My Town (An Open Call)

Out and about in my town ... Lismore, NSW, Australia.

Richmond River High School (built 1958) - when my parents moved to Lismore from Sydney this is the school I came to and completed what was called 4th form back then (Year 10 now).

I live in a sub-tropical climate so palm trees mingle with gum trees here.

The old Public Works building

This building used to be the old Public Works building in town and it housed the Department of Agriculture upstairs where I worked in my first job.

The old Council Chambers building in the heart of Lismore.

Fountain outside City Hall building

City Hall ... looking a little tired I think!

Welcome to SCU

This is where I work!

The university sits on a hillside and is only a five minute drive from my home.  Lismore was once part of the rainforest referred to as "The Big Scrub" and a section of the rainforest still remains on the grounds of Southern Cross University.

SCU Library building

I currently work in the Library building but am in project management on the bottom floor.

Walkway to work

Would you like to join me on a walk to the office?

 Lizard

Careful! Hard to see them sometimes ... blending in with the footpath and the dead gum leaves!  During summertime our lizard friends are often found on the walkways and roads around campus soaking up the sun.

The walk into work

Bougainvilleas

Bougainvilleas ... beautiful this time of year

Coffee spot

A nice place to chat with colleagues over coffee each morning...

Good place for morning tea

Gum tree

Along this path and under those gum trees ... one of my favourite spots to steal a few quiet moments away from work when I need to.

 See you next time!

I love this peek at your world, what a great idea to share these photos. Dang your lizards are big. We have them also, alligator lizards, skinks, water newts...but they're a 10th or so the size of that baby...
The bougainvilleas are gorgeous! Lovely to see as I just get home from buying all the autumn get-ready-for-winter stuff, and not the fun stuff, the gutter cleaning stuff.
Thanks, Kate!
JT, that is a baby lizard! Seriously! Now don't get me wrong, we do have big lizards ... the goanna is HUGE! But this one ... not so big.
You live and work in such a pretty place! I have enjoyed the tour, feel like I almost know my way around.
dianaani, it was my pleasure to show you around. There's more of course but this is where my travels took me yesterday.
Thanks for sharing your world!
Will try to get some photos this week, if I can find a camera.
Hey, Julie, that would be lovely!
This is not what I expect Australia to look like.. I dont know why I expect a land that only Aussie Drover coats are fit for..
This is just beautiful and no Drover coats needed here..:)
HUGGGGGGGGG
Linda, smiling here. It's not all dust and dirt and wide open spaces down under!
That dern JD!!! Always picking on you and challenging you to Iron Poets and now this!!!!
Really...you should tell him to just leave you alone!!!

But then again....LOVE THIS POST!!!
Feels kinda worth it.

Well done!!!
Yeah, the hide of that JD! He's a hard task master! : )

But he does give me things to think about and ...well ... I kind of like that.
Kate, Your town is beautiful! I love this idea for an Open Call. Not sure how I might go about participating, unless I share photos from our time living on the road so far.
Beautiful and tropical! Thanks for sharing!
Looks so warm and sunny, nobody meets outside mornings around here too cold. Lovely view from your home too.r
I just read the comments, that was a baby!! Gardner snakes are bad enough , I do not want to meet one of those :)
heidibeth, I think posting photos of your travels is a wonderful idea. At least we can share what is home for you right now.
Susie, thank you! I know you live in a particularly beautiful place yourself.
hugs, me: It's Springtime here now and so the days are just beautiful. But being in a sub-tropical climate, wintertime isn't too bad here either. I'm not sure what to call those lizards but there are plenty of them around the university. They're fairly quiet and just run away when you startle them. They'll often hold their place on the pathway until you're almost on top of them and so they often give me a bit of a fright!
Very lovely. Thanks for taking us all around the town!!
Sheila, it was my pleasure.
What a lovely town, I wish I could take a walk on the path you laid before us.
rated with love
how lovely!
our climates are similar, I imagine, except I would never get a sprinkling of snow.
It looks so very pretty and so very clean and orderly.
vanessa, yes, I think our climates are very similar. Where I live we never get snow either. Some other parts of Australia (further south and also west of me) get snow from time to time but not here.
Lovely to see so much of your town and all the spots you love so well. Especially love Tomorrow's Pathway! Can almost hear the whispering.
anna1liese, thank you. There are many memories attached to a lot of these places. I am glad I could show them to you.
Hello, lismore! Hello, Kate! Thanks for the walk and the tour around such a pretty place.
Hello Candace!!! It was lovely to have you here!

: )
This was lovely. Gives a good window into your environment. The patio reminds me of a patio in the UCLA campus. But then, of course, your stars are upside down!
Darn our stars for being upside down! Instead of belts and swords we see saucepans! Yikes!!!

But glad I could show you a little of my place ... thankfully everything's not upside down.
Kate,
Lovely town, so green and full of plant life. The university is so pretty.
I could almost smell the roses and bouganvillea. Beautiful.
This was just wonderful and it warmed me up a little, on this very cold Ohio night. I really like the fountain in front of City Hall; it's beautiful. But what happened to The Big Scrub rainforest? I hope not what I think.
Janice, it wasn't until I looked at the photos I had taken and began to put this post together, that I realised just how much trees feature in my home town. Thank you for coming by to read.
Margaret, thank you for letting me know it warmed you just a little. What happened to the "The Big Scrub"? People. Civilisation. We cleared it to make way for the regional centre of Lismore and it's surrounding villages.
Those hills ... I just want to get in the car & hit the F3 north ...

