The Butterfly And The Cocoon

Once upon a time a teenage boy was the student of a guru in India. The boy came to the guru one day to report that he had found a cocoon, and he was very excited about it. The guru advised the boy to watch the cocoon and when the butterfly started to hatch out of it to continue to study and watch but not to touch the butterfly. The boy went home and watched the cocoon for a long time. Finally, the butterfly started to crack the shell of the cocoon. The boy continued to watch for a long time and the butterfly continued to make the hole in the shell larger and larger and had more of its body outside of the cocoon. Finally the boy couldn't stand it any longer and gently, reached in, grasped the butterfly, and helped it out of the cocoon. The butterfly fluttered to the ceiling and then spiralled down to the floor and was only able to crawl. The butterfly could not fly. The boy was broken hearted. He ran back to the guru with tears in his eyes and told his story. Upon hearing what had happened, the guru said, "When you helped the butterfly out of the cocoon, you denied it the opportunity to strengthen its wings in the struggle."

The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.

Oh I like this because it reminds me of the time I saved a caterpillar from the bicycle trail in Val David , Quebec .I brought it home. It soon disappeared and I found it days latter atop a pencil in my pencil holder in a cocoon.
Weeks past and one day there was a giant Monarch butter I named Al Jr.So much larger than it's jade colored cocoon.
It dried it's wings while sitting on my shoulder. I warned it to stay away from humans and to have a safe flight to Mexico...The next year one landed on my shoulder near that place. I always wondered if it was him.

Wonderful lessons through the photos and quotations, Liz. Thank you.

A sad tale of caution to accompany beautiful photos. The colours of the first one are breathtaking.

Roll on summer with its beautiful flowers and butterflies, though I guess it's wiser not to wish time away.
A wonderful message with beautiful photos at the exact moment i needed it. Thx!
What a wonderful message; beautifully done. R
Liz, sooo eautiful. I love the quote "When you helped the butterfly out of the cocoon, you denied it the opportunity to strengthen its wings in the struggle."
Now there is a hard lesson to learn!
Heartbreaking lesson
Great photos :)

This is such a learning story. I used to use it years ago when I was teaching Parenting classes. That doing things to 'help' sometimes is not helping...not to rescue but to trust.
Algis: I love your story, how magical to have such an intimate experience with such a delightful child of nature. Thank you for sharing that!!

Marlene, that is the heart of it isn't it?!?!

Thank you all for your comments, it is a hard lesson that only brings positive consequences for those we love. To feel trusted by someone can only increase self esteem.
