State of Origin is the annual best-of-three series of rugby league football matches between the Maroons and the Blues, who represent the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales respectively. Described as “sport’s greatest rivalry,” the State of Origin series is one of Australia’s and the region’s premier sporting events, attracting a huge television audience and usually selling out the stadiums in which the games are played. Despite the existence of international tournaments and State of Origin being a domestic competition, it is frequently cited as being the highest-level of rugby league played anywhere in the world.Players are selected to represent the state in which they played their first senior rugby league, hence the name ‘state of origin’.

State of Origin – it’s the fiercest rivalry in Australian sport and the NSW VB Blues return home to ANZ Stadium for State of Origin II on Wednesday 13 June, fighting to salvage the 2012 series.Despite a controversial loss in Game 1, the Blues are more determined than ever to stop the Queenslanders from winning their seventh straight series and will look to make full use of their home ground advantage.As the only Sydney game of the series, the traditional interstate rivalry will be super-charged, with both the players and their passionate supporters vying for the ultimate redemption.

NSW & QLD State of Origin teams 2012

On Sunday, May 13 Ricky Stuart announced his squad for the opening game of the 2012 State of Origin series. Since the defeat to the Maroons in game one, Stuart announced two key changes, with significant conjecture as to who will be filling the key positions of fullback, five-eighth and hooker, with several candidates putting up their hand for the available spots. New South Wales played well but couldn’t manage a win. The team looking to save the series by winning Game 2 in Sydney at ANZ Stadium will line up is as follows: Brett Stewart, Jarryd Hayne, Michael Jennings, Josh Morris, Akuila Uate, Todd Carney, Mitchell Pearce, Robbie Farah, Paul Gallen, Glenn Stewart, James Tamou, Greg Bird, Tim Grant Interchange: Luke Lewis, Anthony Watmough, Ben Creagh, Trent Merrin.Paul Gallen has once again been named captain of the NSW side for the 2012 State of Origin series.

On Monday, May 14 Queensland coach Mal Meninga announced his squad for the opening game of the 2012 State of Origin series. After the win, Meninga announced an unchanged Game 2 side: Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tate, Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith, Petero Civoniceva, Nate Myles, Ashley Harrison, Matt Gillett, Dave Taylor, Ben Hannant, David Shillington, Corey Parker (18th man), Ben Barba (19th man) Cameron Smith will captain the Queensland team in the 2012 State of Origin series.
