International Cartoon Festival, St. Just le Martel, France
Below is a sample collection of photos from my visit to St. Just-le-Martel, France for the Salon International Du Dessins de Presse et d'Humor. A ten day affair in its 28th year, it's a wonderful event that involves the whole town. Visitors come from all over, as do the participating cartoonists. This year, there were cartoonists from Algeria, Lebanon, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Corsica, Portugal, England, Scotland, Holland, Eastern Europe and more.
The cartoonists spend their day drawing for visitors who come far and wide to view the many exhibitions of cartoons. The exhibitions include work from even more countries-- some focus on themes, some on indiviual artists. There are musical groups, panel discussions, and awards presented. I recieved the International Award this year. A section of the Salon was dedicated to the display of cartoons by the ten women cartoonists from my book, Sex and Sensibility.
Many thanks to the residents of St Just-le-Martel who fed us and housed us; and a special thanks to Gerard Vandenbrouke, the Salon founder and director (and Mayor of St Just) for creating and continuing such a fun and inspirational gathering. For me, it is wonderful to spend time celebrating art and discussing politics with artists from all over the world. We bridge language and culture in a small town in France.