I see the jacarandas are out up there ~ only beginning, here ~ & the bougainvillea ... o lord the display, with them & the golden silky oaks, the crimson bottlebrush ~ I can feel a summer coming on :-)

( I didn't know you worked in the SCU Library ... great spot ! )
This is the absolutely most wonderful essay on tourism. I feel like I have been there.
But I am still jealous.
Hey Kim ... it sounds like the hills just might be calling your name... yes, take the F3 then the M1 and you'll be here before you know it!

Can't beat Grafton for the jacarandas so make sure you pass through there on your way.

Ah summer .. yes it is indeed on it's way. It was very warm here today and then of course a pretty big electrical storm hit.
Dianne, I was only too happy to be able to show you around!
What a cool idea - and your town looks absolutely lovely! Thank you for sharing these pictures!
Thank you, Alysa. You've shared much of Paris and this I'm afraid pales in comparison but it is home and it is a lovely place.
Kate, thank you so much for the tour! Somehow I never pictured palm trees in Australia. Glad for a little glimpse into your part of the world.
Lovely photos, Kate. I enjoyed the tour!
Boy howdy, do those palms and skies look inviting! Brr!! Great post, Kate!
Breathtaking and beautiful. I enjoyed every step. rated
What a lovely, and clean, town. I did not see one piece of trash, or a cigarette butt or anything, anywhere. It must be the nicest, cleanest town in the world~~
Absolutely breathtaking! In the second photo, what are the beautiful purple blossoms? And those pale pink roses are the most lush I have ever seen! What a great post, Little Kate. Thank you for sharing your world with us! Rated.
A little late to the party, as usual, Katie. Loved your photos. i still have a map in my office that I printed out when I wanted to find out where Lismore was. Now I can really picture your world. Beautiful. & The bougainvilleas are gorgeous!
So very lovely! Wonderful!!! r
Romantic Poetess: How'd I miss you up there? Sorry about that lovely lady! Wouldn't it be lovely if you could come here and I could show you around?

A Simple Shutterbug: Isn't it amazing the thoughts and images we have in our heads of different places? Yes, palm trees are here too!

Angelkisses: I'm glad you came along too!

The Songbird: Thank you! Australia is a beautiful and varied place ... a little bit of all climes can be found here I think.

Fay: Aww, thank you! It was lovely to have you come along for a walk too!

scanner: You know, scanner, I've never thought of my town as particularly clean and tidy as Australia, through Local Government Councils, runs "Tidy Towns" awards and often there are smaller towns surrounding Lismore that win those awards. But now that you mention it, I think my town is quite clean and tidy too!

Michelle: Those trees with the purple flowers are Jacarandas. I believe they are native to South America but were introduced here. They grow in tropical and sub-tropical climes. Thank you for coming by, Michelle. It is always lovely to see you, friend!

trilogy: Aww, you're not terribly late, tril. And you still have that map in your office??? That makes me smile ... I remember you telling me you had printed it off and wanted to know all about where I was ... and where I was going on that cruise! Photos are good but what'd be even better is if you make it down here one day!!! : )

Marissa: G'day Marissa! It's lovely to see you!
Great town, and post! I've been bitten by the photo-bug, so to say, and am now off to snap a few pictures of my town. Stay tuned.
R
So nice, great OC I will try to put one together....
lovely Lil!
Kate, thank you for opening the windows on your world. It's a wonderful place with so many different sights to take in. A different life with lizards on your pathways, sycamore and palm trees, a sub tropical climate. . . Wold love to steal a few hours to have tea with you in your favorite quiet place.
♥R
Out on a Limb: Thank you! Please be sure to let me know if you do post a photo essay as I don't want to miss it!

jramelle: LOL!!! Professional photographer!!! That's SO funny!!! NO WAY!!! I would have thought that evident ... especially with my over-exposed photo of the Cathedral! But you do know how to make me smile and I love that!!! In all sincerity, thank you JR. I am glad I could give you this little peek into my world ... and JR, the WELCOME mat is always at my door.

Rita: Oh I hope you will put one together, Rita. I would love to visit your town and see what you see.

Fusun: And the lovely thing is that there is absolutely beautiful scenery such as beaches, mountain ranges and rainforests, all within an hour or less of my town. I would love nothing more than to have those few hours and share tea with you in that place below the gum trees but better still would be to share some days to show you around my part of the world.
Just lovely--the perfect setting for a lovely person. The bougainvilleas are magnificent but, ah!, those gum trees!
Dear Pilgrim, you are so kind to me. Thank you.

And I thought you just might like to see some pictures of our gum trees!
THe palm trees are beautiful and I like those lizards. Thank you for the tour!
r
You are very welcome, Poppi.
One of these days I'm going to set out to see Australia, and maybe New Zealand.
Howard, thank you for coming by to see me ... and my town too!

I do hope you'll make it to Australia and New Zealand one day. From what I've seen of both countries, they're pretty amazing ... and the people are pretty amazing too!
