simple and quick to do and something that is also educational and ... selfishly for me ... is poetry to boot!
Just Thinking: And, yes, those posts about "Where do you write" were wonderful! I didn't do one of those either! Perhaps I should one day too. But right now I have another challenge on my hand ... JD has fired back at me with his own challenge that has some damn tricky elements! SHEESH!
I have one post with the cinquain that I will blogt tomorrow and will raise you one JD with rock elements. You are all on!!!! Hahaha!
Susie: Oh how wonderful! Thank you! This is going to be fun! But I'm worried just a little too ... you and JD seem to be quite comfortable with rock elements! Not this little black duck! HELP!!!!!
I am so very proud to have my piece included in this list, Kate. It is the first poem that I have ever published in Open Salon. Thank you.
Brassawe: You are so very, very welcome and I am indeed honoured.

And more poetry from you would be wonderful!
kate I am sorely disappointed to see no ROUGH SEX here bwhahahahahaha

HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
Linda: Hi there lovely lady! Now rough sex? Well I think Brassawe and RomanticPoetess have that covered very, very well! ; )
