Steve Miller -He Still Speaks of the Pompatus of Love.

Rate: 9 Flag

Shag haircut, halter top, bell bottoms, platform shoes, and the Steve Miller Band- a snapshot into my high school dance. Everyone was so turned on to his spacey sound as something new and exciting. And on October 5th Steve Miller will be 67 years old. He's still out there performing to adoring fans. While he has not produced new hits that reached the level of his work in the 70s and 80s, fans seem content to hear the songs of their youth.

I found this great little interview with him on YouTube. I love learning how different artists approach their craft and hearing him tell it in his own words in his own voice beats anything I could write about him.

These songs transport me right back to 1973 and my deep fascination and cravings for music that never seemed to be satiated.  I especially love this version of Fly Like an Eagle before it was even released as a recording. It's interesting to compare it to the later recorded version. And I dig the psychedelic finish on his guitar.

SPACE COWBOY- I love the bluesy intro to this song.
THE JOKER- The album of the same name was written in a mere 19 days and soared to #1.
ABRACADABRA hit #1 in 1982.
WILD MOUNTAIN HONEY & WINTER TIME- I love this recent look at Steve Miller in concert. His voice hasn't changed at all over the years and his band is flawless. A wonderful look at the late, great Norton Buffalo who performed with Miller for 33 years. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform this live.
In June 2010 Steve Miller released his first album in 17 years. Bingo! is an album of blues covers. It hit #1 blues album on Billboard charts June 23rd, and #11 rock album on that same date. Not too shabby for being absent over a decade.  I enjoyed hearing Steve share his Chicago blues experiences that he had with some of the greats of that time: Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and Buddy Guy. Another album, recorded at the same time as Bingo! will be released in 2011.
Happy birthday Steve Miller, aka Maurice, the Space Cowboy, the Gangster of Love, the Midnight Toker...

I am going off to fly like an eagle
Rated with hugs
Steve Miller! I love his songs. Now, I am going to have Fly Like An Eagle in my head all day, not that's a bad thing.
Best Wishes,
Blittie
No matter what we look like on the outside, we are all still 17 inside.
"Jungle Love". "Jet Airliner". 'nuff said.
Yes! I grew up with Steve Miller too! I really loved his early album, Sailor - it was darker, bluesier and not quite as pop as his later albums (probably Boz Scaggs influence) My favorites - Gangster of Love, Song for our Ancestors, Dime a Dance Romance and Quicksilver Girl
I cannot see why they make some crap like Mad Men an EP/Cover and don 't recognize how much work goes in putting musical posts together. This is excellent and should be an EP at least. I first got turned on to Miller in the early 70's and still love his sound. Great Job!
man, am i glad i found this 'cuz you stopped by my blog last night. i *love* steve miller. i made it through the fantastic youtube interview with the guy and i'll be back to listen to the rest. such an incredible compilation, this post. really, really good.
Linda: He's not quite in his 70's--67. Go fly! ;)
Blittie: Glad to implant a good earworm today!

Tom: Ain't it the truth!

Andy: Rock on, brother.

Ardee:You picked some great songs!

Scanner: (hug!) Thank you! These tribute posts do take time, but I have a ball doing them. And really, I'm grateful if just one person stops in to read them.

femme: I loved that interview too. I loved all these videos, but I think the Fly Like An Eagle performance of the song before it was even recorded is pretty damn special. And Norton Buffalo on Wild Mt. Honey too.
I'm with Ardee on this one, his early stuff especially "Children of the Future" were seminal great works, and then radio found him later.
My question has always been this: Just what IS a pompatus of love?

Also, I was rearranging the walk-in closet that holds all my vinyl the other week and my partner saw the album cover for "The Joker" and wondered what the hell it was, lol.
VA: One of the great questions. Did you know that there was movie in 1995 released called The Pompatus of Love? Four guys sit around drinking beer and talking, trying to figure out the meaning of "the pompatus of love" lyric from Steve Miller and analyzing their relationships with women.
I came back for that amazing video at the end. Fantastic!
RIP Norton Buffalo~~
Scanner: I keep coming back for that one myself. The musical chemistry between Norton & Steve was magical....
